number of rabid dogs in
most towns and cities and
the human rabies vaccine
is in short supply so stray
dogs need to be controlled. ZNSPCA is now
taking an active role together with relevant City
Councils, in the updating
and enforcing of Municipal By-Laws. This will
promote responsible pet
ownership and reduce the
volume of stray dogs.
ZNSPCA has requested
that all dogs must be
microchipped and vaccinated for rabies. In
order to assist the City
Councils, ZNSPCA wants
all SPCAs to play an
active role in the vaccinating and microchipping of all dogs in
their area. Currently
ZNSPCA are sourcing cost
effective microchips as well
as organizing funds for
rabies vaccination campaigns.

ZNSPCA is so proud to announce that the Honourable

Minister of Education has approved the inclusion of Animal
Welfare Education into the
National Curriculum from
Grade 3 (7 years old) to Grade
7 (12 years old).
ZNSPCA has been working on
this inclusion for many years.
The education topics will cover
companion animals, farm animals and wild animals. Every

child in Zimbabwe will be

aware of the five freedoms
and be equipped with the
knowledge he/she needs
to care for all animals.
As all curriculums have
been completed for this
year, the Ministry has requested ZNSPCA put together a presentation of all
topics for inclusion into
the new curriculums. As
stated in The Link, by sen-

sitizing our children with

animal welfare issues, we
are creating a non violent
society for future generations.

COURT CASES
Security Companies need to
be checked continuously by
our Inspectors.
Recently we have had two
court cases involving Security
Companies.

BLACK HAWK SECURITY

Peace Security pleaded guilty

to one count of animal cruelty. ZNSPCA removed their
German Shepherd dog with a
broken leg that was being
made to work. They were
fined US$200.
Fifteen dogs were confiscated
from Black Hawk Security
Company. One dog had been
left in a kennel to die and
although she received veteri-

nary attention she died two

days later.
The dogs were on a farm just
outside Marondera. Whilst
the ZNSPCA were trying to
remove the animals Black
Hawk Security surrounded the team
and blocked the
road with farm
equipment.
ZNSPCA called on
the Zimbabwe Republic Police who
arrived on the scene quickly.
The accused plead
not guilty to the
animal cruelty

charges but after a lengthy

trial, the Magistrate found the
Company guilty and fined
them US$300. ZNSPCA is
now in civil court recovering
the debt incurred from this
case.

For the last few years,
Kadoma SPCA was illegally
taken over by an exemployee. It took ZNSPCA a
few months through the
Courts to get this individual
evicted, but we are pleased
to announce Kadoma SPCA is
once again open.
We have received donations
of food and blankets so the
animals at the facility are
comfortable.
We have also received a donation of wire fencing that
we are using to repair the

kennels and cattery.

Many years ago, Germisten
SPCA donated this vehicle
pictured here to ZNSPCA. It
is now at Kadoma SPCA and
still going strong! Thank you
Germisten SPCA!

Kadoma SPCA now has a kennel hand and ZNSPCA staff

rotate duties for management and Inspectorate purposes. We are currently setting up a Committee and are
trying to source monthly
funding for an Inspector to
be trained and run the SPCA.

ZNSPCA look forward to

Kadoma SPCA being fully
functional in the near future.
We take this opportunity to
thank Mrs. Sally Nehuis for
her assistance and
dedication to Kadoma SPCA.
