WELCOME AND
COLLECTION OF PRAYERS and THANKSGIVINGS
INVOCATION
All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the
presiding minister begins.

INTRODUCTION
As we are invited today to consider what it means to be managers (rather
than owners) of all that we have, it is crucial to recall that we are bought
with a price. Christ Jesus, himself human, . . . gave himself a ransom for
all. Apart from the generosity of God we have nothingwe are nothing.
By Gods gracious favor we have everything we need.

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow

bags and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also
available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to
vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship
service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and
Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in
the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
God of compassion, whose Son became poor for our sake: Help us to see
the face of Christ in those who are poor, and in serving them to serve you.
Give us generous hearts so that those living in poverty may have adequate
food, clothing, and shelter. By your Spirit move us to affirm the dignity of
all people and to work for just laws that protect the most vulnerable in
society; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
GATHERING SONG O Savior, Precious Savior (ELW 820)

PSALM 79:1-9

Let us pray.
God among us, we gather in the name of your Son to learn love for one

Lord.
Amen.

FIRST READING

Jeremiah 8:18-9:1

18My joy is gone, grief is upon me,

my heart is sick.
19Hark, the cry of my poor people
from far and wide in the land:
Is the LORD not in Zion?
Is her King not in her?
(Why have they provoked me to anger with their images,
with their foreign idols?)
20The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
and we are not saved.
21For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt,
I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me.
22Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then has the health of my poor people
not been restored?
9:1O that my head were a spring of water,
and my eyes a fountain of tears,
so that I might weep day and night
for the slain of my poor people!
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have profaned
your | holy temple;
they have made Jerusalem a | heap of rubble.
2
They have given the bodies of your servants as food for the birds | of
the air,
and the flesh of your faithful ones to the beasts | of the field.
3
They have shed their blood like water on every side | of Jerusalem,
and there was no one to | bury them.
4
We have become a reproach | to our neighbors,
an object of scorn and derision to | those around us. R
5

How long will you be an- | gry, O LORD?

Will your fury blaze like | fire forever?
6
Pour out your wrath upon the nations who | have not known you
and upon the kingdoms that have not called up- | on your
name.
7
For they have de- | voured Jacob
and made his dwell- | ing a ruin.
8
Remember not our past sins; let your compassion be | swift to meet us;
for we have been brought | very low.
9
Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory | of your name;
deliver us and forgive us our sins, | for your names sake. R
SECOND READING 1 Timothy 2:1-7
1

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and

thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2for kings and all who are in high
positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness
and dignity. 3This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our

Savior, 4who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of

the truth. 5For
there is one God;
there is also one mediator between God and humankind,
Christ Jesus, himself human,
6who gave himself a ransom for all
this was attested at the right time.7For this I was appointed a herald and
an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles
in faith and truth.

manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering
his property. 2So he summoned him and said to him, What is this that I
hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you
cannot be my manager any longer. 3Then the manager said to himself,
What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I
am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4I have decided
what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome
me into their homes. 5So, summoning his masters debtors one by one, he
asked the first, How much do you owe my master? 6He answered, A
hundred jugs of olive oil. He said to him, Take your bill, sit down quickly,
and make it fifty. 7Then he asked another, And how much do you owe?
He replied, A hundred containers of wheat. He said to him, Take your bill
and make it eighty. 8And his master commended the dishonest manager
because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd
in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9And I
tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that
when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.
10Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and
whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. 11If then you
have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you
the true riches? 12And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to
another, who will give you what is your own? 13No slave can serve two
masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be
devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and
wealth.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL Luke 16:1-13

As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon
their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently
praying, May the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ be ever on my mind, on
my lips, and in my heart.
The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Give Me Jesus (ELW 770).
APOSTLES CREED
As they recite the creed, worshippers are invited to bow beginning with the
words born of the Virgin Mary, until the words he descended to the
dead.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On
the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the
right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us; God
calls us to receive forgiveness through Christ, to turn from sin, to be
reconciled to God, and to live in peace with others. As a called and
ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore
declare to: God entirely forgives all of your sins. In the name of the Father,
and of the (+)Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Please stand and greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

In the course of the silence after each bidding, the people offer their own
prayers, either silently or aloud.

PEACE
Reconciled to God through Christ, let us reconcile with one another. The
peace of the Lord be with you always.
And also with you.

I ask your prayers for God's people throughout the world; for our
Bishop(s) Elizabeth and Suzanne; for this gathering; and for all ministers
and people. Pray that all the baptized will be faithful servants of Christs
mission.

OFFERTORY HYMN: As the Grains of Wheat (ELW 465)

PREFACE
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Worshippers are invited to bow through to the words Hosanna in the
highest!

OFFERING PRAYER
God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures
forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine.
Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your
gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lords body
and blood, each time the words Do this for the remembrance of me, are
spoken.
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In
great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick
and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross,
opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await
his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and
unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of
Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor
and glory, now and forever.
Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as our loving parent as we
pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
FRACTURE AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Come to the banquet, for all is now ready.
All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.

Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Wednesday, September 21, 2016
Matthew (or Levi) was a tax collector in Capernaum for the Roman
government. Tax collectors were frequently despised for dishonesty and for
assisting the occupiers. Jesus nevertheless showed love for them, and chose
Matthew to be a disciple.
