District Native Offers Foster Children Life-Changing Getaway

Being adopted at an
early age did not hinder
what Stacie Turner would
ultimately become. After
growing up with a family
that encouraged her to obtain
what she wanted in life, she
set out to encourage teens
with similar backgrounds and
provide them with the same
motivation she received.
“I have always looked
at what was different in my
life and it was the fact that I
had a loving and supporting
family that provided the best
for me,” Turner said. “They
provided the best home life,
the best education and the
nurturing that a number of
foster children don’t have.”
Through her parents’

and really achieve whatever
it is that they have set for
themselves.”
According to Turner, the
program introduces teen
girls to numerous people
who have found success in
various professions, hoping
to promote inspiration.
“We provide what we call
‘extra-ordinary experiences’
where we interface our
girls with people who have
excelled in a variety of
different fields and people
who have defied the odds to
be successful, because you
can’t aspire to be somebody
if you’ve never even seen
what’s possible,” Turner said.
With Extra-Ordinary Life,
Turner also seeks to expose
teens to other cultures around
the globe. The organization is
currently gearing up for a trip
to South Africa for the World
Cup in July.
“We wanted to expose
the girls to different people
and places and let them have
an experience with other
orphan girls that are there
in the country,” Turner said.
“This will broaden their
viewpoint of the world and
hopefully inspire them to
see that it’s not about just
their circumstances here
in Washington D.C., it is
about them being able to
do whatever it is what they
desire no matter where they
are.
“Our goal is to show
them what they can be and
intersect them with people
who can help clear the path
and create the opportunity
for them to succeed,” Turner
said. “They will desire to be
great and we can help get
them on the path to get them
there.”

in the Washington, D.C. area.
Over 100 events are planned
at various CVS locations
throughout the summer and
fall. The fair will offer free
blood pressure, diabetes,
cholesterol and osteoporosis
screenings, among an

assessments.
Dr. Ian Smith, celebrity
doctor, diet expert and
founder of the “50 Million
Pound Challenge,” will serve
as the program’s ambassador
for the first event in the
District.
The AFRO spoke to Dr.
Smith about his involvement
in the fair and its importance
to the D.C. community.
AFRO: Can you explain
why you believe this fair is
important?

While it
might seem
like just
Paul Evans yesterday, it’s
been 40 years
since that afternoon in May 1970. Sitting in
Frances’ news bureau office at Morgan State, I
listened appreciatively as she spun the wheels
of my future into motion, telling how I would
come down immediately to be interviewed for
a City Desk reporter’s position.
What a fortunate opportunity working at
the paper was for a lively young man fresh
from college with a passion for writing.
When I arrived on the City Desk that
summer of 1970, I joined the company of an
illustrious publication heralded nationally
and internationally as one of the newspapers
– along with the Chicago Defender and the
Pittsburgh Courier – most outstanding among
Black publications in the world. “… the Afro-
American became one of the top three black
newspapers in the United States, matching
its competitors the Chicago Defender and
the Pittsburgh Courier in circulation and
influence,” The Encyclopedia of the Harlem
Renaissance says.
It was almost like working on a daily.
Thirteen editions such as Five Star, Nine Star
(National edition), Red Star, New England,
South Carolina, Richmond, New Jersey, Late
City, and Philadelphia were run five days a
week at the Baltimore plant and “put out” by a
large, dedicated staff that took immense pride
in the papers’ local and national stature.

cavernous composing room as they typeset
and laid out the next edition; listening to John
Murphy order press paper; remembering
Bettye Moss’ reaction when she recognized a
sell-out page one story and descending into the
pressroom to watch true Black power as the
printed AFRO shot from trusty conveyor belts.
Never again will there be a time like
my first AFRO years, the boiling turmoil
and unrestrained clamor of Black racial
assertiveness exploding all around, loud, bold,
and unrepentant. Reporting, particularly at this
paper, is one of the few jobs where one person
could literally go everywhere, see everything,
and meet everyone.
When Prince Charles and Princess Anne of
Great Britain visited the White House during
my first reporting summer, the AFRO got me
there. I was in the Rose Garden for the arrival
ceremonies and met Nancy Dickerson of NBC
News who graciously introduced me to Chet
Huntley and David Brinkley.
When I attended a local press conference,
George C. Wallace, then governor of Alabama,
sat facing a large, boisterous contingent of the
national and local press corps. I knew he was
going to call on me because I was the only
Black reporter in the room. I was prepared to
ask an important non-racial question when he
acknowledged my hand.
Those assignments serve as a brief
testimony to the paper’s clout and stature.
Humbling experiences, truly, because as an
AFRO writer, I joined a long list of luminaries
hired by the paper over decades, including:

Redding, Kelly Miller, Claude McKay, James
Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, Charles
H. Houston, Countee
Cullen, E. B. Rea,
Ralph Matthews Sr.,

When Will We Finally Stop Burying Our Children?

(NNPA) — People often
ask me to deliver words of
comfort and strength during
some of their most challenging
moments in life. Throughout
the decades, I have stood side
by side with family members
of those that have been
wrongfully killed in acts of
violence – whether those acts
were committed by police or
from within the community
itself. I have witnessed the
unbearable heartache of
countless grandmothers,
grandfathers, parents and
children who may very well

Each and every time, I feel
the pain – their pain – at so senselessly losing a human life in
what is often a matter of minutes or even seconds. But nothing
is more difficult or more disconcerting than when I receive a
phone call regarding the shooting death of a mere child. A little
over a week ago, I got that ill-fated call.
This past weekend, family, friends and concerned citizens in
Detroit gathered to bury 7-year-old Aiyana Jones. Killed at the
hands of the Detroit police department in a highly questionable
raid that involved a stunt grenade and guns, the precious child
quickly became a symbol of the tragic epidemic sweeping
cities and towns all across this nation. As more and more
guns inundate our streets, and violence is used as a means of
resolving even the slightest conflict, when will we finally stop
burying our children and instead lay our weapons to rest?
Let me be clear, in no way am I dismissing the police
department’s actions or accountability in young Aiyana’s death.
As I stated during her eulogy on Saturday, we will ensure that
a thorough, uncompromising and independent investigation
into her death will take place. And we will collectively
hold everyone – including the state police – accountable for
explaining precisely what took place during that fateful raid,
who was responsible and what the consequences of his or her
actions will be. But as we continue to hold authorities liable for
their dubious actions, we cannot forget to hold ourselves liable,
too.
Just a few days before Aiyana’s horrific death, a 69-year-
old Detroit grandmother was shot and killed by a stray bullet
as she was cooking dinner in her own home. And as we are
all so vividly aware, this plague of violence is not unique to
Detroit alone; all we often have to do is simply look in our own
neighborhoods. As we laid Aiyana to rest over the weekend, a
20-year-old was shot dead at a reunion for a high school junior
class in Queens, N.Y., while two other 19-year-olds were killed
in another incident in the borough of the Bronx. Just during this
weekend alone, who knows how many countless other young
souls we lost all across the country?
As we demand answers from the Detroit police department,
we must demand answers from ourselves. We cannot
continue to speak of guns and catastrophic violence as if it is
something that doesn’t affect each and every one of us. Start an
organization, speak to our youth, create after-school programs,
run for office, attend community meetings or simply be a
mentor to someone who needs the appropriate guidance to put
down their weapons. As my dear friend Michael Jackson used
to say, we must start with the man in the mirror and we must
ask ourselves to change our ways.
We painfully watched as Aiyana’s tiny coffin was buried
6 feet under on Saturday, and I refuse to see any more of our
young meet the same fate. We all must act now.

The Psychological Dimensions of White Supremacy

The CNN cable news
program “Anderson Cooper
360˚” recently aired a four-
part series devoted to the
subject of race in America.
The program, “Black or
White: Kids on Race,”
featured a new study based
upon the research of Dr.
Kenneth B. Clark’s infamous
doll test of the 1940s and
‘50s. In the new study,
young people were given
illustrations of other children,
ranging from White to Black,
and were asked to identify
which picture best depicted
the smart, not smart, good and
bad child.
The results, a shock to
some, yet not a surprise to
others, both revealed and
verified what Black leaders,
Black scholars and other
Black consciousness oriented
activists have been saying
for years: that regardless of
age and in spite of the social
advancements Blacks have
made in America, White
supremacy is so deeply
engrained, it has become a
virtually involuntary reflex.
Requiring a remedy that goes
to the root of this problem,
it is more than obvious that
symptom oriented solutions
will not do in eliminating the
mutually destructive mindsets
of White supremacy and
Black inferiority.
Among the dozens of
Black and White children
tested in this new study, a
significant majority identified
Whiteness with likeability,
success, intelligence and
good behavior, while
identifying Blackness with
non-likeability, failure, a
lack of intelligence and bad
behavior. As these results
spurred angst, shock and
worry not only from the
parents, but also from among
the program’s commentators,
missing from the equation
was consideration of the
racist nature of Western
culture itself and its
subtleties concerning color
consciousness.
Regarding the history of
political Christianity, after its
spread from the Middle East
into Europe, changes and a
new consensus occurred not
only in its accepted teachings
by the fourth century, but
also in how its central figures
were portrayed. Good and
holiness was associated with
Whiteness, while evil and
the unholy was portrayed
as Blackness. With Jesus,
his mother and the angels
depicted as White, while
demons, devils and wicked
people were often shown
as Black, prejudices would
likewise reflect these
associations as conflict
with darker skinned people,
colonialism and European
hegemony became the order
of the day.
For example, as
Western cultural heritage
encompasses, as part of
its legacy, the history
of Mediterranean based
events, cultures and myths,
the narrative that depicted
dark skinned or swarthy
complexioned people as
pale or White, occurred with
the shifting of the region’s
social, economic and political
dynamics. As innovation
and change was accepted
and mastered in Europe, the
artistic depiction of those who
brought such knowledge also
changed.
For instance, as Islamic
Spain grew and developed
from the social, cultural
and political influences
of Africans, resentment
of them grew in Europe
until war forced the Moors
off the Iberian Peninsula.
Downplaying, if not ignoring,
non-White contributions to
Europe’s Renaissance Period,
to this day hostility remains,
albeit in the form of socio-
religious dialectics, secular
globalism and sentiments
against what is currently
viewed as Euro-American
hegemony in the non-White
world.
Regarding the Americas,
the trans-Atlantic slave
trade, and the conquering of
the Western hemisphere’s
indigenous people, further
propelled the myth of white
supremacy. As justification
for slavery and continental
expansionism was often made
through religious argument,
pseudo-science and a general
belief in “the White man’s
burden,” the Americas was
developed at the expense of
the Black and indigenous
peoples. However, as Blacks
and other people of color
eventually conformed to the
established order, and defined
themselves through the prism
of European culture, the
present symbiosis between
white supremacy and black
inferiority was sealed in the
West.
Nevertheless, with the
emergence of Black pride and
Black consciousness oriented
movements, a remedy to
these poisonous mindsets was
formulated through sacrifice
and struggle. In the United
States, for example, with
Marcus Garvey’s Universal
Negro Improvement
Association (UNIA), The
Nation of Islam under the
Elijah Muhammad and the
eventual emergence of Black
Nationalist movements in
the 1960s and early 1970s, in
spite of the U.S. government’s
vigorous opposition, efforts
were made to defeat the
mindsets of White supremacy
and Black inferiority.
Accordingly, as far as the
masses of Black Americans
are concerned, and based
upon CNN’s four-part series,
not much has changed
regarding perceptions of
self and others since Dr.
Clark’s doll test in the 1940s.
As the new study proved
that both Black and White
children have a bias in favor
of light skin color, solving
the problems of supremacy
and inferiority will require a
renewed effort among Whites
and Blacks alike to confront
the legacy of America’s ugly
history.
Today, as the few voices
that cry in the wilderness for
freedom, justice and equality
continue to press for redress,
the psychological dimensions
of white supremacy
cannot be overlooked or
dismissed. While it may be
uncomfortable for Whites
to recognize their privileged
position came from the
systematic dehumanization
and degradation of the Black
man, America’s redemption
lies only in her willingness
to atone for what she has
done and to break up the
twin mentalities of White
supremacy and Black
inferiority. Anything less is
disingenuous and any solution
that fails to recognize racism’s
root will not be successful.

founded in 2002, held its annual fundraiser on May 23, 2010
at the Broadwater Estate in Upper Marlboro, Md. As part of
the ceremony, the school provided a photographic exhibition
of Dr. Dorothy I. Height’s visit to the school, which included a
speech at their 2010 Black History Month Program. A school
lab was dedicated in memory of Dr. Height, in recognition of
the special love, inspiration and support she provided to the
students and in honor of her quest for knowledge and equal

NBA Player Zach Randolph Tied to Drug Charges

Memphis Grizzlies star Zach Randolph
has been tied to drug charges after one of his
friends was stopped in Indianapolis driving
a truck owned by the NBA player that
contained marijuana, The Associated Press
reported.
According to the AP, court documents
state that Arthur Boyd, 32, was arrested on
May 11 during a routine traffic stop after
police discovered three ounces of marijuana
in a cooler inside the Cadillac Escalade,
which was registered in Randolph’s name.
Boyd, a longtime associate of Randolph, was
arrested after police followed up on a tip that
Randolph was involved with Indianapolis-
area drug dealers, according to the AP.
Randolph has not been arrested or charged
with a crime in connection with Boyd’s
arrest. Randolph’s attorney, John Tompkins,
told reporters on May 27 that his client
denies any involvement with drug activity.
According to Tompkins, the man
arrested is a longtime friend who takes care
of Randolph’s home in Indianapolis.

Producer Brings International Flair to Urban Music

Mase, a Florida-based producer with a growing list of
celebrity clients, is poised to make a powerful impact on the
music industry. Laser-focused, with a no-compromise attitude
and strong business acumen, he is quickly making headway in
the music industry.
Mase was born in Libreville, the capital city of Gabon,
Africa, and attended school in France. After graduation, he
moved to the United States, where he obtained a bachelor’s
degree in international relations.
The producer said his true calling is music, however, and
he’s combined his heritage, studio knowledge and musical
talents to launch Miami-based DMS Entertainment, signing
rising stars and solo artists CaMille and Alexandra to his new
label.
Mase recently discussed his love of music, what it takes to
be a good producer and his goals for DMS.
AFRO: Growing up in Gabon, when were you first exposed
to music?
Mase: I have been exposed to music since I was little. I
was always attracted by the beat first, not by the lyric. It’s
something that makes me move; something in you that you
cannot explain — drums, sounds, all of that. When I listen to a
song, I listen to the beat first.
I grew up on a lot of African music, Michael Jackson of
course, Madonna and Prince. I learned about rap from a friend
of mine in Gabon. I didn’t speak English, so it was amazing
to me to hear Snoop flowing on the beat “Deep Cover” that he
did with Dre — the beat blew me away, the way he rapped on
it.
AFRO: How did being in the U.S. expand your musical
tastes and knowledge?
Mase: In California I was around a lot of people who love
music. I went to concerts and knew what I wanted to do. I
have always listened to different genres of music; my first CD
was by Nirvana. I still like rock music, but what I love most is
hip hop, R&B and some pop. If I hear a good song, it doesn’t
matter the genre. In my music you get the feel of rock, African,
American and European. My sound is really different because
I’ve lived in a lot of different places.
AFRO: In addition to being a producer, are you also a
musician or songwriter?
Mase: I write songs, but I would not say I’m a songwriter,
because that is not what I do all the time. I can write and give
concepts, which was hard to do at the beginning because I did
not know much English. Sometimes I make a track and have
lyrics for a song. Three years ago my best friend — my dad
— died and I made a beat with a song in my head for him. The
song is called “We Miss You” and it is on iTunes. It took me a
long time to get in the studio and do it.
AFRO: Tell me more about CaMille and Alexandra.
Mase: A friend of mine brought CaMille to me. She is from
Guyana. I didn’t like the direction she had, so I worked with
her and switched things around. I produced most of her album.
We did a video for “Superman Lover,” which I produced. It
is getting a good response. Her single is on iTunes. Someone
I worked with brought Alexandra to me. We worked on her
album and I produced a couple of songs. She’s pop/rock/R&B
with an edge. I produced her new single, “Atten Hut,”
(available on iTunes) with Dimarco, and it’s a really great
song. It’s getting a lot of response.
AFRO: There are risks involved in launching a company.
How did you prepare to launch DMS Entertainment?
Mase: It costs a lot of money to start a company, but
besides the music, I love to do business. I always had a drive
to be successful and involved in a lot of different things. If you
do something, you always are taking a risk, so I’m fortunate
to be in a situation where I am able to put money into my own
company. I’m not Bill Gates, I’m not rich, but you have to
know how to spend and spend it right.
AFRO: What’s next for you?
Mase: Right now, it’s getting my two artists’ projects
out there. I want to do a lot of things — clothing, movies,
businesses between the U.S. and Africa. I want a charity
to help children in the U.S. and Africa. My goal is to be an
example for the younger generation and to inspire children to
do their best. If I am able to do that with my life, at the end of
the day I will be happy.

Author Promotes Black Health By Any ‘Greens’ Necessary

Traditional Black
American cuisine, often
dubbed “soul food,” was
birthed during an era when
enslaved African Americans
relied on high-fat, high-
calorie foods for sustenance
and survival. While soul food
is not inherently unhealthy,
foods like collard greens,
turnips and okra are often
stewed in lard, bacon fat and
other greasy products.
But Tracye McQuirter,
a Washington, D.C.-based
author, vegan and chef,
says Black Americans must
transcend the savory dishes
of their ancestors and develop
plant-based diets that are both
nourishing and appealing.
Considering the health
ailments disproportionately
plaguing African Americans –
hypertension, diabetes, heart
disease – McQuirter’s vegan
movement has been met with
resounding approval.
In 2008, McQuirter
directed the nation’s first
federally funded and
community-based vegan
informational program.
The initiative, developed
with funding from the U.S.
Department of Health and
Human Services, targeted
low-income District residents
and highlighted the health
benefits of vegan living.
The District-born health
advocate is also co-founder of

you found that many Black
women you encounter are
wary of veganism or have
they generally been receptive
to the idea of cutting animal
products from their diet?
Tracye McQuirter:
There are millions of Black
people, particularly women,
who are already vegan.
In fact, Black women are
pioneers in the movement to
eat more healthy plant-based
foods…What I have found
is that once women have
the information showing
that these are diet-related,
preventable diseases that can
be eliminated by eating vegan
foods, most women are very
receptive to learning more
and eating healthier. There are
some who say that they can’t
give up their chicken, and I
share a funny story about that
in the book in the chapter
titled “A Chicken Wing and
a Prayer.” But overall, I am

KW: What inspired you to
turn “Are We There Yet?” into
a TV sitcom?

something really, really good. 
KW: Did you have a
debate about the title, since
the movie sequel had been

Yet?” was the perfect title,
because it’s such a common

making something with a

any color or creed and from
all walks of life can enjoy and

and apple crumb pie. There
are thousands of scrumptious
vegan foods out there.

the transition from rapper to
actor to producer.
IC: Well, for the transition
from rapper to actor, I was
fortunate that director John
Singleton pursued me for
about two years to be in
Boyz ‘N the Hood. I really
wasn’t even thinking about
acting at the time, since I was
singularly focused on being
the best rapper in the world.
So, that was really a blessing,
because I wasn’t really taking
him seriously.
Therefore, I can’t really
attribute my success onscreen
to any formula and suggest
you “do this or that” to make
it as an actor. However, as far
as producing, once we started

AFRO: What is your
advice for a transitioning
vegan who still craves meat?
Are there recipes featured in
“By Any Greens Necessary”
that may help combat these
cravings?
TM: Most of the herbs
and spices we use to season
meat dishes come from plants
anyway, so it’s the flavor from
the seasonings that we’re
really after. So for vegetables
and bean dishes, skip the
turkey or ham bits, and try a
product called Liquid Smoke
to give it that rich smoky
flavor you’re looking for. You
can also add red onions, fresh
garlic and ginger sautéed in
olive oil, along with your
favorite fresh or dried herbs,
such as basil, thyme, oregano,
cayenne pepper, and curry.
Spike or Trocamere brands
make great all-in-one dried
herb seasonings. And one
of my favorite replacements
for table salt is Bragg Liquid
Aminos, a healthier version
of soy sauce. These products
are available at health food
stores and many grocery store
chains.
AFRO: Out of the 40
recipes in your book, which
ones are your favorites?
TM: It’s hard to pick just
one. I love the spicy black
beans, classic cornbread,
spicy collard greens and
where the critical decisions
about the movies were really
being made, and it wasn’t on
the set. They were being made
in the production meetings.
That’s where producing
a movie happens. And that’s
where I wanted to be. I didn’t
just want to be a piece, a
pawn being played. I wanted
to take part in the creative
process, and that’s how I sort

suggest parents introduce
veganism to their older
children accustomed to eating
meat?
TM: My youngest niece
is 4 years old and a vibrant
vegan. She loves to help cook
and she loves to eat what
she cooks. So my first tip
is to cook vegan foods with
your kids. It may take more
time and be a bit messy, but
the rewards are so great. In
addition to cooking with your
kids, I suggest encouraging
your older kids watch videos
and read books about the
benefits of vegan foods, the
cruelty of factory farming for
animals, and how veganism
can save the planet and stop
global warming. In other
words, tell them the truth and
help them make informed
decisions about what to put on
their plate.
AFRO: Are you planning
a follow-up book to “By Any
Greens Necessary?” What
projects do you have on the
horizon?
TM: I love to write, so
yes, I have more books in the
works. I also plan to have a
vegan lifestyle show, and I
hope to work with first lady
Michelle Obama to promote
plant-based foods to prevent
and reverse childhood obesity.
