achieving Band 7 in IELTS

What is IELTS?
A quick summary
The International English Language
Testing System, or IELTS, is an
international standardised
test of English language proficiency
for n on-native English language
speakers. It is jointly managed b y
Cambridge English Language
Assessment, the British
Council and IDP Education Pvt Ltd, and
was established in 1989. IELTS is the
worlds most popular high stakes
English-language test for study, work
and migration.

About the test

Candidates are tested in listening,
reading, writing and speaking. All
tests are scored on a banded system from 1 (the lowest) through to 9 (the
highest possible band score).
IELTS offers a choice of two versions, to serve both academic and non-
academic purposes.

IELTS Academic measures English language proficiency needed for an
academic, higher learning environment. The tasks and texts are accessible
to all test takers, irrespective of their subject focus.
IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a
practical, everyday context. The tasks and texts reflect both workplace
and social situations. The General Training version is suitable for
immigration purposes to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United
Kingdom.

Why IELTS is globally accepted.

IELTS test results are trusted by
around 9,000 education
institutions, governments,
professional registration bodies
and employers around the globe to
provide accurate and reliable
measurement of English language
proficiency.
IELTS is recognised as a secure,
valid and reliable indicator of true
to life ability to communicate in
English for education, immigration
and professional accreditation.
The IELTS test partners announce
that biometric systems to verify
the identity of test takers have
been implemented globally.
Long recognised as a secure, high-
stakes test, the IELTS security

protocols now incorporate finger

scans in jurisdictions where this is
permitted, along with high
resolution photography. The high-
resolution photograph captured
for each test taker appears on their
Test Report Form (TRF).
Developed by the IELTS partners in
consultation with security experts,
these biometric measures are
specifically designed to fit the
purpose of high-stakes language
testing. Governments accepting
IELTS test results have welcomed
the measures and positive
feedback has also been received
from test takers themselves, who
appreciate the time that is saved
by the use of finger scanning
technology to enter test rooms on

test day.
IELTS is protected by sophisticated
and multi-layered security
measures to prevent cheating in
order to protect test takers and
the organisations that accept their
results.
Thousands of educational
institutions, employers, and
professional registration bodies
accept IELTS because it is a high
quality and fair test that
accurately assesses a candidates
level of English.

Train hard. Overcome your fears.

What is scary about the

IELTS?
Exams are scary and IELTS is one of them. Test takers,
especially those who are sitting the test the first time
have their doubts, which turn into fear before the
test. People are afraid of the unknown, and the
solution is to get familiar with all the scary aspects
of the IELTS exam. There are many parts of IELTS that
can be intimidating unless you know how to handle
them. Take the element of surprise out of IELTS and
these fears will fade away.

Fear #1: What if I miss the answers in the Listening

module?
The fear of losing focus is a common one. It is natural
for a test taker to feel that he may not be able to
follow the recording.
For non-native speakers, it is always useful to listen to
as much English spoken by native speakers as
possible. This is available from media sources like
YouTube. Audio books are also a great way to listen to
quality content. Prior to the test, practising mock tests
is invaluable. Practising exposes ones weak areas so
he can concentrate where points may be lost. In the
Listening test, test takers must recover even though
they might have missed a question or two, and move
on to get the rest of the questions done.

Fear #2: What if I dont have

enough time?
While time may not be an issue in
the Listening and Speaking
modules, the Writing and Reading
modules do need test takers to be
on time.
Taking control of the time and
managing it carefully is one way of
dealing with this fear. The
candidates are given several
passages/tasks to complete.
Allocating the right amount of time
to the right task will help in staying
on top of the time.
One of the time management
techniques is called Divide and
Conquer. Divide the time in the
very beginning of the test and
write down when you will start
working on each passage. Stick to
that contract no matter what. Even
if you have questions unanswered,
move on to the next passage.
Consider this a damage control
system it will make sure that
even if some questions were
missed, most of the questions will
be answered.

Fear #3: What if Im short of ideas
to write about on a given topic?
Not many people are used to
writing essays in their routine lives.
It is a common concern to get a
topic for the essay and having
nothing to say about it.

This fear can be overcome by

reading a lot of essays on different
topics and by understanding other
peoples ideas and viewpoints on
different subjects. Be mindful that
IELTS examiners dont care about
the source of the information; it is
the way an essay is written that
matters.

Fear #4: What if I say the wrong
thing?
The speaking test is not a test of
ones ideas. It is there to assess a
candidates verbal English. As long
as you are speaking on the given
topic and expressing your thoughts
in a logical way, your ideas and
your opinions cannot harm your
score.

Fear #5: What if I have nothing to
say?
Fear of being put on the spot is
also a common one. Interacting
with the examiner and answering
questions with little or no time to
think can be daunting. Some
students also get nervous about
being recorded.

Fear #6: How to write good English

in such a short time while thinking
of ideas?
Essay writing can be treated like a
science, and many formulae can be
memorized, in order to look and
sound proficient in English. Keep
some advanced level generic
sentences in your mind, which can
be modified according to any given
topic, to make some very cool
complex sentences.

The tips discussed here combined

with regular practice shall go a
long way in achieving success.
However, investing in a coaching
program and learning from a
specialist of IELTS is known to help
in doing serious preparation for
the test.

Our best friend, practice, is again

here to help. Practising speaking
with a list of topics can do miracles
for your confidence; after youve
proven the ability to speak to
yourself, it becomes much easier
to demonstrate it to the examiner.

The Formula of achieving Band 7 in IELTS General in 21 days.

The secret formula

Constant effort and

frequent mistakes are
the stepping stones to
genius.
- Elbert Hubbard

Okay, if youve been waiting to know

about the secret pill to success at the
IELTS, I have good news. You can
achieve Band 7 in General IELTS in
just 35 days of preparation
dedicating under 4 hours each day.
While this a simple advice, it is not
easy. The journey is on a steep road
under harsh conditions. Do not
sweat. There is help around the
corner. You need to ask though.

1. Evaluate yourself. Stop assuming
your current level of English and do a
test or two and know your current
level accurately. The tests will also
give you an insight into what your
weak areas are, so you can focus on
them more.

2. Set a goal. When we set a target, it
may sound funny, but it becomes
very hard to not achieve them.
Remember why you want the right
IELTS score. Keep in mind the
consequences of failing. At the same
time, do not let the fear of failure
rule over you.
Write your goal where you see it
everyday. When setting a goal, be as
specific as possible. For instance, you
might want to set a goal of 7.5 bands
in the Speaking and Writing modules
and 8 in Reading and Listening.

From a spirituality point of view,

the Law of Attraction starts to
work in our favour when we know
what we want. Keeping your eyes
on the goal helps you take the
right decisions.

3. Make a strategy. Working hard
in all directions can improve your
English, but a systematic approach
towards achieving a goal gives a lot
better results. Continuous progress
in the right direction is
incomparable to any tactic.
The age-old strategy of Divide-
and-Conquer is one of the most
important strategies for
overcoming those giant challenges.
Make a plan to become skillful at
the IELTS bit by bit. At the same
time, it is important that you
consistently improve on your
basics of grammar, vocabulary and
sentence formation along with
preparing for specific modules of
IELTS.
A calendar marked with three
hours of practice everyday, neatly
specifying what you are working on
in those hours, is going to help you
stay focused and adhere to a
schedule.

4. Make a habit of learning.
Growth is a continuous process,
and how much we grow is often the
result of our habits. It is observed
that the hardest thing to do for
adults is to change their habits or to
adopt new habits. The few who can
work on their habits are the ones
who become successful.
It takes twenty-one days to form a
habit. Falling into the habit of
learning will make the journey
more enjoyable and increase ones
learning capabilities.

some of the best practices include

reading as much as one can. This
time the reading is to observe and
learn the usage of English and pick
up a word or an expression, rather
than be immersed in the context.
Always keeping in your possession
a notebook where you add any new
words and phrases you learn, will
go a long way in increasing your
level of English.

6. Take help. Every challenge can

be compared to winning a gold
