Andrs Bello

Andrs de Jess Mara y Jos Bello Lpez, naci en Caracas, el 29 de noviembre

de 1781, hijo primognito de Bartolom Bello y Ana Antonia Lpez, fue poeta,
educador, filsofo, jurista y uno de los ms importantes humanistas de Amrica.
Andrs Bello fue maestro del Libertador Simn Bolvar y particip activamente en
el proceso revolucionario que llevara a la independencia de Venezuela.
Podemos decir que la vida de Andrs Bello se divide en tres etapas:
1) Desde su nacimiento en el ao 1781 hasta 1810 vive en Venezuela, se gradu
de Bachiller en Artes el 14 de junio de 1800 en la Real y Pontificia Universidad de
Caracas, realiza estudios inconclusos de derecho y medicina, aprende por su
propia cuenta el ingls y francs, y da clases particulares al joven Simn Bolvar.
Entre el ao de 1802 y 1810, Andrs Bello se convierte en Caracas en una de las
personas intelectualmente ms influyentes. El 19 de abril de 1810, comienza el
inicio de la independencia de Venezuela. Andrs Bello participa en los sucesos, y
la Junta lo nombra Oficial Primero de la Secretara de Relaciones Exteriores.
2) El 10 de junio de 1810 inicia su segunda etapa hasta el ao de 1829, viaja a
Londres, Inglaterra, en la corbeta Wellington, en una misin diplomtica como
representante de la naciente Repblica de Venezuela. Se casa en mayo de 1814,
con la inglesa Mary Ann Boyland quien fallece el 9 de mayo de 1821, tuvieron 3
hijos.
Para el 24 de febrero de 1824, se casa con Isabel Antonia Dunn, y tienen 10 hijos.
En el ao de 1825, se encarga de la Secretara de la Legacin de la Gran
Colombia, para el ao de 1828 es nombrado Cnsul General en Pars y en el ao
de 1829 se traslada a Santiago de Chile.
Durante esta poca Andrs Bello realiza gran parte de su trabajo como escritor y
poeta, dirigiendo y redactando; El Censor Americano (1820), La Biblioteca
Americana (1823) y El Repertorio Americano (1826).
3) En 1829 viaja a Chile, donde es contratado por el gobierno chileno, desarrollo
grandes obras en el campo del derecho y las humanidades. Se le concede la
nacionalidad por gracia en el ao de 1832 por el Congreso Nacional de Chile. En
Santiago de Chile, desempea cargos como senador y profesor, dirige varios
peridicos, tambin se desempe como legislador impulsando el Cdigo Civil, el
19 de noviembre de 1842 se crea la Universidad de Chile, convirtindose en su
primer rector.

Es nombrado miembro honorario de la Real Academia Espaola en el ao de

1851. Andrs Bello fallece en la ciudad de Santiago de Chile, el da 15 de octubre
de 1865 y es enterrado en el Cementerio General de la mencionada ciudad.

1781, the eldest son of Bartholomew Bello and Ana Antonia Lopez, was a poet,
educator, philosopher, jurist and one of the most important humanists of America.
Andrs Bello was the teacher of Simn Bolvar and actively participated in the
revolutionary process leading to the independence of Venezuela. We can say that
the life of Andrs Bello is divided into three stages:
1) Since its birth in 1781-1810 lives in Venezuela, he graduated Bachelor of Arts on

1824, he married Isabel Antonia Dunn, and have 10 children. In the year 1825, is
in charge of the Secretary of the Legation of the Gran Colombia, by the year 1828
he was appointed Consul General in Paris and in 1829 moved to Santiago de
Chile. During this time Andrs Bello does much of his work as a writer and poet,
directing and writing; The American Censor (1820), The American Library (1823)
and The American Repertory (1826).
3) In 1829 travels to Chile, where he was hired by the Chilean government, major
development works in the field of law and humanities. You are granted nationality
by grace in 1832 by the National Congress of Chile. In Santiago de Chile, holds
positions as a senator and professor, directs several newspapers, also served as a

He is an honorary member of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1851. Andrs Bello
died in the city of Santiago de Chile, on 15 October 1865 and is buried in the
