4. Why were Europeans interested in Asia? Merchants were making a fortune
from selling cinnamon, pepper, cloves and other spices. The Europeans then started
looking for a route that would bypass the Arab merchants so they could obtain the
items the desired.

5. What three large African kingdoms south of the Sahara flourished between
300 and 1600? Powerful kingdoms in Africa started to be noticed when they were

open to their natural resources. Ghana, Mali, and Songhai were all becoming the
powerful kingdoms of Africa.

Harry of Portugal was fascinated by the boundaries of the world. In 1420 he set up an
exploration on the southeastern tip of Portugal.

7. Where did the earliest Portuguese explorers sail? The earliest Portuguese
explorers sailed to the coast of West Africa. Then in 1497 Vasco De Gama and an Arab
pilot set sail in the Indian Ocean and he eventually found his way to India.

Asia? Spain had been looking into the trading success of neighboring Portugal. They
wanted to have a share of the Asian resources as well. Columbus on the other hand
needed a court to finance him for his own voyage to Asia. So after a few years passed
Spain and Columbus found their way to their goal.

9. List the major accomplishments of Vasco da Gama, Juan Ponce de Leon and
John Cabot.
Vasco de Gama: Following Portugals interest with Africa, Vasco de Gama took four
boats and an Arab pilot in the search of India. By doing so he also completed the
eastern route to Asia.
John Cabot: An Italian who was sent out to find a northern route to Asian for England.
He ended up landing on the present-day coast of Newfoundland. That became a basis
for Englands claims to North America.
Juan Ponce de Leon: Ponce de Leon made the first Spanish landing in North America.
He landed in what is now Florida in the year 1513. His exploration led to the first
Spanish settlement in what is now the United States.

10. What was the main reason the Spanish wanted to conquer the Aztec and
the Inca? Hernan Cortes came to the east coast with 500 hundred soldiers, a
couple of horses, and a few cannons. Though the Aztec emperor was
welcoming, Cortes took advantage of this and held the Emperor captive. The
Aztecs rebelled against the Spanish. When the Spanish were losing
reinforcements were called in and the Spanish obliterated the Aztec empire.
11. How did the Spanish colonial system of encomiendas affect Native
Americans? During the 1500s, the Spanish government made a conquistador,
and had the right to demand Native Americans to give taxes or labor.
12. What movement created religious rivalries in Europe that carried over into
exploration of the Americas? In Western Europe, people were dividing into
Catholics or Protestants. Some of the English settlements were made by
Protestants who wanted to practice their beliefs in peace.

6. Why did settlers choose a peninsula on which to build Jamestown? The
settlers chose to build Jamestown on a peninsula so they could defend
themselves in case of an attack.
7. Why did the Virginia Company create the House of Burgesses? The Virginia
Company let colonists have some say in their government. Ten different towns
selected two representatives called Burgesses. At the meeting area they all
created laws for the entire colony.
8. How did the Puritans and the Pilgrims view of the Anglican Church differ?
The Puritans and Separatists both disliked the way the Anglican Church
worked. But puritans only wanted to change the way he church ran while the
Separatists wanted to make their own church.

10. What is important about the year 1607? In the year 1607 Jamestown
became the very first permanent English colony.
11. Name two things that colonial leaders offered to attract settlers. Religious
freedom was a pick priority that most people wanted and that is one of the
things that the leaders offered to them. The other being that they could have
more land to attract the settlers.
12. What were Sir George Calverts two main reasons for establishing
Maryland? Calvert wanted to make a safe place for Catholics who were being
killed in England. By accomplishing this he also hope to make a fortune from it.
13. Why was there a high demand for slave labor in the Carolinas? African
Americans were very good at growing rice and it was also in popular demand.
As the demand for rice increased so did the demand in Salves.

The missionaries had wanted to convert Native Americans to Catholicism, but
they never tried to change the Indian customs.

Spain was determined to keep other European powers from threatening its
empire in America. Spain also wanted to control the area between French
territory and their colony in Mexico.
