CHAPTER 1.

INTRODUCTION
A major initiative of sustainable businesses is to eliminate or decrease the environmental harm
caused by the production and consumption of their goods. The impact of such human activities in
terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced can be measured in units of carbon dioxide
and is referred to as the carbon footprint. The carbon footprint concept is derived from ecological
footprint analysis, which examines the ecological capacity required to support the consumption
of products.
Businesses take a wide range of green initiatives. One of the most common examples is the act of
"going paperless" or sending electronic correspondence in lieu of paper when possible. On a
higher level, examples of sustainable business practices include: refurbishing used products (e.g.,
tuning up lightly used commercial fitness equipment for resale); revising production processes in
order to eliminate waste (such as using a more accurate template to cut out designs); and
choosing nontoxic raw materials and processes. For example, Canadian farmers have found that
hemp is a sustainable alternative to rapeseed in their traditional crop rotation; hemp grown for
fiber or seed requires no pesticides or herbicides.
Sustainable business leaders also take into account the life cycle costs for the items they produce.
Input costs must be considered in regards to regulations, energy use, storage, and disposal.
Designing for the environment (DFE) is also an element of sustainable business. This process
enables users to consider the potential environmental impacts of a product and the process used
to make that product.
The many possibilities for adopting green practices have led to considerable pressure being put
upon

companies

from

consumers,

employees,

government

regulators

and

other

stakeholders. Some companies have resorted to green washing instead of making meaningful
changes, merely marketing their products in ways that suggest green practices. For example,
various producers in the bamboo fiber industry have been taken to court for advertising their
products as more "green" than they are.

TYPES OF GREEN MEASURES

The Embassy developed an Energy Saving Plan as a guideline for the implementation of the
Green Embassy Initiative. Based on the Energy Saving Plan, the embassy has implemented
numerous measures in order to live up to its commitments.
1. Code of Conduct: The Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines for sustainable staff behaviour
that hangs in all over the embassy. It reminds people to turn off the light and screen when
they leave office, turn off AC when not necessary, print on both sides, etc.
2. Energy saving mode: All printers, computers, screens, etc. are on energy saving mode.
3. Reduction of bulbs: Fluorescents / bulbs have been taken out of ceiling lamps in areas
where lamps are not necessary. Sometimes, only one fluorescent a ceiling lamp is enough to
provide sufficient amount of light. This measure has reduced the number of bulbs by almost
50 % and cut the electricity consumption significantly.
4. LED bulbs: All bulbs at the embassy are replaced with LED bulbs. It reduces the electricity
consumption from light with approx. 30 %. Moreover, LED bulbs last 50 times longer than
normal bulbs.
5. Multi adapters with a switch off button: All electronic equipment in all offices is
connected to a multi adapter which is switched off when people leave the office in the
evening. It has reduced the consumption of standby power significantly.
6.

7. New windows: The majority of the windows at the embassy have been replaced with double
glazed windows to reduce the use of AC.
8. Perlators: Perlators are mounted on all tabs. A perlator mixes water with air and reduces the
water consumption by approx. 25 %.
9. Korea ECO Label: To the extent possible, all cleaning products purchased are labelled with
the Korea ECO Label that guarantees that the products are environmental friendly.
10. Separation of garbage: This is not a measure that the embassy has initiated. All garbage
from the embassy is separated by the management of the building in order to secure the most
environmental friendly destruction and recycling. As of October 2011, the Embassy is now
focusing not only on energy reductions, but also on sustainability. Therefore we have had low
energy consuming hand dryers installed in the bathrooms to save the paper towels.

24

Initiatives taken by reliance for environment

Reliance Power strives to preserve and uphold natural resources and reduce the environmental
impact of its products and services throughout their lifecycle in order to be a responsible
corporate citizen
The guiding principle for our environmental initiatives is the 5 Rs:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renew and Respect.
The imperative is to use natural resources efficiently to leave a minimal carbon footprint and
impact on biodiversity. Reliance Power strives to develop and promote processes and newer
technologies to make all our products and services environmentally responsible. Employees, the
supply chain and other stakeholders are sensitized through personal interactions and other
channels of effective communication. Initiatives can be measured through resource savings in all
cases. The company aims to engage with government and non-government agencies to promote
conservation.

25

Strategies are in place for sustainable township development in various sites of Reliance Power
by designing structures with minimum disturbance to the topography and ecology. The various
steps towards building an eco-friendly composition are:

In the township phase I of all sites, the construction, hostel and housing blocks modified
to accommodate and preserve existing big trees.

Rainwater harvesting has been made mandatory for all sites.

Solar heating for public buildings

Use of energy efficient building material

Minimum day lighting arrangements for over 75% of the area

Energy efficient electric fixtures within minimum 3 star BEE rating

Water efficient plumbing fixtures

Use of lead free paints

Treatment of sewage water and reuse for landscape and irrigation purposes

26

Uses of Green Technology

Reliance Power believes in using the best technology for all its businesses to lessen the
environmental impact. The company would be using super-critical technology and ultra-super
critical technology that enables better combustion of coal and thereby reducing the emission
levels apart from the Flue Gas-De-sulphurisation plant that reduces sculpture dioxide emissions
in flue gas. For some sites of Reliance Power, we would be using imported coal with low ash
content. Moreover to limit ground level concentration of pollutants, the chimneys are being made
taller at all our plant sites.
Apart from using major breakthrough technologies and initiatives, Reliance Power has been very
keen on ensuring optimum utilization of the resources.
Of the 4000 acres of the land available with the company towards building of the power plant,
we are striving to build our plants within minimum possible use of land using compact designs
and creating more capacity within the existing sites. The rest of the land resource is utilized for
strengthening the green belt around the plants. We therefore ensure that we are building a power
plant in a forest. Water being another of the precious natural resource, Reliance Power
endeavors that in all our plant sites the design and the technology will use only minimum
required amount of water and further employ 100 per cent recycling too.
The company is also involved in implementing green steps like the fly-ash collected from the
plants which is further recycled for use by using it in manufacture of concrete bricks. Events and
days of ecological importance are celebrated to raise awareness for conservation of natural
resource. Environmental sanitation with special emphasis on solid waste management, waste
segregation and vermin-composting is practiced at site locations.

29

INDIA RELIANCE OPENS THE DOOR TO GREEN COMMUNICATIONS

The emission of CO2 is widely held to be the dominant cause of global warming and the
resulting environmental degradation. Moreover, the communications industry is guilty of leaving
one of the largest carbon footprints, a fact which has prompted supply chain stakeholders to seek
proactive ways to save energy and reduce the industry's eco impact. India is credited with leading
the drive to promote a low carbon economy and its leading mobile operator, Reliance, is stepping
up its efforts to open the door to green communications.
As the world's second most populous country with approximately 1,13 billion inhabitants, India
has enjoyed prosperous economic growth and social development. Like other developing
countries, though, it is facing enormous environmental problems. Its thermal power industry, for
instance, is a huge generator of carbon. From 1992 to 2002, the atmospheric concentrations of
CO2 in India jumped from 280 ppm to 390 ppm due to a CO2 emission increase of 57%. India is
becoming warmer, and its temperature rises are rapidly catalyzing soil degradation, water
pollution, and flooding. Energy conservation and emission reductions are urgently required to
mitigate further environmental destruction, and to guard against catastrophes such as the 2008
Bihar floods, which displaced around 3 million people.
To fulfill its social responsibility and promote its eco-agenda, Reliance constructed its green
radio access network (RAN) using eco-friendly GSM solutions to provide economically and
environmentally sustainable services for 55 million mobile subscribers across 20,000 towns and
450,000 villages.

30

CDMA/GSM co-location for emission reductions

India's vast territory is experiencing the early phase of urbanization, and this is of course
accompanied by a surge in communications needs. A new mobile network requires a large
number of outdoor equipment rooms to ensure wide coverage. However, research reveals that
producing materials for equipment room construction such as cement and tiles creates 65% of the
total CO2 emissions in one site, as illustrated in Fig. 1 (see PDF). Although no CO2 is generated
when these materials are used, the large amount of energy required forms a hidden source of
energy consumption.
Cutting these invisible CO2 emissions effectively necessitates a reduction in the number of new
sites and equipment rooms, which can be achieved by reusing old equipment rooms. However,
traditional GSM equipment features low integration and occupies large space. At Reliance's
existing CDMA sites, the available space in most equipment rooms was insufficient to house
traditional GSM equipment, which in turn requires new sites. However, a project that involves
tens of thousands of equipment rooms would have an obvious and extremely detrimental impact
on the environment.

31

Reliance's eco-commitment led it to select Huawei's new generation, highly integrated

green GSM BTS after comparison with other vendor's solutions. Outshining the competition with
its remarkably low carbon emissions and construction costs, Huawei's future-oriented BTS
facilitates an S4/4/4 site by using single cabinet that occupies less than half a square meter. The
lightness of the BTS negates the need for large mounting facilities and reduces the number of
construction personnel, and its compact dimensions reserve space for future expansion that can
support 18 GSM/UMTS carriers.
In large cities such as Bombay and Delhi, Reliance has significantly curtailed its construction
costs by co-positioning its GSM and CDMA networks to share auxiliary devices such as
antennas, feeders, and power supplies. Hardware expansion can be realized through software
without expanding the site, which further reduces invisible CO2 emissions. As the basis for
Reliance's green RAN, the Huawei GSM BTS effectively reduces energy consumption and
emissions, saves space, and is highly adaptable. These advantages have prompted Reliance to
consider sharing its site resources with other operators so as to not only minimize its own carbon
footprint, but also that of other operators.

32

Electricity management for energy conservation

India has faced power shortages and over-priced electricity for years, which is exacerbated by
rising gas and coal prices. Not only have electricity prices soared, but old equipment reduces the
efficiency of generating and using electricity, with the transmission loss rate in New Delhi, for
example, reaching 50%. Thus, power savings through efficient BTSs not only reduce CO2
emissions, but also minimize the exorbitant energy-based OPEX incurred by operators.
The green Huawei GSM BTS selected by Reliance features an intelligent electricity manager,
which employs Huawei's power amplification (PA) technology to enhance efficiency by 50% and
cut BTS power consumption by over 60%, while giving the same coverage. Its intelligent power
control technology can either shut down idle carrier modules or disable part of a given carrier's
time slots to reduce transmission energy when traffic is low. In India, the average traffic volume
from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. is equal to just a tenth of daytime peak hour traffic. By using the
above technologies, most BTSs can cut power consumption by a third during non-peak times and
still maintain high Qis.

33

Smooth evolution to a green 3G network

Reliance's 2G services have been enormously successful, and have imbued the company with the
confidence to develop 3G services. Reliance expects its 3G network to form an energy-saving
platform that integrates multiple data services, including multi-media entertainment and remote
medical care, monitoring, and education.
Huawei's future-oriented GSM solution can smoothly upgrade Reliance's GSM network
to UMTS. The space reserved by the Huawei GSM BTS can house Huawei's 3G UMTS RF
module and baseband processing unit without changing the BTS, and without necessitating large
scale, complex upgrades. A simple upgrade can support UMTS S2/2/2, and one cabinet can
operate 2G and 3G networks in parallel.
The GSMA CEO, Rob Conway, pointed out that operators should benefit more people while
minimizing their own environmental impact. With the dedicated support of Huawei, Reliance has
constructed a high-quality green RAN, which helps Indian people exchange information anytime
and anywhere. It saves resources, reduces the communications carbon footprint, and protects the
environment. The door to green communications is now open, and Reliance's green RAN marks
a milestone in the development of mobile communications.

3. AMUL

Amul is an Indian dairy cooperative, based at Anand in the state of Gujarat, India.
Formed in 1946, it is a brand managed by a cooperative body, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk
Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), which today is jointly owned by 3.6 million milk
producers in Gujarat.
Amul spurred India's White Revolution, which made the country the world's largest producer of
milk and milk products. In the process Amul became the largest food brand in India and has
ventured into markets overseas.
Dr. Verghese Kurien, founder-chairman of the GCMMF for more than 30 years (19732006), is
credited with the success of Amul.

35

GREEN GUJARAT TREE PLANTATION CAMPAIGN BY MILK

PRODUCERS OF DAIRY COOPERATIVES
Amul Coops plant more than 592.1 lakhs trees

Milk Producer members of Gujarat Dairy Cooperatives- better known as AMUL have been
celebrating the nation's Independence Day in a novel manner by planting lakhs of saplings across
Gujarat and have taken up an ambitious plan to save the environment by planting trees, making
India green and thereby reducing the effects of global warming. The milk producers of Gujarat
Dairy Cooperatives are conducting mass tree plantation drive every year on Independence Day
for last nine years. In last nine years (2007 to 2015) the milk producers have planted around
592.1 lakhs trees). The most striking feature of these entire programmes was that it has been
initiated by milk producer members of the dairy cooperatives. The unique fact about the
programme was that the milk producer members took up the oath to protect tree saplings till it
survives and grows into tree.

36

37

Over the years, due to intensive agriculture and dairying various natural resources are getting
consumed at faster pace in Gujarat state of India. The state level apex body of dairy farmers in
Gujarat gave a serious thought in this direction and discovered a novel idea for giving back to
nature. The idea was "one member one tree" plantation on our 60th Independence day - 15th
August 2007.To put this idea in to the practice a design team constituting of representatives of
member unions were formed. The team accepted the idea by heart and immediately decided to
spread it among farmer members of village dairy cooperative societies. Then the idea was
communicated to farmer members and they all welcomed it and enthusiastically agreed to
implement the idea.
For smooth implementation of the idea, the design team chalked out the road map for various
activities. Execution teams were formed at district union level to give final shape and put the
plan in action. Village level coordinators were identified and they were trained to streamline
activity of tree plantation. Various awareness materials were prepared. Through various
communication media farmer members were made aware of benefits of tree plantation and tree
plantation activity schedule.

38

The entire plantation activity was coordinated at all the three tiers of Anand pattern - at village,
district and state level dairy cooperatives. On 15th August, 2007, after the flag hoisting
ceremony, each member took an oath to plant saplings and ensure that they grew in to trees. Then
individually they planted sapling on their own at their identified locations like their farm, near
their home, on Farm bunds, etc. They have taken necessary care to ensure that this sapling
survives and they also reported regarding the survival to village level coordinator and district
milk unions after five months. In this way, 18.9 lakh trees were planted on 15th August 2007.
This was just the beginning. Henceforth, the Village Dairy Cooperative Societies of Gujarat as a
mark of respect for our nation decided to conduct such event on every Independence Day and
accepted 15th August (Independence Day) as a "Green Revolution Day by Afforestation to
Protect Mother Earth from Pollution, Climate change and Global Warming"..

39

But all this required immaculate planning and execution. An action plan of tree plantation
programme was drawn up months back in advance. After the identification of the chief
coordinator for each district milk union, the organization of a task force for the programme was
put in place. Roles and responsibilities were assigned to each member and area of operation
allocated. After preparing the overall action plan, each union issued a circular to the Dairy
Cooperative Societies regarding the programme and arranged meetings with the societies
covered. At the village level, coordinators were identified in respect of the villages to be covered
and the number of saplings required. Along with logistical arrangements direct contact was
established with different agencies for receipt of saplings.First tree plantation programme (15th August, 2007) was carried out on "one member, One tree"
basis. Second tree plantation programme (15th August, 2008) in which around 52.74 lakhs tree
were planted was conducted on "one member three tree" basis.
In year 2009 and in year 2010, in mass tree plantation programme around 84.24 and 83.5 lakhs
tree saplings were planted respectively. The programme was conducted on "One member, five
tree" basis. Further, this year 2011 around 72.6 lakhs trees were planted, the programme was
carried out as per the same process and procedures followed in previous year.
There from, in last nine years, milk producers of GCMMF planted around 592.1 lakhs tree
saplings in 28 districts of Gujarat. By doing so, milk producers of Gujarat Dairy Cooperatives
have shown their concern, awareness and commitment for betterment of environment.

Achievements:
"Amul Green" movement has also been awarded by International Dairy Federation for best
environment initiative in the "sustainability category" during the 4th Global Dairy Conference
held at Salzburg Congress Center, Austria on 28th April, 2010.

"Amul Green" movement has also been awarded by prestigious Green Globe Foundation
Award-2012
Further, Amul Green movement has also been awarded by prestigious prestigious Green Idol
Award under Special Jury Award category by Dainik Bhaskar Group.

This effort to provide green cover to the earth was also acknowledged when the state level apex
body of Gujarat Dairy Cooperatives - GCMMF received seven successive prestigious
"SRISHTI's G-Cube Award"-2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 for Good Green
Governance in the "Service Category".

42

In the year 2014, Amul green movement was honored with the Hercules Category Award by
Gujarat Innovation Society.

It has been estimated that when one tree is cut, in monetary terms there is loss or Rs. 33 lakhs
(Oxygen worth of Rs. 5.3 lakhs, Land Fertility of Rs. 6.4 lakhs, Rs. 10.5 lakh for reduction of
pollution of atmosphere and Rs. 5.3 lakh towards Flowers / Fruits and habitation to birds animals). But the benefits that accrue to mankind when a tree is planted cannot be measured in
money and is priceless.
The producer members of GCMMF have really set an example for all the cooperatives and other
institutions to turn India green in the era of Global warming and environmental crisis.
When 3.5 million dairy farmers of Gujarat have planted 592.1 lakh trees in just eight years and
are planning to plant more trees every year, they are doing an invaluable - truly Amul - service to
the society.
In an era of global warming, Amul is contributing its share in making Gujarat lush green. In this
way, the milk producers of Gujarat are ushering in a silent revolution of greening Gujarat.

4. HINDUSTAN UNILIVER
Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) is an Indian consumer goods company based in Mumbai,
Maharashtra. It is owned by Anglo-Dutch Company Unilever which owns a 67% controlling
share in HUL as of March 2015 and is the holding company of HUL. HUL's products include
foods, beverages, cleaning agents, personal care products and water purifiers.
HUL was established in 1933 as Lever Brothers and, in 1956, became known as Hindustan Lever
Limited, as a result of a merger between Lever Brothers, Hindustan Vanaspati Mfg. Co. Ltd. and
United Traders Ltd. It is headquartered in Mumbai, India and employs over 16,000
workers, whilst also indirectly helping to facilitate the employment of over 65,000 people. The
company was renamed in June 2007 as "Hindustan Unilever Limited".
Hindustan Unilever's distribution covers over 2 million retail outlets across India directly and its
products are available in over 6.4 million outlets in the country. As per Nielsen market research
data, two out of three Indians use HUL products.

44

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) recently broadcasted the commencement

of Swachh Aadat, Swachh Bharat programme parallel to the Governments
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) to encourage good health and
hygiene practices.
In this digital campaign initiated by Hindustan Unilever, Haath (hand) signifies to wash your
hands five times a day with soap, Munh (mouth) to adopt safe drinking water practices and Bum
to use a toilet to defecate and keep it hygienic.
Haath, Munh Aur Bum, Bimari Hogi Kum may sound a tad bit gibberish. But the campaign
stands for three simple healthy habits that can go a long way in preventing poor health.
HUL claims it has touched 120 million in India, including 63 million through the Lifebuoy
handwashing campaign, 56 million through Pureits safe drinking water and constructing over
3,000 toilets through Domex Toilet Academy.

45

46

Execution
HUL launched a digital campaign on YouTube showcasing children pointing at the necessity to
cleanse hands, defecate in sanitary toilets and drink clean water. The campaign highlights three
brands from Hindustan Unilever Domex, Lifebuoy, and Pureit.
The campaign believes that embracing sanitary habits is as essential as development of hygiene
infrastructure to realize the Clean India Mission.
Previously, Lifebuoy, had rolled out a campaign with the aim to reduce diseases like diarrhea and
pneumonia and raise awareness about the importance of hand-washing.
The YouTube channel Help a Child Reach 5 invited people to make a pledge and redirected it to
the Facebook app. #HelpAChildReach5 was the hash tag used for promotion of the campaign.
Though the campaign focused on raising awareness on the importance of hand washing, the
Facebook app did not emphasize on hand washing habits, but only consisted of a pledge button
and the ad-film.
Haath Munh aur Bum campaign, however, in the most simplistic way manages to touch the issue
in a video of just 2 minutes.
This jolly video with a catchy jingle aims to bring a behavioral change in people through
children. The motive of this campaign was especially to reach the slum population from Mumbai
and Delhi.

47

Results
The campaign was a simple and uncomplicated to remember, and the catchy tag line of Haath,
Muh, Bum and the fact that children are trying to inculcate good habits in adults turned out to
be the stars of the campaign.
Globally, brands and organizations have realized the importance of hash tag and the culture is
undoubtedly ruling all social media giants. HUL however, did not encourage a hash tag initiative
to create buzz on every social media platform, but, ran the campaign on YouTube the traditional
way by simply using a tagline.

CHAPTER 4. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION

A Green Business Starts with Small Steps Environmentally friendly actions don't have to be large
to have an impact. Consistently reducing the amount of energy, water, and paper our businesses
use can make a huge difference, both to the environment and to our pocketbooks. How much
paper would you save over the course of a year, for instance, if you always ran double-sided
copies? A small easy way to go green-but a big result!
GO GREEN BY:
1. Turning off equipment when it's not being used.
2. Encouraging communications by email, and reading email messages onscreen.
3. Reducing fax-related paper waste by using a fax-modem and by using a fax
coversheet only when necessary.
4. Producing double-sided documents whenever possible.
5. Not leaving taps dripping.
6. Installing displacement toilet dams in toilet reservoirs. Placing one or two
plastic containers filled with stones (not bricks) in the toilet's reservoir will displace about 4
litres of water per flush-a huge reduction of water use over the course of a year.
7. Finding a supply of paper with maximum available recycled content.
8. Choosing suppliers who take back packaging for reuse.
9. Instigating an ongoing search for "greener" products and services in the local
community. The further your supplies or service providers have to travel, the more energy
will be used to get them to you.
10. Before deciding whether you need to purchase new office furniture, see if your existing
office furniture can be refurbished. It's less expensive than buying new and better for the
environment.

49

Although it may seem like recycling is a sustainable waste management program, it can be
costly. Source reduction, reuse, and more efficient use of everyday office staples like water
bottles and paper can have a greater impact on the environment without driving up operating
costs. Within your company, you may want to look into setting up a Waste Management Team
that will focus on one area of the sustainable waste management program at a time. This could be
setting different goals to hit every week/month/year to help reduce the carbon footprint of the
company.
A few easy ways to start include the following:
Invest in a water cooler and encourage the use of reusable water bottles by employees. Use
electronic files whenever possible, print double-sided copies, and communicate via email rather
than printed memos. Set up a three-stream waste system that sorts waste into recycling, compost
(i.e., food), and trash.
Attracting New Customers
One thing now that potential new customers are looking at more and more is how a business
takes responsibility for its impact on the environment. Enhancing the corporate responsibility of
your business is one of the best ways to grow it, and establishing and maintaining a reputation as
a business with environmentally friendly practices and a commitment to environmental
sustainability is a proven way to elevate your profile. Thousands of businesses round the world
that are finding if they implement environmental practices they get more new customers, which
naturally will increase the worth and profit of the business.

50

A Healthier Working Environment

A healthier and greener working environment can help to improve your company output and the
morale of your workforce. Heres a short list of things you can do to get started:
Experiment with this, but try using your air conditioning sparingly. Remember your employees
need to be comfortable in their jobs.
Keep the use of lights in the office to a minimum. Ensure theyre turned off every night and over
the weekend.
Buy energy- saving light bulbs. If you cant avoid having the lights on in the office, you mayas
well save what you can while using them.
Buy energy-efficient appliances. It may seem obvious, and it may mean spending a little more on
certain items, but in the long run it will reduce your outgoing expenses.
Encourage employees to car share or to bike to work. The more people you have sharing cars, the
more money they'll save while also doing their bit for the environment.
Sustainability
One of the greater values of a company's going green is the benefit to the environment. Making
the most of sustainable methods can help to prevent the waste of natural resources within the
business. This will only reduce the risk of depletion of these resources in the long term. Going
green at work can be as easy as making sure lights are turned off when not in use or as involved
as installing alternative energy sources, like solar panels or wind turbines. Whatever it is that
your business decides to do to become sustainable, remember that source reduction and
efficiency will not only help to save the environment but can also benefit your workforce, reduce
your operating costs, and elevate your brand value.
