Rocio Restrepo Wins PWBA

St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open
By Matt Cannizzaro - PWBA
ADDISON, Ill. Rocio Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio,
may have been disappointed by the show she and
Lindsay Boomershine of Perry, Utah, put on in the
championship match of the 2016 Professional
Womens Bowling Association St. PetersburgClearwater Open, but the sound of two-time PWBA
champion over the public address system definitely
had a mood-changing ring to it.
Restrepo, who won the PWBA Greater Detroit
Open earlier in the year for her first title, claimed her
second at the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open
with a 165-134 win over Boomershine at Stardust
Bowl. It was the lowest scoring title match in PWBA
history with a 299 total pinfall.
The record previously belonged to Anne Marie
Duggan and Cheryl Daniels, who posted a 306 total
with games of 166 and 140, respectively, in March
1993. The lowest single-game pinfall in a championship game belongs to Toni Gillard, who shot 133 in
a 1985 loss.
I obviously feel happy that I won, but I definitely
wanted to throw it better, said Restrepo, a longtime
member of the Colombian national bowling team.

Sometimes, the lights and how the lanes are broken

down in practice can change things quite a bit. I just
made sure to stick to my strategy, and I stayed
focused on doing what I needed to do to stay ahead.
Restrepo joins three-time winner Shannon OKeefe
of OFallon, Illinois, and reigning PWBA Player of
the Year Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York
(two wins), as the only competitors with multiple
titles in 2016.
Along with the $10,000 top prize, the win gave
Restrepo enough competition points to land her in
second place on the 2016 PWBA points list, earning
her an automatic spot in the semifinals of the upcoming Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship.
Not only will the PWBA Tour Championship wrap
up the 2016 season, it also will determine the player
of the year, which is based on total points for the season.
Heading into the final event, only two competitors
have a chance at the honor Restrepo and Johnson.
If Restrepo wins the tournament, she gets the playerof-the-year nod and redemption for a bitter end to the
2015 season. Anything less than a win from Restrepo,
and Johnson repeats.

Michael Haugen Wins PBA Xtra Frame

Gene Carters Pro Shop Classic
By Bill Vint - PBA
MIDDLETOWN, Del. Michael Haugen Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., a
noted old school bowler who defies contemporary power-game
standards, was nearly perfect in defeating Bill ONeill of
Langhorne, Pa., 289-255, to win the PBA Tour Xtra Frame Gene
Carters Pro Shop Classic at Mid-County Bowling and
Entertainment.
Haugen, in winning his fifth career PBA Tour title, started with 10
strikes before leaving a 4 pin to end his bid for a perfect game.
Playing straight up the lanes with minimal hook by todays standards, Haugen picked up his first title since winning the 2014 PBA
Scorpion Championship.
Like they say in movies, Im old but not obsolete, Haugen said.
Today straight was great. I got to play my A game and it was
good.
Haugen tripped a couple of high-pocket shots, but, You need to
catch a few breaks out here to win and today I was lucky enough to
get them, he said. I really wanted to win again.
Haugen, who turns 50 in December, noted his fifth win means hes
halfway to PBA Hall of Fame eligibity, but he hasnt given up hope.
Number five is halfway. Its a long way to go when youre almost
50, but you never know, he said. Maybe someday Ill make it to
the hall. Thats what drives me.
In the semifinal match, ONeill broke up a 7-10 split in the ninth
frame to keep a string of five strikes intact in a 244-235 win over
John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y., ending Szczerbinskis
bid for his first PBA title.
In the first stepladder match, ONeill struck on eight of his first
nine shots to send two-hander Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., to
the sidelines, 255-220.

Hui Fen Won Smithfield PWBA Championship

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Singapore's
New Hui Fen captured the 2016
Smithfield Professional Women's
Bowling
Association
Tour
Championship at Uptown Alley.
New defeated her Team
Singapore teammate Cherie Tan in
the championship match, 258-235,
to win her first PWBA title. The
championship round was broadcast
live on CBS Sports Network.
The exciting all-Singapore final
was the highest-scoring match of
the day as New started with five
consecutive strikes, before a 4 pin in
the sixth frame derailed her chance
at perfection.
After tossing one strike during the
first four frames, Tan closed the gap
with strikes in frames five through
nine, which forced New to strike or
spare in the last frame to win the
final event, and fourth major of the
2016 PWBA season. New left a 10
pin on the first shot of her 10th
frame and converted the spare to
claim the victory and the $20,000
prize.
"I think this win will impact many
other players like how Joseph
Schooling has impacted all of
Singapore with his win in swimming at the Olympics," New said.
"What he said was really true, 'even
people from the smallest country
can do great things.' So, I believe
our neighboring countries will look
at us and say 'wow, if they can do it,
so can we.'"
The PWBA Tour experienced an
influx of international talent this
season with Team Singapore playing a big role in the second year of
the re-launched Tour.
New capped off a season that
included third-place finishes at the
Nationwide PWBA Sonoma
County Open and PWBA Storm
Sacramento Open, and a fourth
place finish at the U.S. Women's
Open.
In the process, New became the
fourth player from Singapore over
the last two seasons to win a PWBA
event or major championship.
Jazreel Tan won the 2015 PWBA
Lubbock Sports Open, Bernice Lim
won the 2016 United States
Bowling Congress Queens and

Cherie Tan captured the 2016

PWBA Storm Sacramento Open.
Despite competing in just six
events this season, New earned
enough competition points to secure
another coveted title - 2016 PWBA
Rookie of the Year.
The 24-year-old right-hander
entered the Smithfield PWBA Tour
Championship needing to defeat
fellow rookie Jennifer Higgins of
Westerville, Ohio, in the opening
round of match play and Danielle
McEwan of Stony Point, New York,
in Round 2, to secure enough points
to win the award.
New is the first international rookie of the year since Australia's Cara
Honeychurch in 2000.
New earned her spot in the cham-

pionship match by defeating twotime PWBA champion Rocio

Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio, 213189. Tan knocked off Liz Johnson
of Cheektowaga, New York, 199195, in the first semifinal.
Despite the loss, Johnson, a
USBC Hall of Famer, claimed her
second consecutive PWBA Player
of the Year award. The race for the
postseason honor came down to
Johnson and Restrepo, with
Restrepo needing to win the Tour
Championship to claim the award.
With Restrepo's loss in the second
semifinal, Johnson became the first
player since Wendy Macpherson in
2000 to win the award in consecutive years.
This year, Johnson led the Tour in

points, earnings and tied for the lead

in championship-round appearances. She also won two events this
season, the PWBA Las Vegas Open

Rookie Francois Lavoie Tops

PBA Wolf Open Qualifying
Native Canadian to bowl for first PBA Tour title
in opening event of PBA Fall Swing
By Bill Vint - PBA
ALLEN PARK, Mich. Canadian native Francois Lavoie, now living in
Wichita, Kan., earned the top berth for the stepladder finals of the
PBA Wolf Open as the Professional Bowlers Association Fall Swing
got underway at Thunderbowl Lanes.
Lavoie, who starred with the Wichita State University bowling program, averaged 239.83 for his 12 qualifying games to claim the lead
with a total of 2,878 pins, 76 ahead Australias two-handed star Jason
Belmonte. The 24-year-old rookie, bowling in only his fourth PBA
Tour event, will make his national television debut on CBS Sports
Network on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m.
It should be exciting. Im looking forward to it, Lavoie said. Im
just drinking up all the experiences.
After ranking third in the first eight games bowled earlier in the
main section of Thunderbowl Lanes, Lavoie dominated competition
Monday night when the second six-game round was bowled in
Thunderbowls historic arena bay, built in 1961 as a showcase for
premier bowling competition.
I think the surface on the lanes in the bay was a little different, so
it played different than the main center, Lavoie said, but it was still
fairly understandable if you were able to do the right thing with ball
motion. And I was able to do that pretty well.
Lavoie, who grew up in Quebec City, is living in Wichita on a temporary visa, but plans to apply for a athlete visa to stay here fulltime.
As long as I want to be a competitive bowler, I think I need to be
in the U.S. and Wichita is pretty centrally located to a lot of competitive bowling. Plus its a great city, he said.
Belmonte, the three-time reigning PBA Player of the Year, is trying
for his 13th PBA Tour title, but first of the 2016 season. He qualified
for his eight career PBA Summer/Fall Swing television final, one shy
of Bill ONeills record in the fourth annual multi-event program.
Eighteen-time PBA Tour champion Chris Barnes of Double Oak,
Texas, fired a 300 game earlier Monday to take the early lead but
slipped to third place in the evening session. Barnes, 46, is seeking
his first title on U.S. soil since winning the 2013 PBA Viper Open in
Las Vegas. Barnes most recent titles were won in Qatar (2014) and
Japan (2015).
Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., qualified fourth and 19-yearold Texas two-hander Anthony Simonsen, a leading contender in the
2016 PBA Player of the Year race, slipped past Kris Prather of
Milton, Fla., by six pins in the final game to clinch the fifth stepladder berth.
The Wolf Open stepladder finals will be conducted on Saturday,
Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. for telecast on CBS Sports Network on
Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m. ET.
The first six games in the Wolf, Bear and Badger Opens count as
the qualifying legs to determine the 18 players who will advance to
the Detroit Open qualifying finals on Thursday. The PBA Fall Swing
continues with two rounds of Bear Open qualifying, followed by two
rounds of Badger Open qualifying. All preliminary rounds of the Fall
Swing are being covered live, exclusively on PBAs online video
streaming channel, Xtra Frame. For subscription information, visit

Tom Carter Auctioneer

In addition to being a PBA50 Tour
competitor and pro shop operator in
Columbus, Ohio, Tom Carter has a
hidden talent: he grew up as the son
of a well-known auctioneer in
Peoria, Ill., and acquired some of his
fathers skills in the process.
Recently, Carter served as
guest auctioneer at a fund-raising auction during the annual
meeting of the Mail Pouch
Barnstormers, a small group of
dedicated volunteers who are trying to preserve and restore historic
Mail Pouch Tobacco signs and
barns across the east-central United
States. Carters efforts helped the
Barnstormers raise nearly $700,
which helped pay for the restoration
of an historic Mail Pouch sign on a
barn located in Barkcamp State
Park near Belmont, Ohio.

The End of Summer Classic shootout was a

good one with another exciting finish. James
was giving handicap to the three shootout
finalists but their advantage quickly disappeared as they had multiple opens and James
stayed clean through the first 8 frames. Going
into the 9th frame Gary had a 2 pin lead over
James and amazingly both opened in the 9th.
Gary shot first in the final frame and he
chopped a spare to leave the door open for
James. James doubled in the tenth to win the
title and the big money.
