Mega Trends
How is the world changing and
why will it change transport?
We are seeing a number of mega trends having an impact om the
design and provision of transport. Urbanisation and climate change
are the two key drivers that are having a huge impact on areas
such as public transport capacity and priority, fuel efficiency and
the increasing use of active travel modes
15 September 2016
What is IM?
A changing role for the public sector and private sector, with the public sector acting more as an
enabler, providing data and governance with the private sector responsible for the end to end
journey in infrastructure and service terms
User focused transport systems - to meet the needs of a connected world, an aging population,
demand for personalised services and those who do not own or have access to a private car
Integrated transport systems - to maximise and optimise the capacity of transport providing
seamless multi-modal journeys irrespective of network, mode, route or time
A split between providers of transport infrastructure, vehicles and hardware on the one hand and
managers and brokers of mobility services to the traveler on the other, with secure ITC systems,
software and smart applications as the interface between them
Efficient transport systems - to meet global resource demands including energy and fossil fuels
Sustainable transport systems - to address global social, environment and economic risks,
particularly climate and resilience, and link transport to community and public health goals.
It is the last bullet point that that could be the real driver for change and prove a disruptor of
established governance structures and business models
Our Approach
We have segmented our approach in to four growth themes:
Data Exploitation understanding how new technology can help us to collect, share and
analyse data to generate new insights and uses, and manage the transport system interactively
Roads of the Future at the forefront of how autonomous vehicles and smart road and transport
infrastructure will look and develop in the near and long-term future
Networks within scope include walking and cycling as active travel modes, alongside motorised
modes which will themselves become increasingly sustainable through smart design, automation,
electric power-trains and renewable energy sources.

Clear response and benefits for pressing transport challenges and wider policy goals such poor road safety,
acute urban congestion and air quality, as well as a range of resource and environmental risk factors
Data exploitation with capacity to collect, share, analyse and use large volumes of demand, condition and user
data through mobile communications more comprehensively and efficiently than traditional surveys and methods
Growing, young and tech-savvy populations already with high-levels of smart and mobile phone/device take-up
and proficiency in use, used and open to the deployment of new applications and associated services
Leapfrog technology with the capacity to invest and go from rudimentary to advanced ICT, infrastructure and
vehicle specifications in one step within a short period of time without the extensive lags, as well as the ability to learn
the lessons of mistakes, seen in Advanced Economies
Constraints on public sector funding with opportunities for technology to reduce infrastructure and other capital
investment requirements, streamline asset management, generate and collect new revenue streams, and for private
sector to offer transport services and brokering direct to users via PPP and a range of other business models
With appropriate technology applications (often at a basic level on KISS principles), proportionate regulation and flexible
governance arrangements, IM offers major potential for Emerging Economies with proof of concept, demonstration
projects and early deployment urgently needed to start developing an evidence base.
