A very warm welcome to students, especially those who will be attending our school for the first time. We hope
your educational experiences at Catalina Elementary will be both enjoyable and rewarding.
We are excited to begin the new school year and look forward to working together with students, parents,
teachers and community members to make the 2016-17 school year a successful one. Lets have a Great Year!

to Mr. Ben Dooley, Ms. Trista Pitts, and Ms. Alaina Alyward who will be joining our staff.

calendar to keep at home and make reference to on a regular basis.

Attendance
Regular attendance at school is a parents legal responsibility and the Eastern School District has a policy that
stresses the importance of regular attendance. As parents/guardians we are responsible to ensure our children
attend school on a regular basis unless there is a valid reason for an absence. If your child misses school due to
illness or another valid reason, please send along a note to the classroom teacher when your child returns.
Nutrition Policy
All schools in the Eastern School District follow a nutrition policy which emphasizes healthy eating and healthy
living. All food items served at the school will fall within the guidelines outlined in this policy. Parents are also
encouraged to support the nutrition policy by providing nutritious items in their childrens lunches. The
Nutrition Policy can be found on the Eastern School Districts webpage or a copy will be provided from the
school upon request.
Canteen/Lunch Services
Until further notice there are no Canteen/Lunch services available at Catalina Elementary. Students must pack
their own items for both recess and lunch. A synervoice message will be sent out indicating when the service
will be available.

School Development

School Development has been a very positive experience at Catalina Elementary. During the 2015-16 school
year a new School Development Plan was successfully implemented. We are looking forward to continuing
with the implementation of this plan during the 2016-17 school year.

Life Threatening Food Allergies

There are students in grades 4,6 and 8 with life threatening food allergies attending Catalina Elementary this
year. Please avoid sending products that contain eggs, nuts, or kiwi. For example, peanut butter, snacks that
contain visible nuts, eggs and kiwi fruit. If you would like more information or have any questions about a
particular product, please contact the school. Thank you for our cooperation!

Catalina Elementary Digital Citizenship Policy

In order for students to use the schools technology and/or their own electronic devices at school, they must first
review the Catalina Elementary Digital Citizenship Policy. When this policy is reviewed, the Catalina
Elementary Digital Citizenship Contact must be signed by both student and parent and returned to school. Your
child will be permitted to use technology at school when the contract is returned. A copy of the policy and
contract can be found in your childs school bag.

Student Agenda
Each student from grade 1 to grade 6 will be provided with a student agenda that has been specifically designed
for Catalina Elementary. The agenda should be used on a daily basis to record homework assignments and it is
a useful way to communicate between school and home. Please take the time to look at your childs agenda
each day!

Indoor/Outdoor Footwear
Students should have a pair of indoor sneakers with non-marking soles to use in school. Most brands indicate
whether the soles are non-marking on the box or the sneaker itself.

Security System/Lunchtime Traffic

During the school day, the main doors to Catalina Elementary will be locked. In order to gain entry to the
school, you will have to press the button on the security system (the silver box located to the right of the door),
and wait for the door to be unlocked.
Also, visitors at lunchtime are not permitted to drive their vehicles around the back of the school. During this
time our students will be playing in this area. Please turn vehicles around at the front of the building and help
us keep our children safe.

Student Information
Please complete the attached registration form and return to your childs homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

Outdoor Supervision/Leaving School Grounds

Teacher supervision will be provided from 12:25 12:43 each lunchtime to allow students to go outside.
Students in grade seven and eight may leave school grounds at lunchtime with parent permission. Parents of
these students are asked to complete and return the appropriate permission slip.

Volunteers
During the 2015-16 school year, it was great to see parents involved in the school community on a daily basis.
Some parents became involved with the School Council, while others helped out with our photocopying,
supervising on field trips, Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program, hot lunch program and warming of student
lunches.
There are many ways that parents can become involved in their childs classroom or school community.
Volunteers are welcome anytime. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your childs teacher or a
member of the administration.

Lunch Warm Ups

For a number of years, parents have volunteered their time to warm up lunches for students in grades 1-3. In
order for this to continue, we need more parents to volunteer their time from 11:55- 12:08 daily. Please contact
the school if you are able to volunteer.

Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program

The 2015-16 year was a very successful one for the Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program. The plan is to continue
this Program during the 2016-17 school year. As you are aware, a program like this is only possible when you
have community support. If you are able to volunteer your time for this program from 7:45 9:00, please
contact the school. Also, donations (financial and food) can be dropped off at the office during the school day.
The items that will be served are:
Apple and Orange Juice

Toast (cheese whiz and Jam)

Fresh Fruit

Cheese and Crackers

Cereal ( Honeycombs/Rice Krispies)

Bagels/English Muffins

By working together, this program will continue to be successful.

A date for the start up of this program will be provided when enough volunteers are in place to begin the
program. Please contact the school if you are interested in volunteering to help with the Kids Eat Smart
Breakfast Program.

Positive Behavior Supports Matrix

This year at Catalina Elementary, we will continue using the Catalina Elementary Behavioral Matrix. A copy of
this matrix is placed in the front of your childs agenda. This matrix will be reviewed with your child at school
and it is a good idea for you to discuss the matrix at home.

Medic Alerts No Child Without Program

The No Child Without Program offers a free Medic Alert membership to students who attend our school and are
between the ages of 4 up to their 14th birthday. If your child has a medical condition, allergy or is required to
take medication on a regular basis, then you should consider a MedicAlert membership through this program.
Your childs voice in an emergency, MedicAlert membership;
1. Gives emergency first responders immediate access to your childs medical information on their
MedicAlert Braclet.
2. Enables first responders to quickly obtain up to date medical information by means of the childs
Electronic Health Records through the 24 Hour Emergency Hotline.
3. Communicates with the parent or emergency contact upon activation of the Hotline.
4. Allows free updates of the childs medical record as needed.
MedicAlert identification can alert school staff, friends, coaches, and others about your childs medical
condition should an emergency occur.
For further information come to the office or visit www.nochildwithout.ca. To register your child you will
need a No Child Without brochure from the office.
If your child is already part of the No Child Without program and there have been changes to their medical
condition, medications, or emergency contact information, call MedicAlert at 1-866-679-3220 Ext 1 to
update your childs file.
