By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Kids are back in school and the air is starting to cool.
With fall just around the corner, long-time Mt. Laurel residents know the townships annual fall festival cant be far off.
The 2016 Mt. Laurel Township Fall Festival & 5K Run/Walk
are set to return on Sept. 17. As in years past, the festival will be
held at Laurel Acres Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the running and walking events taking place earlier in the day starting
at 8:30 a.m.
According to acting township manager Meredith Tomczyk,
this years event is set to bring back all the fun and entertainment of past years with even more vendors.
Tomczyk said the township received a great deal of interest
from vendors, and even by expanding the event, all slots filled
up well before the week of the festival.
We have some really great new food vendors coming out
this year and some returning ones that everyone loves, Tomczyk said.
Tomczyk said many of the favorite rides of previous festiplease see CHILDREN, page 13

Teach, Inform, Mentor, Educate matches

trained community volunteers with students
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
For years, the Teach, Inform,
Mentor, Educate mentoring program has been helping to foster
positive relationships between
public school students and mentors. Running in all but one of the
Mt. Laurel schools, this schoolbased program matches mentors
with students who meet once a
week in the school during the
lunch hour from October through
June.
Founded and still run by Pastor
Terrell Person and his wife Toylene, who also run Jacob's Chapel
and the Colemantown Foundation, last year there were 60 participating students and 55 partici-

pating mentors. This year, the organization hopes to attract 75 to

100 mentors.
As I was going back to school
to get my bachelors degree, I had
this vision I called SOS, meaning Save Our Society, and I
wished to do so one family at a
time, Person said. Today, weve
been doing this for 20 years and
officially through the Mt. Laurel
Board of Education for 15 years.
This program has three main
objectives: to provide positive role
models for youth, to enhance the
self-esteem of students and to encourage the academic success of
students in at-risk situations. Ultimately, by fulfilling these objec-

in our opinion

We will never forget

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Fifteen years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

Richard Donnelly

ifteen years have passed since

the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washington, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 15
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 15
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost. Its hard to believe how
much our lives have changed in those
15 years how heightened security at
public places, especially airports, is
expected and openly accepted; how a
persons privacy is not always private;
how farewell and welcome home celebrations for servicemen and women
seem to be commonplace; and how,
sadly, the world is still dealing with
terror.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 15 years
ago. Here we are, a decade-and-a-half

later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of

us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Fifteen years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local communities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us,
host 9/11 remembrances and memorials.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have

done well so far.

We should never forget what happened 15 years ago. We should always
pause and respect those who were
taken from us and those who fight for
our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 15 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
Teaching about 9/11 isnt a requirement in New Jersey public schools, although teaching about terrorism is,
so, by default, our children are learning about the worst attack on U.S. soil
in history. And thats important, because a majority of these students
werent alive when the attacks happened, and the ones who were probably dont remember. So teaching them
about the events of the not-so-distant
past is important, so that no one will
ever forget.

good work that the Persons and
all of the volunteer mentors are
doing in our schools, Wendy
Keller, a volunteer mentor with
the program, said.
Providing adolescents with
strong, positive role models is a
key part of the program, and for
that reason, the mentors role is
critical and the selection of men-

tors is carefully evaluated. Active

mentors within this program
must be caring, understanding
and responsive, while acting as a
friend who listens, supports and
can offer advice.
Mentors don't focus on one
particular academic area. What
they really do is show up, be a
consistent friend and listen,
Keller said. Mentors and
mentees play games, do crafts,
help with homework/school
work, read together, go out on the
playground and more.
The roles of the mentors also
extend to providing a model of
correct behavior that students
can seek to emulate, developing
positive beliefs in the benefits of
education and by clarifying values that lead to positive attitudes.
Additionally, mentors help students develop problem-solving
skills, short- and long-term goals
and can provide consistency in
chaotic situations.
I honestly didn't know what to

expect, but over the last six years,

I have enjoyed it immensely. I
have two boys of my own, and female mentors are generally
matched with female mentees, so
it has been interesting for me to
work with young girls, Keller
said. You become really attached
to these kids, and their successes
are yours as well.
To become a mentor, interested
adults must complete a volunteer
application that can be found on
the programs website at:
http://www.mtlaurelschools.org/
community/T.I.M.E.-Mentor-Program/index.html. Once the application is approved, the volunteer
must attend one training session
held in the T.I.M.E. Mentor Office.
Lastly, the mentor will be
matched with a student based on
the students current readiness
to succeed, similar backgrounds,
hobbies, family composition or
other interests.
For more information on the
program, call (856) 979-9200.

Main Street Meets

the 21st Century
C
hoosing a health care professional is difficult. Dentists are
no different. My name is Dr.
Kevin Atlee, and I would love to be
your dentist. I grew up in Marlton and
now practice right on Main Street in
Moorestown. I am trained and experienced in all phases of dentistry. From
simple fillings and cleanings, to complete smile makeovers and implants.
When people come to me for help, they
want ME to help them. People dont
like to be told, Go see the endodontist
for your root canal, the oral surgeon
to have your tooth taken out, and the
periodontist to get your implant, then
give me a call when youre done. My
job is to serve your needs. Now, if we
truly need a specialist, I know when to
make that call. And this area is full of
great specialists. But I enjoy so many
aspects of dentistry, I pretty much love
to do everything.
My staff and I constantly remodel
and upgrade the practice with one goal
in mind: to increase patient care by
making your dental treatment better,
more comfortable, and faster, using
the latest, cutting-edge techniques
and technologies. Weve tried really
hard to bring out the charm of being
located in an historic part of town, and
at the same time incorporate the very

latest technology. You cant get more

state-of-the-art than what weve done.
We pretty much have everything on
a dentists wish list. It truly is Main
Street meets the 21st Century.
How does all of this benefit YOU?

14 THE MT. LAUREL SUN SEPT. 1420, 2016

Mt. Laurel defeated

Stafford Stingrays, 10-0
MT. LAUREL
Continued from page 2
Mt. Laurel, which was 15th out
of 18 in the pre-tournament rankings, opened the tournament winning four of its first five games to
make it to the semi-finals.
The girls ended up having to
play four games on that final day
with temperatures soaring higher than 105 degrees.
After losing their first game on
that final Sunday, the girls came
back and won the next three
games, all of which were thrilling
victories.
In the championship game, Mt.
Laurel came out on top, 10-0, beating a Stafford Stingray Team that
just seemed to wilt in the extreme
heat.
Cofsky said he couldnt be happier for the girls.
This amazing group of 10 girls

was the hardest-working team I

have ever been privileged to
coach. The entire experience
could not have been scripted any
better if it were in a movie, Cofsky said. Mt. Laurel softball has
long been known to be the gold
standard for recreational softball
programs in the South Jersey
area, consistently having the
most players and best coaches,
and highest talent level in the
area. Now the travel program is
catching up to our rec program.
In addition to winning the
championship, some Mt. Laurel
girls won individual awards as
well. Kayla Patel won Defensive
Player of the Tournament for her
outstanding
defensive
play
throughout the entire tournament. Casey Cofsky took home
the Offensive Player of the Tournament for consistently getting
big timely hits, including her
team-leading seventh home run
of the season.
