Each type of question requires a unique approach.
Must have a system for each type of question.
2. Break the Question Down
Make the question simple by breaking it down in to
topic words, key words and instruction words.
3. Answer the Specific Question
One of the main reasons students get below 7 is not
answering the specific question.
4. Idea Generation
This is the part that causes the most problems for
students- how to quickly think of relevant ideas.

5. Pick Best Ideas
Confidently select the ideas that are most relevant to the
specific question.
6. Use Information to Write a Plan

Why Idea Generation is So Difficult?
1. Students are under so much stress and pressure that their
brains freeze and stop working.
2. Many students try to think of the best ideas.

topic.

Coffee Shop Method
1. The biggest reason why students do not think of good
examples is because of stress and pressure.
2. Students in my class had no problem thinking of ideas in
normal class, but big problems in the exam.
3. Instead of thinking like you are in an exam, pretend you are
with a friend.
4. Your friend asks you a direct question. What would you say?
5. You would have no problem thinking of good ideas.

Timing
1. Planning 10 minutes
2. Checking- 5 minutes
3. 25 minutes to write your essay.
4. Most Task 2 essays will be between 10-15 sentences.
5. 12 sentences is the average using my structures.
6. 12 sentences x 2 minutes = 24 minutes.
7. 1 sentence= 2 minutes.

Vocabulary and Grammar
1. These make up 50% of your test.
2. The number one complaint that IELTS examiners make is
about language errors.
3. However, it is not because your English is not good enough- it
is something else and quite surprising for most students.

Grammar
1. Use complex sentences.
2. Use a variety of structures.
3. Most sentences must be error free.

Vocabulary
1. Use less common words and phrases.
2. Use a wide range of vocabulary.
3. Use words and phrases accurately- spelling, meaning,
collocations and word formation.
