1,872 earthquakes.
2 exceeded a magnitude 6.0.
Continued unusual movement, global unrest, and more.
Kick back folks, and relax. This is your week end report!
Hey folks! I hope you have had an awesome week! I want to
thank you for tuning in for the earthquake report! For the record,
today is September the 11th, 2016. This video will speak of
earthquake data spanning from September the 3rd through
September the 9th.
It was on this day in 1992, when a magnitude 6.4 struck central
Africa. The earthquake was centered about 155 miles south,
southeast of Kibombo. At least eight people were killed, 37 were
injured and several buildings were destroyed. The earthquake
was also felt over 526 miles away in Burundi.
This is whats happening:
Oklahoma Experienced Its Largest Earthquake on Record.
The earthquake that shook Pawnee, Oklahoma, on September
the 3rd is now the state's largest on record, according to the U.S.
Geological Survey, which upgraded the magnitude to a 5.8.
The earthquake was previously pegged at a magnitude 5.6. But
further analysis of the seismic recordings from the event found the
quake size to have a bigger moment magnitude, according to the
USGS. Moment magnitude for those interested, is based on the
total energy released by the event, and is considered a more
accurate measure of magnitude than that of the now rarely used
Richter scale.
The quake hit the north end of the Tobacco Root Mountains at
around 5:44 p.m. Saturday and maintained its intensity along
portions of state Highway 41 and in the Whitehall area. According
to the USGS, the quake could have been felt as far away as Butte
and Deer Lodge to the west and Bozeman to the east.
The remaining earthquakes struck, for the most part, locations
here in the States.
Well start with Hawaii, which registered 77 earthquakes, with the
strongest being the previously mentioned 4.0 on September the
6th. Swarm activity was centered around the Pahala, which
clocked in 24 earthquakes and Honaunau, Napoopoo, which
registered 30.
Alaska clocked in 374 earthquakes. The strongest to strike was a
magnitude 4.8 that hit Atka on Wednesday, September the 7th.
Washington registered 43. The most intense being a noteworthy
3.1 that hit Sudden Valley. The average magnitude for all
earthquakes to strike Washington was a .89. As for the Sudden
Valley earthquake, the USGS had received nearly 140 responses
via its citizen science reporting program. And as you know, an
earthquake with a magnitude of 3 to a 3.9 is considered minor
and such quakes are often felt, but rarely cause damage.
Oregons earthquake activity, once again, remained largely
unchanged when compared to the previous weeks data. We
experienced 14 quakes in total. The strongest registered was a
2.9 that struck Port Orford.
California experienced a 5% increase in earthquake activity when
compare to the previous week. This equates to roughly 714
earthquakes being registered over the past seven days and on a
daily basis, roughly 102 being experienced.
