MUMBAI:FreshfromthesuccessoftwostrikesbypilotsofJetAirwaysandAirIndia,thecountry's50,000
airlineemployeesplanstoformanationwidetradeunionthatwillrepresentpilots,engineers,maintenance
staff,cabincrewandgroundhandlingstaff.
Theproposal,putforwardbythetradeunionsofAirIndiaandJetAirways,isexpectedtoelicitgood
responsefromtheairlinestaffwhofacejoblossesandsalarycuts,withthedomesticairlineindustry
troubledbylosseslookingtocutemployeecosts.Frequentcutsinfaresduetocutthroatcompetitionand
highfuelpriceshaveseentheindustry'saccumulatedlossesmountingtoaroundRs10,000croreattheend
ofthelastfinancialyear.

CaptainGirishKaushik,presidentofNationalAviatorsGuild(NAG)thatrepresentsmorethan650pilotsof
JetAirways,thecountry'slargestairlinebypassengernumbers."Theunionwillhaverepresentationof
engineers,cabincrewandothersegmentofairlinesemployeesinthelongrun,"headded.
Themoodisdefinitelyupbeatafterthestrikesthatdemonstratedthedamagepotentialofindustrialaction.
JetAirwayslostatleastRs400croreduetothefivedaystrikeinthefirstweekofSeptember,whileAir
IndialostRs100crorefromthefourdaystrikelaterinthemonth.
Thecountry'sairlinesemployabout2,500pilots.AlmostallpilotswithAirIndiaandmorethanhalfofthose
withotherairlinesareexpectedjointheproposednationalunion.
"Oneindustry,oneunion,that'swhatweaimfor.Asingleunionatthenationallevelwillprotecttherightsof
eachandeveryemployee,"saidGeorgeAbraham,generalsecretaryofAviationIndustryEmployeesGuild
(AIEG),aunionofAirIndiaemployees.
The25,000employeesofgovernmentownedNationalAviationCompanyofIndiaLtd(Nacil),whichrunsAir
India,isrepresentedbythreeunions,AIEG,IndianCommercialPilotsAssociation(ICPA)andtheIndian
PilotsGuild(IPG).WhileemployeesofJetAirwaysandAirIndiahaveformedtradeunions,carrierssuchas
KingfisherAirlines,SpiceJet,ParamountAirways,IndiGoandGoAirdonothaveanyunionatanylevel,
althoughsomeofthemhavewelfareassociations.
Analyststrackingtheindustrysaidtheemployeeactivismisfalloutofthedownturninairlinebusiness,
whichcouldseesomeairlinesresortingtojobcuts.Thiscouldfurtherdamagetheprospectsoftheindustry.
TheformationofanationalunionbyairlineemployeesisexpectedaftertherecentstrikesinJetAirwaysand
AirIndia,saidKapilKaul,CEOofCentreforAsiaPacificAviation,Indiansubcontinent&MiddleEast.
"Itwillnothavemuchimpactinshortterm.Butinthelongrun,itwillhavesubstantialimpact,"hesaid."It
alldependsonhowairlineshandletheemployeeissuesandhowtheymaintainindustrialrelationshipafter
thenationalunionformation,"headded.
