OBJECTIVES

At the end of the period the pupils will be able to:

Identify the parts of skeletal system.
List the functions of the skeletal system.
Acclaim the roles of skeletal system to human survival.

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

Parts of Skeletal System

The skeletal system is made up of many bones.

The diagram shows the bones in your body. Look at the diagram
carefully. Can you name these bones?
When you talk about the bones that make up the skeletal system
you are simply talking about the skeleton.

Skeletal System

Is made up of many bones that are joined together to make a

structure.

Functions of Skeletal System

It gives the body shape.

It supports the body as you move.
Some bones protect some vital parts or internal organs of your
body.

Parts of the Skeletal System

1. CRANIUM
The hard bone in the head is
the skull or cranium. It is like a
strong built- in helmet. The top of
the skull feels like one large bone
but it is really made up of eight
bones that have grown together.
When you were a baby the eight bones in your skull
were apart. As you grew older these bones grew together
to form one bony structure.
The skull protects the brain. It is hard and strong but
it can be cracked if you receive a severe blow on the head.
2. JAWBONE
The jawbone is part of your
head. It moves allow you to chew
your food and speak.
3. BACKBONE OR THE SPINAL COLUMN
A large bone that is found
at the center of your back.
One end of your backbone is
connected to your head and the
other end is connected to your
hipbones. The backbone is made

up of thirty-three small separate bones called vertebrae.

There are 24 vertebrae in our backbone.
Your backbone is your main support. The small bones
in your backbone let you move in different ways.
4. RIBCAGE

Your ribs are made up of twelve pair

of bones which are connected to the
backbone. They form a cage towards the
front of your body. The upper seven pairs
of
the ribs are sternum. The ribs protect the
heart and the lungs.
There are bones attached to the
breastbone or sternum. These bones
include the four shoulder bones: the right and left clavicles
or collarbones, and the scapulae or shoulder blades.
HUMERUS
Your arms extend from your shoulder to your
fingertips. There are three large and long bones in each
arm: the humerus, the radius and the ulna. There are 32
bones in each your arms.
HIPBONE
Two large bones attached to the
bottom of the backbone. The hipbone
together with the backbone forms the
pelvic bones. The pelvic bones hold the
weight of your body.
FEMUR
The bone that extends from your
hips to your knee is called the femur. It is
the largest and the longest bone in the
human body.
TIBIA
The larger of the two bones in your leg.
It is
located between your knee and your ankle.
FIBULA
The smaller bone in the leg.

The Joint
Your bones are joined together at joints.
A joint is where two or more bones meet. You can move
because of the way the bones are joined together at the
joints.
Some joints help the bones to move back and forth only.
Other joints help the bones to move in all directions.
There are several kinds of joints in our body. Each kind of joint let
bones move in certain way.

Kinds of Joints
1. HINGE JOINTS

Let bones move back and forth. Your knee joint and
elbow joints are examples of hinge joints.
2. PIVOT JOINT
The joint in the head is a pivot joint. It allows you to turn
your head while the other bones in your body do not move.
3. BALL ND SOCKET JOINT
Let bones move in all directions. The shoulder joints are
examples of the ball-and-socket joints.

Ligaments

Cartilage

The bones at the joints are joined together by

ligaments.
Ligaments are like rubber bands.
Ligaments can stretch as we move.
The part that is softer than the bones at the joint.
Protects the bones at the joints.
It acts as a pad or a cushion.
It protects the bones from rubbing or hitting together
as they move.
