Trends in the Catalan

Introduction

In the Catalan Opening White's underlying theme is to exert pres

sure on Black's centre and queenside by the fianchetto of hi!
king's bishop. According to how Black reacts to this the openinl!
can develop in markedly different fashion.

Part One of this book deals with Black's most popular choice,
the Open Variation, involving the capture ... dS x c4 at an earl)
stage. Several of the most critical lines in the Catalan at present
are the various gambit ideas contained in Chapters Three and

Four.
Part Two covers the Closed V arlation, where Black builds a so

lid centre. A principle area of theoretical importance here is when

Black limits White's options by playing an early ... .Q.b4.
