Introduction
This guide describes the setup for Workshop delivery of Windows Server 2012 Active
Directory Domain Services
The workshop labs use Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 Pro as the
virtualization platform for the lab virtual machines. The labs will not function on prior
versions of Hyper-V, Virtual Server, Virtual PC, or third party virtualization
technologies.
Note: The images that are used are running out-dated and disabled anti-virus software, so
these images cannot be attached to any customers production network or any public
network. The final configuration of the student computers it is recommended to have
network connectivity in the classroom. This does not require a connection to any
network outside the classroom or Internet access. Network connectivity would be needed
to distribute updated lab or PowerPoint documentation.
Note: The Windows client and Windows Server virtual machines used in this workshop
are activated via KMS. The activation is only good for 180 days so it is very likely these
two VMs will need to be reactivated. If a VM requests reactivation, you can use
slmgr.vbs with the rearm option. This provides a 30-day grace period.
Usage: slmgr.vbs rearm at a command prompt in the VM.
Note that rearm can only be used 3 times, so the best practice is to get the VMs
for each delivery from what regions (and not to store them elsewhere).

Classroom Equipment and Requirements

This workshop requires a classroom with a minimum of one computer for the instructor
and one for each student. Before class begins, use the following information and
instructions to install and configure all computers.
This course requires:
One computer for the instructor running Windows 8 or Windows 2012 Server
with Hyper-V.
One computer for each student running Windows 8 or Windows 2012 Server with
Hyper-V.
o It is very useful if the student computers each have 2 monitors
Instructor computer must be connected to a projection display device that
supports at least SVGA 1024 x 768 pixels, 16-bit colors
A networked classroom is recommended. Networked means that the computers
in the classroom are networked so they can communicate with the instructors
computer. The workshop does not require Internet access or network access
outside the classroom. There are more details on network requirements below.
Whiteboard with non-permanent markers or similar.

Computer Requirements

7.

Windows 8 (64-bit).
File System: NTFS
Minimum 2.4 GHZ processor (multi-core preferred)
Minimum of 200 GB free disk space
16 GB RAM (more is better)
DVD drive Not required
VGA Monitor displaying over 1024x768 resolution

Classroom Networking Requirements

1. A network adapter is required for each computer. Wired or wireless is okay.
Classroom computers MUST be networked to each other and to the instructor
computer. However, it is not necessary for the classroom computers to
connect to any outside network or the Internet. In fact, Internet access is
discouraged for this workshop.
2. The instructors computer requires a wired connection to the classroom
network. The instructors computer CANNOT use a wireless network. The
instructor will be running a virtual machine on his computer that students
must connect to during the workshop. Since many wireless network adapters
do not support a mode that allows both the instructors host computer and the
instructors virtual machine to simultaneously access the network, the
instructors computer requires a wired network connection.
3. Student PCs must be disconnected from corporate LAN and Internet after
setting up the classroom environment / images files. Student PCs must be
networked within the classroom. If a DHCP server is not available in the
classroom (such as when you are using a wireless router with DHCP

capabilities), please configure the student PCs with appropriate IP addresses.

If you cannot configure the classroom network traffic to be isolated within the
classroom by modifying a router or physical wiring, you can still isolate the
traffic by configuring the student PCs, the trainer PC, to use a private network.
4. All PCs must be on the same subnet unless you have a properly configured
router in the classroom.
If you have a DHCP server in the classroom, you can use this for TCP/IP
configuration. If not, the best solution is still to configure all machines to use
DHCP. If a DHCP Server is not available, all machines will use Automatic
Private IP Addressing (APIPA), which will give machines unique IP
addresses in the 169.254.x.x range. In most cases, no further IP configuration
will be required. However, if you need to configure IP addresses manually,
use the 169.254.x.x range. Note that APIPA will not work properly if there is
a routed environment in the classroom (that is, a router separates student
computers) so you will need to configure IP addresses manually.

Virtualization Software Requirements

Each computer requires Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 with Hyper-V.

The virtual machines in this workshop are only supported on Windows 8

Pro or Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V. The Windows client and
Server VMs are activated through a Key Management Server.

Other Software Requirements

These requirements apply to instructor and student computers.
Microsoft Office 2010 Professional (or a newer version of Office). The
trial version can be used from www.microsoft.com.
Internet Explorer (Version 8 or newer). This can be downloaded from
www.microsoft.com.
Current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader
Also required, but not included in the training materials:
Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 installed on all computers, so the
students have access to the presentation files. Note that the full version of
PowerPoint is required. You can install the trial version of PowerPoint
from www.microsoft.com if necessary.

Virtual Machine Files for Workshop Labs (for Instructor and all
Student Computers)
The virtual machine files for this workshop are located in the same directory as
this setup guide:
C:\Exports

Microsoft Services

Each of the 8 VMs used for these labs are archived in a single WinRAR selfextracting, split archive. After download, you extract the files by running the EXE
files in the VM file folder. The executable will end with .part001.exe.
The final location of the extracted VM files on both the instructor and student
computers should be c:\exports.
After extraction you should have files for the virtual machines (a VHD file, the
virtual hard drive, and a VMC file, the virtual machine configuration). The folder
structure should be as follows:
C:\Exports\DC1-2008R2-C
C:\Exports\DC2-2012-F
C:\Exports\DC3-2012-C
C:\Exports\DC4-2012-C-FABRIKAM
C:\Exports\MS1-2012-F
C:\Exports\MS2-2008-F-Fabrikam
C:\Exports\ W7-Client
C:\Exports\ Win8-Client
Import the virtual machines. You can do this manually it isnt hard.
1) Create a virtual switch named Internal with switch type as Internal
2) Import each machine using the wizard.
Or you can do it with the script below:
<Start Copy below here>
# Import Labs
New-VMSwitch -Name internal -SwitchType Internal
import-vm -path "C:\Exports\DC1-2008R2-C\Virtual Machines\6BB0BD38-17AD-4794B5EF-E710A154B7A6.XML" -register

Workshop Files for the Instructor Computer Only

The instructor will typically already have the necessary files. However, if you
need to obtain the files for the instructor, they are found here:

The virtual machines are configured to use this amount of memory:
This is already configured on the virtual machines
Most are given 1GB of RAM. DC2-2012-F is given 2GB, but could be
cut back to 1GB if needed.
The Administrator password on all machines and domain is the same:
