INTRODUCTION;
The current state of our environment is not really pleasant to be proud of ourselves.
Various features of our planet have proven to us that the environmental situation is not satisfying.
Because of the unsustainable use of scarce resources and mainly because of human activities,
many environmental problems such as deforestation, global warming, pollution and ozone layer
depletion has risen. The illegal cutting down of trees in forest without replanting , overexploitation
of natural resources(fish), increase industrialization have all led human beings to be faced with
deforestation(degradation of the ecosystem),global warming(increase in world temperature),
pollution(emission of carbon- dioxide to the atmosphere ) etc. All these environmental problems
have led to the scarcity of the major ingredient for human survival and business activities for
example textile industries which is water. Again beside water scarcity, dry land areas have
massively increased worldwide. The diagram below shows the coverage of dry land worldwide
(Green Facts, 20101).
.
With the increasing population worldwide, deforestation and
pollution how companies effectively meet up with the demand and at what price could will it be
done?. In order to answer these growing population that may be severely
affected by these
environmental dilemma, socially responsible industries such as IKEA and International paper
company have taken up the challenge. By providing environmental friendly goods and most
important participating through their activities in creating a better tomorrow, International paper
and IKEA have develop various strategies in order to meet up with the expectation of the

president
Michael Ohlson, IKEA through its products provided has proven to be a socially
On the other side they are various arguments which suggest that
these companies dont have to carry out environmentally friendly activities. Some of the reason
push forward is discussed below;
Carrying out recycling of waste products into useable forms requires
various machines and is very costly to provide recycling activity in an organization for example
recycling only a tone of waste product requires 1000KW of electricity.
Because conserving natural resources especially the forest requires
constant attention and always replanting trees, it is time consuming and requires huge efforts from
the organization for example IKEA working with the Alliance rainforest in china provide training
session and guidelines to forestry caretaker in china on how to effectively manage their forest.
(Green facts, 201013 )
With all the green initiatives undertaken by IKEA Company, one
problem still persists that of cost of production. This problem arises because the cost of producing
environmentally friendly products such as sparsam bulb and pave table are very expensive and an
increase in cost of production will automatically lead to increase in prices which may not be
affordable for most customers.
From the green initiatives shown by IKEA Company, we realize that
there is little or no government support. An ethical government doesnt only have to increase taxes
on goods and services provided by these companies, increase trade barriers but have to provide
support to these companies for example by reducing taxes on companies who provide
environmental friendly products.
It is not only left to IKEA Company to be socially responsible. Car
industries which are the main pollutants have to take the initiatives of producing more affordable
car that uses renewable energies.
When we take a general view of the company IKEA we may think that
the working conditions in this company may be good because of the performance of the
employees but that is not the case for example IKEA company was accused of exploitative child

Founded on January 31, 1898 after the merger of 17 paper
and pulp mills in the United States, the company is the world leading producer of paper, packaging
and forest products. Having its headquarter in Memphis, Tennessee, United states, the company
employs 51,500 employees and owns 33 million acres of forest worldwide. Been the world largest

sustainably managing its forest, the company have embrace many partnership with nonprofit
organization such as the forest stewardship council, sustainable forest initiative and the PEPC
which together have work together in sustainably conserving the forest and making sure that the
company follows defined standards regarding forest exploitation.(Green facts, 201018)
International paper conscious of the level of fresh water scarcity, massive
death of aquatic species due to global warnings, as a responsible company the company signed the
first ever aquatic resources conservation and management partnership agreements with other
organizations. The aim of these agreements is to increase freshwater ecosystems, help recover
foundation, whose primary aim is to provide environment education, community needs and
reduce literacy level in areas where the company operate. Been aware that companies emission of
gas to the atmosphere greatly contribute to global warming (increase level of desert land and
poverty) especially in Africa, international paper created the Coins for Kids program whos aim
is to provide education and meals in nursery and primary schools in regions greatly affected by
global warming, increase desert land and water scarcity especially in Kenya, Ethiopia and most
sahelians countries water.
As a socially responsible company international paper make sure that all its
wood sources come from certified and approved forest through in industries in Europe, north and
south America. For example international paper company in France and Russia (saillat and
svetogorsk) all uses wood from local forest that are certified and approved by the governments and
Forest stewardship council.(Green facts, 201022)
Conscious of the alarming level of global warming and its impact
in the future, international company developed various steps in reducing it environmental
footprints for example the company have voluntary participated in greenhouse gas trading
program in the U.S and Europe such as the Chicago climate exchange and the European unions
carbon trading system programs whose aim are to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 15 percent
between 2000 and 2010. Furthermore the company have invested 180millions dollars since 2003
to steadily reduce the company use of fossil fuels( good pollutants),increase the use of bio-energy
Because in the past the company used to produce plastics packaging for
CD
and were not biodegradable, the company made an alternative to this package by
manufacturing the paper foam package which by not just being lighter and easily transportable
but it is also renewable and biodegradable. For example with this product, Universal music
enterprise (American company) uses it to package millions of its R&B CDs collection worldwide.
(Green facts, 201024)
Paper one of the most used products worldwide by schools, industries,
offices newspapers etc were often burned or dumped by these various groups. During a research it
was found that only offices and schools in the United States used and dumped million of tons of
papers daily. Since not all of these papers were biodegradable, Intentional paper as a leading
paper manufacturer
containerboard mills board and specialized employees who collected tons of papers daily , brought
to their own plants and with the recycling facilities, the company recycled these papers . At the
end of the recycling process new papers from the recycled ones are obtained and later on sold back
to customers. (Green facts, 201025)

On the other side various argument against may be raised against all
the green initiatives undertaken by the company. Some of the arguments against are discussed
below;
Genetically engineered Arborgen trees may be an ecological
disaster, bringing increase in fire risk and during hurricanes season their pollen grains may be
spread to natural forest causing increase in water consumption in these areas and because
genetically modified foods or others often have an impact on health on the long-run, some people
may argue that going on with these trees on a long term will increase industries habits of forest
deforestations and what will happen in future if these trees are not under the company control?
Another question about these genetically modified trees is that why
that is the company has not measured the environmental impact of these trees before deciding to
grow it in the United States and china? Some people may argue that the company has used this
approach only to raise it sales and revenue.
It caused the company several million dollars in purchasing the
paints waste recycler and this machine uses thousand of kilowatts to run it processes which leads
to high cost of production and finally customers will have to suffer because of high price induced
on the products.
What is the government rule in all these initiatives? The
governments even if they provide regulation and standards to follow have to actively support all
green companies by giving to them subsidies, tax reductions etc. Governments have to show the
ways to individuals and companies the importance of taking care of our only environments which
every one depends. The governments role is not only to fail as they did in Copenhagen regarding
global decision on the environmental issues but have through their decision show the way to
follow.
This company uses thousands of tons of wood from the forest each
year in manufacturing its products which often requires thousands of forest acres to provide these

CONCLUSION
From the above story about the two companies we can conclude that in the
21st century in which we are going through, all companies large or small have to show concerns
for the environments by providing environmental preferred goods and services. From a strict point
of view what will happen to the growing population of the world if these environmental issues
such as global warming and most important water scarcity cant be solved? , what will be the
availability and price of water in the future? If these entire question cannot have an answer now it
will be very difficult for individuals and companies to go on with their business effectively so
action have to be taken now. Even though most government have not yet taken serious policies
concerning environmental
carrying out green initiatives because as ethical individuals it is our right to carter for our
environments and ourselves. Going on with green initiatives will be beneficial both for the
companies and the individuals as well in the sense that going on with green initiatives requires
various strategies, policies and recycling machines and for all these to operate effectively peoples
are needed. Finally this will create employment for the fast growing population and will create
more revenue for the company for example the Nike and Starbruck policies proposed to the
American federal government if legislated was to create about 26000 jobs in Oregon in the united
states hence increasing the household
because customers will spend more on the products. Another great advantage of companies been
socially responsible is that when ethical customers are aware of their companies engagement in
creating environmental products they have no fear in purchasing their products and this create a
strong reputation for the companies leading to increase in sales for example the American
magazine fortune designated International paper company as the Americans most admired
company in 2009 due to its very great green initiatives. On the side can company and individuals
totally turn away from using natural resources for their activities? IF the answer is no it means so
far we are on this planet we will always need primary natural resources for the survival of
individuals and company. Again so far as consumerism habits still persist and increase
