Catalog Course Description:
Focus on reading proficiency and coordination of discourse skills for comprehension. Composition, visual literacy,
advanced vocabulary, analysis and critical reading are emphasized. Lecture 4 hours / 15-week term. 2 credits.
Course Objectives:
The course learning objectives are aligned with the weekly course teaching and learning goals and assignments.
The objectives will be evaluated through assignments, assessments, and other methods throughout the course.
Upon completion of this course, ESL 0252 students should be able to:
Use steps in the pre-reading process (preview, access prior knowledge, predict).
Identify main ideas and supporting details (stated or implied).
Demonstrate an increased understanding of level-appropriate academic vocabulary.
Use context clues to understand vocabulary.
Demonstrate comprehension of level-appropriate readings on a test.
Write about a reading by summarizing, paraphrasing, responding, quoting, and citing.
Draw inferences; understand referents.
Read critically - distinguish fact from opinion.
Understand idioms, metaphors, and figures of speech.
Use textbook reading techniques.
Recognize purpose, perspective, mood and tone.
Use proper MLA format.
Use a dictionary to understand parts of speech, pronunciation key, multiple meanings.
Demonstrate proficiency of the grammar in the 0252 curriculum.

The course has 17 assignments totaling 1570 points. Letter grades are awarded based on the total number of
points achieved. (Late assignments are not excepted unless prior approval is given by the instructor.
Extensions are given only for extreme conditions. 50% of the total points will be deducted from scores on
assignments received after the due date.)
