Space Standard Initiators

In mission-critical space and defense applications, space standard
initiators provide a fast-acting, small-package energy source for
converting electrical signals to a gas pressure output or high
temperature flame and hot particles. The Pacific Scientific Energetic
Company (PSEMC) has engineered a high-quality, highly reliable
Space Standard Initiator (P/N 103377-500) to meet stringent test and
flight requirements while maintaining low cost and availability.

Product Technology
Using a two-pin, single bridgewire design, the 103377-500 Space
Standard Initiator is engineered for maximum efficiency in harsh space
environments. The initiator is electrically actuated by a minimum 3.5
amps application of all-fire current, producing a hot flame and gas
output pressure of 525 to 775 psig within 10 milliseconds in a 10cc
closed volume.

In addition, the 103377-500 Space Standard Initiator is also designed to meet or exceed the performance
requirements of the NASA Standard Initiator. Table 1 provides a summary of the performance specification
for the 103377-500.

Space Standard Initiators Family Evolution

For the past several decades, PSEMC has researched, designed and manufactured a line of fully reliable
initiator solutions for space and defense missionsincluding those in the 10337 initiators family.
The 103377-500 Space Standard Initiator is a member of the 103377 initiators family. The baseline initiator
of the family, 103377-3, was qualified in 1976 to MIL-I-23659, Revision C, General Design Specification for
Electric Initiators.
The following year, a combination of four initiators (103377-3, 103377-5, 103377-7, and 103377-9), identical
except for varying output was qualified to MIL-STD-1512, Design Requirements and Test Methods for
Electrically Initiated Electroexplosive Subsystems.
In 1990, the 103377-191 was designed to meet the envelope and functional performance requirements of
the NASA Standard Initiator (NSI) and was qualified for use on the Boeing Delta launch vehicles. The
success of the initiator family continued to grow as it was selected for a number of space and missile
programs.
Since its original design, PSEMC has manufactured over 1,000,000 103377-family initiators, and is currently
manufacturing 103377 initiators at a rate of 20,000 initiators per year.
