Art Careers - Syllabus


Course Description: The Art Careers course is designed for the student artist who wishes to use
their interests and ability to be creative and find successful career paths. Students will identify
art career choices as well as understand and apply skills and aptitudes required for careers in art.
Students will build a portfolio and resume, and research art careers as well as create work that
demonstrates an awareness of that career.
Course Rationale: This course is designed to help students who wish to pursue art as a career.
We will round out your portfolio, making sure you have needed requirements for the pursuit of
art beyond high school.
Course Overview:
1. Projects will be based around the Elements and Principles of Art
2. Apply basic and advanced drawing, painting, and sculpting
techniques for shading, perspective, and style.
3. Students will be exposed to various drawing media: pencil, charcoal,
felt tip, pen and ink, etc.
4. Students will be exposed to various painting media: tempera,
acrylic, and watercolor.
5. Students will be exposed to various Three dimensional media
6. Intensive study of Drawing, Painting and Design-related vocabulary.
7. Exposure to work of various Artists, both past and present.
Homework/Notebooks:
1. Students are expected to have a Sketchbook (Blank paper, at least
9x12)
2. Every graded assignment will be posted on the grading website.
3. Very minimal homework will be assigned, mostly class work.
However, sometimes I will need students to prepare for a project by
bringing in some resources for their artwork (i.e. photographs,
magazines)
4. Sketchbooks will be collected periodically throughout the school
year and be graded as class participation.

Grading Policy/Communication:
1. I can be contacted through email; we can then set up an appointment
for after school.
2. All grades based on the following

a. 60%- Projects(Craftsmanship, Creativity, Concepts, Effort)


b. 25%- Participation and Critiques/Sketchbooks
c. 15%- Tests/Quizzes/Homework
Absences and Make-up Work:
1. It is the students responsibility to approach the teacher and obtain any
missed notes or assignment on the day they return to class.
2. Students will have the number of days they were absent, plus an
additional day to make up any work.
3. In situations of prolonged absences or extreme levels of missed work
the teacher will use discretion as to how the work will be made up.
This may require the student to come in after school.

Mastery of Elements and Principles of Art.
Strengthen direct observation and technical skills needed to master a variety of drawing
and painting mediums required for college portfolios.
8. Understand the proper usage of tools and materials.
9. Communicate ideas and develop a voice through mixed media artworks.
Although art classes are an elective and fun, it is still a part of the academic school curriculum
and is intended to be taken seriously. Students are expected to be working from bell to bell. No
iPods, cell phones, other electronic devices, or foods are allowed inside the studio. Although
creativity is always encouraged when making art projects, inappropriate or obscene subject
matter is prohibited!!!
