ASSIGNMENT NUMBER-1

SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES IN THE SHRIMP INDUSTRY

GROUP NUMBER 3
SECTION C

Q-2 )Recommend how Murray could successfully facilitate discussion at the

workshop.
A-2) Below steps must be followed by Murray:

Identifying the Participants/stakeholders

Wild Shrimp Catch Fisheries

Aqua Culture
Environmentalist
Regulatory Bodies
Organizing a discussion whereby each stakeholder can express their views and opinions.
Bring the wild shrimp and aquaculture face to face, so that they know each others views and

limitations.
The main focus would be conservation strategies that could serve collective interest.
Ask the environmentalists to put forward their points and express their concern on the shrimp

environment.
The Regulatory body should bring forward points that would be beneficial for the environment as

well as the industry.

As the shrimp production is the major source of income for the six countries, the regulatory

bodies should discuss strategies whereby the economy is not disrupted.

Present the casual loop diagram including all the variables to give an overview of the current

situation.
Murray should present his findings to all the stakeholders Environment:
Global fishing fleet was 2.5 times larger than what ocean could support, which
meant humans were taking far more fish out of the ocean than could be replaced by
those remaining.
The food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations reported that across
species 52% of the worlds fisheries were fully exploited and 24% were over
exploited, depleted or recovering from depletion.
Organic waste, harsh chemicals and antibiotics used in shrimp farming led to water
pollution and salinization, the process by which salt water from shrimp farms seeped
into ground water and agriculture land.

Shrimp Industry:

Shrimp production has been on a rise since 1980.

It provides more than $10 billion exports per year.
It is an important source of jobs, tax revenues, and foreign exchange earnings.
Regulatory Bodies :
They have taken effective measures in the past to preserve natural resources.
Ban on Shrimp farming within mangrove areas to preserve ecological balance.
Prohibit loans for farms located in mangroves.
Murray should explain the various factors by which supply has exceeded the demand.
Explain the boom and bust cycle with the supply and demand.

He should try and reduce the communication gap between the various stakeholders so that they

could understand each others position.

Murray should put forward his findings on the competitive dynamics in the shrimp industry using
the Game theory model.

Q-3) Suggest system regulations or good practices that would positively

impact on the long-term life of the shrimp industry
A-3 ) The following practices can be implemented for the long term sustainability of shrimp industry:
1. In order to keep a check on illegal, unregulated and unreported fishery , registration of all shrimp
farms should be made mandatory.
2. New and existing farms should undergo the EIA(Environmental Impact Assessments) to
recognise and rectify any negative impact on the mangrove eco system.
3. Efficient waste management practices to dispose the non organic and solid waste material should
be followed.
4. In order to minimise the loss of mangroves ,reforestation practices must be followed by both the
new shrimp farms and the old farms that have shutdown.
5. To curb the rising demands, regulatory bodies should impose taxes which would lead to increase
in price.
6. Government should not allow the banks to sanction loans to the farms being established in or
around mangrove areas.
7. Proper research must be conducted to gather data to determine the optimal level of production
and establish policies accordingly.
8. Cyanide and Dynamite fishing practices must be prohibited as they not only hurt the target
population but the marine habitat as a whole.
9. Farmers should adopt the conserve strategy to preserve and aid the wild post larvae to regenerate.
10. Stringent rules to be enforced to prevent illegal exportation of shrimp.
