REWRITE: Colettes The Hand HW1 Fantastic 16

Please revise the in-class literary analysis that was handed back to you
in class.
To do so, pay careful attention to the grid and comments, noting for
example which of the four criteria posed the greatest difficulty to you.
You will be marked according to this same grid.
You are expected to write a complete five-paragraph, analytic essay,
improving upon your initial in-class literary analysis. The paper should
be word-processed in a standard 12-point font and submitted in PDF or
WORD (doc/docx) only and submitted into the Omnivox dropbox only
(eg, not attached to a MIO). It should include an introduction (which
should contain a clearly identifiable thesis and organizing statements),
three body paragraphs (logically constructed to advance your single,
overarching thesis to the paper, ideally divided into three devices or
sub-ideas to your major thesis, and with each paragraph including
quotations), and a conclusion (synthesizing your overarching thesis
argument). Make sure to avoid restrictive character description, plot
summary, and personal position pieces. Also make sure to mention
devices consistently and to analyze how the texts use of these devices
links to your proposed interpretation. You must adequately quote the
text, and your quotation integrations should be accurate.
All students are expected to submit their original, marked first
draft of the analysis in person (with the accompanying grid).
If you so desire, you may resubmit your assignment numerous times
up to the deadline; I will only mark the last submission. If you find
that you cannot submit the paper on time, remember that you have 1
week to submit for a late penalty.
Remember to keep the grid criteria on hand as you rewrite. For
example, if you had a restrictive thesis (limited, say, to character
description or summary), make sure that you fix your thesis to reflect a
clear interpretation of the storys general message. This kind of
revision applies to all major changes to the essay: your corrections
should not simply be cosmetic or superficial; they should be
substantial.
Finally, consult the documents in the course-pack on Constructing the
Essay, particularly on pp.13-16, for information on how to draft each
part of the essay. The document, Six Errors to Avoid, is also quite
helpful for reminders on quotation integration, title formation, and the
use of you and I in formal writing.

Again, the paper is due in the Omnivox dropbox no later than 11:59pm
Friday, Sept. 16. (Students have until Wednesday to submit their
original in-class analyses to the teacher if they do not submit in class
on Friday.)
Please contact the teacher by MIO or stop by A543 if you have any
questions!
