Andrs de Jess Mara and Jos Bello Lpez, born in Caracas on November 29,
1781, the eldest son of Bartholomew Bello and Ana Antonia Lopez, was a poet,
educator, philosopher, jurist and one of the most important humanists of America.
Andrs Bello was the teacher of Simn Bolvar and actively participated in the
revolutionary process leading to the independence of Venezuela. We can say that
the life of Andrs Bello is divided into three stages:
1) Since its birth in 1781-1810 lives in Venezuela, he graduated Bachelor of Arts on
June 14, 1800 at the Royal and Pontifical University of Caracas, takes unfinished
studies of law and medicine, learn on their own the English and French, and gives
private lessons to young Simon Bolivar. Between 1802 and 1810, Andrs Bello in
Caracas became one of the most intellectually influential people. On April 19,
1810, begins the start of the independence of Venezuela. Andrs Bello participates
in the events, and the Board is appointed First Officer of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
2) On June 10, 1810 begins its second phase until 1829, he traveled to London,
England in the Wellington corvette, on a diplomatic mission representing the
nascent Republic of Venezuela. He married in May 1814, with the English Mary
Ann Boyland who died on May 9, 1821, they had 3 children. For the February 24,
1824, he married Isabel Antonia Dunn, and have 10 children. In the year 1825, is
in charge of the Secretary of the Legation of the Gran Colombia, by the year 1828
he was appointed Consul General in Paris and in 1829 moved to Santiago de
Chile. During this time Andrs Bello does much of his work as a writer and poet,
directing and writing; The American Censor (1820), The American Library (1823)
and The American Repertory (1826).
3) In 1829 travels to Chile, where he was hired by the Chilean government, major
development works in the field of law and humanities. You are granted nationality
by grace in 1832 by the National Congress of Chile. In Santiago de Chile, holds
positions as a senator and professor, directs several newspapers, also served as a
legislator driving the Civil Code, the November 19, 1842 the University of Chile,
becoming
its
first
rector
is
created.
He is an honorary member of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1851. Andrs Bello
died in the city of Santiago de Chile, on 15 October 1865 and is buried in the
General Cemetery of that city.
