Theremaybeaproblemwithcoolantflowintheengine.
TestStep1.PerformaCheckoftheEngine'sCoolingSystem
A. Verifythatthecoolantisfilledtotheproperlevel.Ifthecoolantlevelistoolow,airwillgetinto
thecoolingsystem.Airinthecoolingsystemwillcauseareductionincoolantflow.
B. Checkthewaterpump.Awaterpumpwithadamagedimpellerdoesnotpumpenoughcoolant.
Removethewaterpumpandcheckfordamagetotheimpeller.
C. Checktheradiatorortheheatexchangerforarestrictiontocoolantflow.Checkinternallyfor
debris,dirt,ordepositsontheradiatorcore.Debris,dirt,ordepositswillrestricttheflowof
coolantthroughtheradiator.
D. Checkthecoolingsystemhosesandclamps.Damagedhoseswithleakscannormallybeseen.
Hosesthathavenovisualleakscansoftenduringoperation.Thesoftareasofthehosecan
becomekinkedorcrushedduringoperation.Theseareasofthehosecancausearestrictioninthe
coolantflow.Hosesbecomesoftand/orgetcracksafteraperiodoftime.Theinsideofahose
candeteriorate,andthelooseparticlesofthehosecanrestrictthecoolantflow.
E. Ifthecoolingsystemforthisapplicationisequippedwithanexpansiontank,checktheshunt
linefortheexpansiontank.Theshuntlinemustbesubmergedintheexpansiontank.A
restrictionoftheshuntlinefromtheexpansiontanktotheinletofthejacketwaterpumpwill
causeareductioninwaterpumpefficiency.Areductioninwaterpumpefficiencywillresultin
lowcoolantflow.
F. Theenginemayberunninginthelugcondition.Whentheloadthatisappliedtotheengineis
toolarge,theenginewillruninthelugcondition.Whentheengineisrunninginthelug

flowswitchisoperatingcorrectly.Ensurethatanyrepairseliminatetheproblem.
