In the last twenty-one years, there have been many experiences in my life

that have impacted my personal values and whether those values are absolute or
relative. My spirituality is one of my values that I hold closest to my heart. In life,
especially college, you meet individuals with all types of religious backgrounds and
some that dont have a religious belief at all. I believe my background has
influenced most (if not all) of my decisions and my overall attitude toward other
people or situations. An additional value I have obtained would be integrity. I think
this is one of the most important things an individual can have when it comes to a
professional or personal relationship in or out of work. Creativity is also an
important aspect in work or school. Being creative in your thinking helps to expand
the ideas and thoughts of yourself and those around you. I would say determination
and competitiveness are also values of mine. I think it is important to have a little
competition to keep you motivated and help you to reach your goals. Fairness,
kindness, patience, and sympathy are a few other values I like to maintain in school
and my workplace. Working in the hospital, I work with individuals with varying
personalities and attitudes on a daily basis. I try my best to start each shift by
placing myself in their shoes and trying to understand why some of them may act
out in a certain way. I dont know of anyone (including myself) that would LIKE to be
in a hospital. It is very important to treat everyone fairly and with compassion in my
line of work. Last, but definitely not least, a core value of mine is respect. I believe
respect of others and respect of oneself is very important in the personal and
professional world. If you lack respect, others will show a lack of respect toward you.

Timeline for Professional Goals:

DirectionsUsing the Guidelines for Writing Goals, list your professional goals you
are striving for arranged by time and by priority (put the main one first in each
category):
Short-term (less than three months):
1. I will pick up enough shifts to obtain 100 hours on a biweekly pay period by the
middle to end of October to have a bigger check and also help to staff my floor.
2. I will pass exam one for Resource Management with at least a B in order to get a
good grade at the end of the course so I can maintain a good GPA.
3. I will make it a point to study at least 30 minutes per day for each of my classes
until the semester is over. I think this will help significantly in my overall grades.
Intermediate (three months to a year):
1. By December, I will start cross training at Baptist so I can help the staff in other
areas when they are short-staffed.
2. I will study for my exams in advance this semester, next spring, and next fall in
order to insure I know the material as well as I need to.

3. I will take Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2 next spring to satisfy my prerequisites
for nursing school and OT and apply for each after the spring semester.
Long-range (more than a year to 10 years):
1. I will save up enough money by 2018 to buy a new car since mine will probably
need to be replaced by then.
2. I will pay off my student loans in their entirety by 2025 so I wont have to worry
about paying them continuously while I have a family and can use that money
elsewhere.

Goal Statement:
I will pick up enough shifts to obtain 100 hours on a biweekly pay period by
the middle to end of October to have a bigger check and also help to staff my
floor.

Ways I will benefit by achieving this goal (list):

1. I will receive a larger check than normal.
2. I will have plenty left over after I pay rent and bills.
3. I will be helping to further staff my floor and therefore lessening some
of the work load for others.
4. This will show my unit supervisor that I am willing to work hard and
help when needed.
5. I will get to strengthen the bond I already have with my coworkers.

Possible Obstacles to Goal Achievement:

1. 12.5 hour shifts get tough when you have a few back to back so lack of
sleep could definitely present an obstacle.
2. I might have a test I need to study for or an assignment(s) due and
wouldnt be able to complete them because I would be sleeping
between shifts and then heading back to the hospital.
3. There may already be enough staff and they may not need an

additional person.
4. I may already have plans for the week and may not be able to pick up
a shift.
5. We can only work a maximum of 5 days in a row so I may not be able
to space my days.

Strategies for overcoming obstacles:

1. I could make sure I have no distractions when I get off work and go
straight to sleep and sleep until its time to wake up for the next shift.
2. I can study or do my assignments ahead of time if I know I have work.
3. I can ask the shift supervisor if they could use extra staff or if I could
be pulled to another floor that is understaffed.
4. I will make sure to not schedule plans on a pay period that I want to
accumulate 100 hours.
5. I can strategically space my days so that Im only working 5 in a row.
