I have been an adjunct instructor of Spanish at J. Sargeant Reynolds
Community College for seven years. I graduated from Wake Forest
University with a Bachelors of Arts in Art History and earned a Masters of
Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from North Carolina State
University. I also lived and studied in Sevilla, Espaa. In my free time, I
enjoy spending time with my family and playing tennis. I am looking
forward to teaching you in SPA 102 - online!
Communication Guidelines:
Contact Policy: Students who e-mail the instructor can normally expect a
response within a 2 business days. I make it my goal to respond in 24
hours during the week and on weekends; however, if you do not hear back
within 2 business days, assume I did not receive your message and re-send
it. E-mail is the best form of contact with the instructor. Students must
use the e-mail address provided to them through JSRCC and NOT
personal e-mail addresses. Students must check e-mail frequently as

well as Blackboard announcement updates. Students are encouraged to email questions throughout the semester. However, please do not send emails that look like text messages. I ask that you address me by name,
Profa. Wright, and that you include your name at the bottom of your e-mail
for any and ALL E-MAILS. I expect complete sentences in the body of your
e-mail. I will provide the same for you in my replies back to you. Thank you
for your understanding.
Students may expect their grades to be updated by every Tuesday at
11:59 p.m. Also, students may expect the new weeks assignments
to be posted to the Supersite by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. as well.
Writing and Communication Skills:
Proper etiquette in an online course, or Netiquette is a vital
component for the instructor and all of the students.
When communicating in this course, be sure to use your
best judgment. Be sensitive to others, professional, and fair.
Maintain integrity and honor.
Keep in mind that anything you record in writing on the
Internet (e-mail, etc.) can be traced forever and is an
indication of your professionalism.

COURSE SUMMARY:

SPA 102 introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills


and emphasizes basic Spanish sentence structure. Incorporates exposure
to the arts, culture, and literature of the areas of the world where Spanish
is spoken.
Prerequisite: SPA 101 or equivalent.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of Spanish 102, students will be able to do the following in
Spanish:

Talk about clothing


Negotiate and pay for items
Express preferences while shopping
Talk about daily routines and personal hygiene
Reassure someone
Tell where you went
Talk about food
Order at a restaurant
Discuss familiar people and places
Talk about celebrations and personal relationships
Express congratulations
Ask for the bill in a restaurant
Express gratitude
Discuss medical conditions

Talk about parts of the body


Talk about health and medical visits
Talk about using technology and electronics
Talk about car trouble
Use common expressions on the telephone
Say how far away things are

LEARNING RESOURCES:

*During the Fall 2016 semester, you will only need to purhcase ISBN 978-161857-062-8 which costs $125. This will provide the Supersite Plus code. If you
purchased the code for 101, you should be able to use it for three consecutive
semesters. Thus, you would be able to use it for this course and 201 in the
Spring of 2017. Our department will be changing the text series in the Fall of
2017.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
Lessons 6-11 will be studied. Notes, Power Points, handouts, etc. are posted to
Blackboard under the Lessons 6-11 tab organized by Chapter. I would also
recommend that you check the announcements on Blackboard for updates. This
course will involve reading, listening, speaking, and written exercises. Some
assignments will be posted to Blackboard; however, most will be found on the
Aventuras website Supersite (www.vhlcentral.com). Two PROCTORED tests
will be given during the semester. The final exam is also proctored and will be
cumulative (Lessons 6-11). You will need to print a ticket for each proctored
test and the final exam to take to the testing center. These tickets will be
available on Blackboard under the Proctored Tests and Exam tab by the
Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. of the week of each test/exam.

Course Schedule
Weekly Assignments are due by no later than Mondays at 11:59 p.m. You will need to check the notes,
handouts, etc. on Blackboard under the Lessons 6-11 tab in addition to reading the corresponding
textbook lesson each week. Also, you will need to check the Supersite each week for the assignments
that are due in addition to what is bolded/highlighted in the course schedule below. Do not wait until
the last minute to complete your work. I would highly recommend that you keep a daily schedule so that you
can pace yourself while taking this course. Spend 8-10 hours per week on this course.

Assignment 1 = Read the syllabus and e-mail me what you find to be the 3 most important SPECIFIC details from the

Assignment 2 = Purchase Supersite Code, 4th Edition (see information in the syllabus); Join the class on the Supersite.

This counts as a test grade and is a great way to boost your test average!
Week 17 Review for the Proctored Final Exam
(Chapters 6-11) Take the Proctored Final Exam - The testing window is December 12-17. The final deadline is Saturday,
December 17. Again, it is risky to wait until the final day in case it is crowded or something last minute comes up for you.
(Must be completed during this testing window unless prior arrangements have been made well in advance to take the exam
a couple days earlier.) There is no way to pass this course without taking the Final Exam. NO EXCEPTIONS to be able to
take this exam later the deadline unless in the case of a MEDICAL EMERGENCY AND DOCTORS NOTE PROVIDED.

SAILS
During the Fall/Spring semesters, you will be able to view your initial progress
survey via SAILS for your courses and it will be sent to your e-mail. Your
midterm progress survey will be sent to you by e-mail through SAILS as well.
JSRCC GRADING SCALE (This is the grading scale determined by the
entire JSRCC World Languages Department. This is newly revised as of
the spring of 2014 to a 10-point scale.)
A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: 59 or less
LATE WORK:
This course is 4 credits and will require 8-10 hours of work per week. In my
experience teaching this course, students that put in those hours have
much greater success in passing the course. Remember that online
classes do not physically meet, so you have to spend the time you would
usually spend in the classroom on your own studying. Please be sure to

study the additional materials provided under the Course Documents on


Blackboard for each lesson. All assignments are due on specific dates and
not by convenience. The practice portion of your final grade (30%) is comprised
of Supersite practice. These assignments are accepted late with a starting
grade of HALF credit. If you submit an assignment late and are seeking half
credit, you MUST send me an e-mail to notify me that you completed the
assignment late. Otherwise, I will not be aware to go back and check/change
your grade to half credit. No make-up proctored tests/exams will be given
unless you have a documented medical emergency. If you need to take a
test early, you will need to contact me far in advance. These items will
be at the professors discretion.
