We use was, were to express states or situations in the past. To make


the simple past of BE we use:
I, HE, SHE, IT + WAS
WE, YOU, THEY + WERE

Examples:
Last year my sister was 22 years old, so she is 23 now.
The hotel was lovely, and the rooms were very comfortable.
The children were in the garden yesterday afternoon.

Negative Form:

We put not after was or were to make negative sentences.


SUBJECT + WAS / WERE + NOT

Examples:
You werent late yesterday.
He wasnt at home.
I wasnt in class last Monday.

Question Form:

We put was, were at the beginning of the question, before the subject.

Examples:
He was at school.
SHORT ANSWERS

Was he at school?

Yes, he was / No he wasnt.

You were at home.


Were you at home?

Yes, we were / No, we werent.

Wh-Questions:

To ask about the subject, we use:


WH-WORD + WAS + COMPLEMENT + ?
Examples:

To ask about the complement, we use:


WH-WORD + WAS / WERE + SUBJECT + ?

USE
We use the past of BE to express the following:
1. Profession, trade, occupation:

My grandfather was a famous lawyer.
2. Nationality:

My great-grandparents were both from Germany.
3. Age:

Wilma was 20 years old last year.

4. Characteristics:
Ex:
Einstein was a very intelligent man.
5. Condition:
Ex:
Clark was pretty sick a few days ago.
6. Place:

We were at the movies yesterday evening.

7. Color:
Ex:

The leaves were yellow, orange, and red in the fall.
