2nd Grade News

September 13, 2016

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

This week we completed our Reading and Math
MAP benchmarks. It was a big change for most of the kids
from last year since the program will no longer be reading to
them. MAP is a great resource for me in determining your
childs strengths as well as areas of weakness. We will discuss
their results as well as strategies for growth during October
conferences.
We are just three days away from Alexs Lemonade Stand, a
charity event founded to raise money for children suffering
from cancer. Last week we cut ribbons and parent volunteers
are working hard to assemble the pins this week. I strongly
encourage your child to participate. Your child may purchase
a ribbon for just $2. They will be passed out Friday morning.
All students who purchased a ribbon will be permitted to
dress down this Friday!
I will be placing our class Scholastic order at the end of this
week. If you wish to purchase books please submit online or
you may send in the book order with cash no later than
Friday, September 16. Our online class code for online orders
is J6PN2. In class we will work on spelling during Daily 5, but
if youd like for your child to have some extra practice before
our spelling test on Fridays please visit my SpellingCity page
for games and practice tests. The link is listed on my website.
This Saturday TMSA will host a family picnic from 11 to 1. I
hope to see you there! TMSA Staff likes to do home visits just
to get better acquainted with our families. If you would like
for our 2nd grade team to come visit we are available on
Thursdays at 6PM. Please feel free to sign-up on our Sign-Up
Genius Link. Have a wonderful evening and if you have any
questions or concerns please dont hesitate to ask.

What Were Learning

This week in reading we will continue to focus on main character and the setting of a story.
We will work on asking questions as a way to demonstrate our reading comprehension. We
are still working on identifying the subject and predicate of a complete sentence and will
begin focusing on statements vs. questions. In writing we are working on pre-writing and
drafting skills for personal narratives. In math we will be working on improving our addition
fact fluency, using logical reasoning as a way to solve word problems and will begin
working on different ways to decompose a number by place value. In social studies we will
be learning about the three branches of the government, the constitution, and what it means
to be a good citizen. In science we will begin our first STEM project focused on classifying
objects as solid, liquid, or gas by their properties and learn about how objects can change
from on state to another.
