ABSTRACT:
There may be a revolution underway in commercial plane production nowadays and it may be summed up in a single word: composites. To mitigate weight increases, aero engine manufacturers have replaced metal with composites. More than half of the total composite volume was directly associated with nacelle components, such as thrust reversers, acoustic liners, cascades, blocker doors, radial drive fairings and cowlings. Since composite material properties are often designed to be orthotropic or anisotropic, it is important to understand their behaviour, without which the designs may not perform as expected.
The aim of this thesis is to have an overview of composite materials and the potential of FEM tool MSC Nastran/ Patran and its capabilities to solve the composite ply laminates related problems which includes the linear static analysis of the model and to examine the behaviour of the material. Along with this we will understand the concept of failure indices, considering the theoretical approach obtained from text books and other research papers as reference, But the Main goal of the exercise is to perform in MSC. Patran/Nastran package the linear static analysis, Normal Modes and Direct Transient Response of the model of the Engine Fan Cowl and to examine the behaviour of the material in this paper we will learn about the Dynamic response of cowl due to sudden pressure increase. Materials used: Aluminium, Composite. The investigated laminated composite structure is constituted from Carbon Epoxy and core material. From the failure index test, Composite Fan Cowl structure has the maximum failure indices of the ply is 0.113 that means it is less than 1, hence the structure is completely in safe zone.
