Coaching for Competition

By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)

Entering your first competition is an exciting and nerve wracking affair for the student but even more
so for the coach. How can a coach make certain that his or her student is competition ready? The last
thing any coach wants is to enter five fighters into a competition, just to have all of them lose and
retire completely from MMA. And lets face it, for some students entering competition is the ultimate
goal and test of their skills and ability. Here is some advice and pointers to make sure that your
students wont become someones punch bag.
Fitness might be the single most important factor for any prospective fighter. Make sure that your
students get both an aerobic and anaerobic workout. If you can do an activity for a relatively long time
(at least 20 minutes), the energy will have to be light or moderate so that you can keep it up. This is
considered aerobic. Exercising at a high intensity - so high that you can't continue at that pace for
more than a minute or two at a time - this is anaerobic. For example running and skipping is aerobic,
while working the heavy bag and lifting weights is anaerobic exercise. Many a fighter has lost their
fight simply because they were not fit enough.
One way to make sure that your fighters can handle 3 x 3 minute rounds, is to make them spar 5 x 5
minute rounds, then rest for one minute and go at it again with a fresh opponent. Repeat this cycle 3
times. This simple exercise builds unbelievable ring fitness, and teaches your fighter to pace him or
herself.
Body conditioning is another often neglected part of a first time fighters training. We all know that no
amount of body conditioning could prepare you for what you experience during that first fight or any
other fight for that matter, but it does help. It is very disappointing to see a fighter who has been
training for months go down in the first seconds of round one, simply because he has never
experienced a proper leg kick.

INDUSTRY ADVICE
Coaching for Competition
By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)

Continued from previous page...

Evaluate each fighter and assess their weak and strong points. Try to work on the weak points, but
don't neglect to work on the strong points. A common mistake that coaches make is to spend too
much time rectifying small mistakes that are of no real significance, and neglecting to improve the
fighters stronger techniques that might win him the fight. It is certainly a good idea to rectify those
mistakes, but make sure to build on a already strong base.
Avoid teaching too many techniques that might leave the fighter striking a mental blank during the
fight. Try to focus on the basics. In other words, focus on basic positions, moving from one position to
another, basic strikes, defense, basic submissions, and basic counters and escapes from submissions
and strikes. Many of my own fighters have won their matches simply by applying the basics.
Last of all, make sure that your fighter is mentally ready for the fight. Even with the best training in the
world, a fight can be lost before the fighter even enters the ring or cage. Of all the training you can
give your students, this might be the hardest to achieve. You will have to build their confidence in their
ability, compliment their strong points, and give positive feedback all the time. Try to make them see,
that this is just a fight, and not much different to what they have been doing every day. Its all about
having fun!
Competitions are fun, but it also reflects back directly on you as a coach. It might ultimately determine
how your other students and even prospective students are going to view you in the future. So make
sure your fighters are ready before entering them in any competition! Happy training, and remember,
NEVER back down!

Loss of the Unknown

By: Ryan William Nohea Garcia

In the April issue of MMAR Magazine, I opined that the continued legitimization and growth of mixed
martial arts benefits both fighters and fans, going so far as to speculate that a UFC hegemony might
one day produce regional champions squaring off in inter-hemisphere battles that will make UFC 100
seem bush league. A major factor in the legitimization of mixed martial arts as an accepted sport has
been the widespread adoption of the unified rules of mixed martial arts, which are utilized wherever
the UFC puts on fights, including Great Britain, Germany, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Yet, the rise of the unified rules and the legitimization of mixed martial arts as a sport have not come
without their consequences.
For instance, if a consensus of fighters and fans ever favor amending the unified rules to permit knees
to the head of a grounded opponent (at least one who is not on his back) in order to reduce wrestlers
clear advantage in a cage, it will be difficult to change the unified rules. (Go here for a lively debate
on the matter.) Changing the judging criteria, which by some accounts is flawed and needs revision,
will be similarly difficult, as doing so requires the approval of nearly fifty states and a handful of
Canadian provinces. Worse perhaps, is that the adoption of the unified rules has eliminated an
important aspect of mixed martial arts original attraction the element of the unknown.
The early UFCs were epic spectacles. Pride often utilized tournament formats, and for better or
worse, provided compelling matchups likely un-sanctionable by North American athletic commissions.
Such unpredictability is rare in established sports. Baseballs rules are sacrosanct, and fundamental
changes to American football are highly unlikely. The early days of organized mixed martial arts were
so unpredictable that my friends and I had serious discussions regarding the merits of utilizing some
version of the angled fight platform from Bloodsports Kumite tournament. We would not have been
surprised, not one bit, if Pride switched to an angled platform surrounded by a moat. Mixed martial
arts was new, fresh, and wild. But those days are gone; now we speculate about the Ultimate Fighter
series, and tweet Dana White begging for requesting the screaming Pride lady to introduce Wanderlei
Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116 (go on, tweet him itd be pretty awesome).

Loss of the Unknown

Forgive my nostalgia for what is admittedly the impractical. I sound like my grandfather recounting his
days playing football in a leather helmet. But he was right to be proud of having played football in the
days of iron men and wooden ships. Likewise, fighters from the early days of mixed martial arts
should be proud of having fought in wilder times. Im certainly thankful to have had the opportunity to
witness the evolution of mixed martial arts. Three cheers to Tom Lawlor for paying homage to the era
and fighters that paved the way for modern mixed martial arts.
