Fairy Tale Analyses
The image that is going to be analyzed is Figure 11 titled, The Stinky Cheese Man:
Giant Story. From first glance its clear the message isnt meant to be entirely coherent on its
own. One other obvious image one gets from the figure is that it is made up of fairy tale photos,
giving it the sense it may be trying to create a fairytale. The way the words on the page are
arranged and the phrases the words make are all important aspects of the image.
Regarding the way the image is presented its clear that its meant to look like a sort of
photo album or collage. This idea ties into the fact the title of the image which would be the
entire book, is titled Giant Story. This means that a Giant has created this story and that makes
sense on why the images are all pasted together because Giants were often less intelligent in fairy
tales. Along with the images being pasted together so are the words on the page which can be
indicated that the image is meant to be a book of sorts. The phrases that are pasted also seem to
be from fairy tales just as the images are but they strike the imagination in a different way. The
phrases are all famous lines from different fairy tales for example, said Ill HUFF and
SNUFF and is a remarkable quote from The Three Little Pigs.
For the fact the phrases in the image that are positioned in a paragraph such as would be
in a book it shows they are meant to tell a story. The phrases are all different famous quotes from
different fairy tales as mentioned previously. Because these phrases resemble memorable fairy
tales its inferred that the reader would have to be familiar with different fairy tales. The phrases
themselves are very important to the image because they take up an entire page which means that
they play an important role in understanding the entire image and why everything is pasted. The
different fonts that the pasted together phrases have also play an important role in imagery and
conveying the fact that the phrases are all from different stories. The font gives the phrases a life

of their own so to speak and they play along with the pasted together images on the right page of
Figure 11.
The different images that are pasted together on the right side of Figure 11 all convey a
different aspect of a fairytale. What makes these images unique is that they are fairytales that
would have been printed in books and would have had their own images so that they could be
recognizable. The reader would need to be familiar with common images in a fairytale as well so
that the piece would make more sense. The phrases on the left of the page are all scrambled
together like the images on the right of the page which is important in the subtle meaning of the
image. The reason for the miss matched pairing of images and phrases could be satirical, such as
the author is critiquing fairy tales or society through the fairy tales.
One other important aspect of the image is that the Giant that the story is named after is
spoken of in the image as if they are a reader along with the audience. Jack is the second
character and this alludes to Jack and the Giant Beanstalk. The Giant isnt visible except for
his fingers holding the page and the character who must be Jack is seen angrily looking over. The
image of him isnt something that would be appealing to children. The words the two characters
exchange brings evidence to the fact that the story is indeed created by the Giant. This further
implies that the readers are meant to be familiar with the fairy tale genre.
The colors of the image are dark and gives it the feeling its meant to be understood more
seriously but at the same time enjoyable by the chaos of the images. The words and images
together give Figure 11 the sense of a fairytale created by all other fairy tales. Because
everything in the image is made up of other fairy tales it gives the sense that all the images give
the figure the power to tell a story. The fonts of the phrases are also all unique just as the images
are all unique in the way they were created. Although the images and phrases arent unique the

overall image is that one of someone trying to create something unique by pasting other unique
aspects together.
