An S-curve hydrograph is derived for a basin of 540 km2 from a 6 h unit hydrograph. The (5)
equilibrium discharge in the S-curve ism3/s
The peak ordinate of a 4 h unit hydrograph of a basin is 270 m3/s. Then, the peak ordinate of 8 h
unit hydrograph of the same basin will be.........................than 270 m3/s
The base period of a 6h unit hydrograph of a basin is 84 h. Then a 12h hydrograph derived from
this 6 h unit hydrograph will have a base period of..h
The 4 h unit hydrograph of a basin can be approximated as a triangle with a base period of 48 h
and a peak ordinate of 200 m3/s Then area of the basin is..km2
State the disadvantage of Construction of Levees method of flood control.

Obtain a Unit Hydrograph for a basin of 315 km2 of area using the rainfall and stream flow data
tabulated below. State its unit period.

(5)

Sketch a typical flow mass curve and explain how it could be used for the determination of

(5)

(a) the minimum storage needed to meet a constant demand

(b) the maximum constant maintainable demand from a given storage.
(5)
State assumptions of flood frequency studies. What do you understand by 75% dependable flood?
Data covering a period of 92 years for the river Ganga at Raiwala yielded the mean and standard
derivation of the annual flood series as 6437 and 2951 m3/s respectively. Using Gumbels method
estimate the flood discharge with a return period of 500 years.

A catchment area of 140 km2 received 120cm of rainfall in a year. At the outlet of the
catchment the flow in the stream draining the catchment was found to have an average
rate of 2.0 m3/s for 3 months, 3.0 m3/s for 6 months and 5.0 m3/s for 3 months.
(I)
What is the runoff coefficient of the catchment?
(II)
If the afforestation of the catchment reduces the runoff coefficient to 0.50, what
is the increase in the abstraction from precipitation due to infiltration,
evaporation and transpiration, for the same annual rainfall of 120 cm?
