USING ICDCD FOR LEARNINGSIMILAR

FRACTIONS IN GRADE IV-JUPITER

Crisaldo Marin Pontino, Teacher III
Sixto Babao Elem. School, Tibungco District, Davao City

ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to come up with profiles of improvised compact disc case device
(ICDCD) and learning similar fractions: and determine if a significant relationship between these
two variables exists. This study made use of the descriptive and correlation method, and 49
pupils of Grade IV-Jupite in Sixto Babao Elementary School, Tibungco District were the
respondents. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The finding of the
study is that, the ICDCD showed significant correlation with pupils learning similar fractions in
mathematics.

INTRODUCTION
Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many
fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social
sciences. In the United States, from kindergarten through high school, the
mathematics education in public schools has historically varied widely from state
to state, and often even varies considerably within individual states. With the
recent adoption of the Common Core Standards by 45 states, mathematics
content across the country is moving into closer agreement for each grade level
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics_education_in_the_United_States).
The Philippine Council of Mathematics Teacher Educators (MATHTED), Inc.,
has vision which provides leadership in improving the quality of mathematics
teacher education, and facilitate the exchange of information about current
research work and teaching methods among mathematics teacher educators
(mathed.weekly.com).
In Davao City, MTAP-DepEd Saturday Programs in Mathematics is always
conducted every year with aim to provide the pupils the opportunity to explore
mathematics. In Sixto Babao Elem. School, Tibungco District, teachers are
trained in different math events like rubiks cube, sci-dama, sudoku, math raps
and developing strategic intervention materials (SIM) for all grade levels. Every
classroom has been required to have a numeracy corner for the pupils.

Grade IV-Jupiter has a so called ICDCD which stands as Improvised

Compact Discs Case Device. Compact disc is one of the visual resources types
of instructional materials (Leus, 2002). A jewel CD case is a compact case that
has been used since the compact disc was first released in 1982. ICDCD is a
kind of instructional material prepared personally by a teacher and used in
teaching and learning mathematics especially in similar fraction in Grade IVJupiter in Sixto Babao Elem. School. Fraction is one of the least learned
competencies in mathematics. Similar fractions are fractions that have the same
denominators.
Instructional devices cannot teach by themselves, they need skillful
teaching to make them effective. In selecting materials, consider their
appropriateness and effectiveness, availability, appeal, cost and try it before
using. To arouse and sustain students interest and to give all students in a class
the opportunity to share experiences necessary for new learning are the values
and
importance
of
instructional
materials.

Today and into the future, mathematics has a dynamic application in many
areas of science and finance such as computing, biology, communications and
environmental science (courses.mq.edu.au/international).
In view of the foregoing developments, the researchers were prompted to
find out if using ICDCD in teaching helps improve the learning on similar fractions
in mathematics of the pupils, thus this study. Teachers will be apprised of the
academic strengths and weaknesses of their pupils. With the results, they will
come to know how much more effort should be exerted in order for the pupils to
achieve academic excellence.
METHOD
This study made use of the descriptive and correlation methods. This
method was used in describing ICDCD and learning similar fractions of Grade IVJupiter Pupils of SBES. Correlation method was used to determine the
relationship between the pretest and post test scores. Data were taken from
results of the similar fractions test administered twice to the pupil-respondents.
The data collected were analyzed accordingly as needed. Standard deviation
and mean scores were used in data analysis.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Results of this study are presented and discussed in this part, which are the
analysis and the interpretation of data sequenced according to the order: pretest
scores, post test scores, paired sample test and effect size.

Moderate

Table 4 shows the Test of Effect size of ICDCD. It generated an ETA squared
value of 0.530 which signifies moderate effect, thus the ICDCD is effective in
improving the learning in similar fractions.
The result of the study corroborates with Leus (2002) that compact discs is
one of the visual resources types of instructional material, effective tool in the
improvement of pupils learning in similar fractions.

CONCLUSION
1. The pretest result on similar fractions is average.
2. The post test result on similar fractions is high.
3. There is a significant difference on the pretest and post test scores.
4. The ICDCD has moderate effect on the learning of similar fractions in
mathematics on pupils of Grade IV-Jupiter in Sixto Babao Elem. School.

RECOMMENDATION
Using ICDCD for learning similar fractions in mathematics of Grade IVJupiter pupils of SBES is recommended to be adopted by the teachers of Sixto
Babao Elementary School, Tibungco District, for School Year 2015-2016.
