1.2 Impact of the Upgrade

Before you upgrade an earlier version to the V200R005C00SPC500, read this section
carefully to understand the possible impacts of the upgrade on the system.

1.2.1 Impact on the System During an Upgrade

Impact on Services
The switch will restart during the upgrade and service will be interrupted.
NOTE

The service interruption time depends on many factors, such as the system software size, upgrade
method, operator's skill, and service configurations. The following service interruption time is for your
reference.

In the following examples, the switches are not configured and they are not in any stack.
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the serial interface, the service interruption time is as follows (the baudrate is
115200):

S5700: 50 minutes

S6700: 47 minutes

If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the network port (FTP mode), the service interruption time is as follows:

S5700: 6 minutes

S6700: 6 minutes

Upgrade Guide

1 Before You Start

If the switches are upgraded by using the command line, the service interruption time is as
follows:

S5700: 3 minutes

S6700: 3 minutes

Impact on Network Communication

When the system restarts, the communication between the switch and the NMS is interrupted.
The communication interruption time is the same as the service interruption time.

1.2.2 Impact on the System After Installation

There is no adverse impact on the system.

1.3 Cautionary Notes Before the Upgrade

No.

Description

When you upgrade the software using the command line, stack upgrade, or USB
flash drive, do not copy or delete files.

After the version is upgraded, ensure that the configuration is saved because a later
version is compatible with early versions but an early version is incompatible with
later versions. If the configuration is not saved, the configuration will be lost in the
case of version rollback.

If the loopback local swap-mac or loopback remote swap-mac command has

been used on an interface in a version earlier than V100R006 to configure MAC
swap loopback, run the start command in the interface view after the upgrade;
otherwise, the MAC swap loopback configuration will be invalid.

After the arp learning dhcp-trigger command is used on a VLANIF interface of

the DHCP relay agent in V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version, dynamic ARP
entries are generated only after DHCP snooping in the corresponding VLAN or on
the physical interface connected to users.

After a switch is upgraded from a version earlier than V100R006C00 to V200R005

with no configuration performed on the switch, some previously disabled alarms
are disabled. These alarms include basetrap, lldptrap, dldp, and loop-detection.

After a switch is upgraded from V100R003 or an earlier version to V200R005, the

default setting of the 802.1x handshake function changes from enabled to disabled.
After the upgrade, the 802.1x handshake configuration has no buildrun
information.

After a switch is upgraded from V100R002 or an earlier version to V200R005, the

value range and default value of the interval parameter in the mac-authen timer
guest-vlan reauthenticate-period command change. In earlier versions, the value
range of the interval parameter is 13600 and the default value is 30 (seconds). In
the new version, the value range is 603600 and the default value is 60 (seconds).
If the interval has been set to a value in the range of 159 seconds, the interval
changes to 60 seconds after the upgrade.

No.

Description

After a switch is upgraded from an earlier version to V200R001C01 or a later

version, the default aging time of ACLs used for ARP Miss suppression changes
from 50 seconds to 5 seconds.

After a switch is upgraded from a version earlier than V200R001C01 to

V200R005, the default setting of the icmp rate-limit enable command changes
from enabled to disabled. After the upgrade, the command has no buildrun
information.

10

After a switch is upgraded from an earlier version to V200R001 or a later version,

the default setting of the set flow-statistics include-interframe command
changes. In earlier versions, the traffic statistics collected on an Ethernet interface
do not include the inter-frame gap by default. In V200R001 the traffic statistics
collected on an Ethernet interface include the inter-frame gap by default.

11

If DAI is enabled on a VLAN and an interface belonging to the VLAN using the
arp anti-attack check user-bind enable command, V200R001 and later versions
use a different rule than that used in earlier versions to check ARP packets. In
earlier versions, an ARP packet is considered valid as long as the packet passes the
check on the interface. In V200R001 and later versions, an ARP packet is
considered valid only when the packet passes the check on the interface and
VLAN.

12

After the switch is upgraded from V200R001C01 to V200R005, the configuration

of the traffic rate statistics collection timer in traffic policies cannot be restored and
the timer value is reset to the default value 300s. In V200R002, run the traffic
statistics interval interval-time command to set this timer.

Description

13

After an S5700-LI or S5710-EI switch is upgraded from V200R001C00 to

V200R002 or a later version, its file system will expand from 64 MB to 200 MB. If
the system rolls back to V200R001C00, the BootROM will not be updated. It is
highly recommended that you back up important files before a degrade and limit
the size of the files within 61 MB (3 MB reserved for system software). If the size
of files exceeds 61 MB, the system backs up the files in the following order and
discards excess files:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Software package for next startup: Sys_StartupFlagRec_S.szCurSwtFile

Configuration file for next startup: Sys_StartupFlagRec_S.szCfgFile
Patch file for next startup: Sys_PatchUpdateFlagRec_S.szNextPatchFile
Patch state file: flash:/$_patchstate_reboot
flash:/ *.web.zip
flash:/private-data.txt
flash:/$_patch_history
flash:/serverkey (if any, used for SSH login)
flash:/hostkey (if any, used for SSH login)

10. flash:/resetinfo
11. flash:/syslogfile
The system displays "do not power off" during update of the file system. Do not
power off or restart the switch in this process. Otherwise, all data on the switch
will be lost. If the device is powered off due to incorrect operation or for other
reasons, upgrade the software to V200R003C00SPC300 through BootROM
according to 4.2 Upgrading a Switch to the V200R005C00SPC500 Using the
BootROM or contact Huawei technical support engineers.
14

To upgrade an S5700-LI or S5710-EI switch using the BootROM menu, upgrade

the BootROM to the latest version, download the latest software package, and
specify the software package for the next startup using the BootROM menu. To
roll back the system version of an S5700-LI or S5710-EI switch, specify the old
software packet for next startup while retaining the latest BootROM version.

15

If a switch has no management interface, enter the BIOS menu and use the first
electrical interface to transfer the software package to the switch. Errors may occur
if you use other interfaces to transfer the software package.

16

If an S5700-SI or S5700-LI switch has been configured with the maximum number
of ACL CPCAR entries and inbound rate limiting before it is upgraded to
V200R005, the ACL CPCAR configuration may be lost after the upgrade due to
insufficient resources for ACL CPCAR entries.

17

After the system is upgraded to V002R002C00 or a later version, the default

temperature alarm threshold and value range will change. If the temperature alarm
threshold configured in the old version is out of the value range in the new version,
the threshold will change to the default value after the upgrade.

Description

18

If the system version rolls back to an earlier version from V200R002 or a later
version, the stack configuration may be lost. When this occurs, the stack cannot be
set up. To set up a stack, reconfigure the stacking function and re-connect stack
cables if necessary.
For example, S5700LI V200R002 has two stack ports. If the two ports are used for
stacking, the stack cannot be set up after the system version rolls back to an earlier
version.

19

During BootROM update, the XMODEM protocol is transmitted at 128 bit/s. If the
size of a packet is not a multiple of 128 bits, the packet size increases. After the
stack reboots, configurations cannot be restored because the packet size changes. It
is recommended that you download the system software package through FTP or
TFTP.

20

After the software version is upgraded from V200R002C00 or an earlier version to

V200R002C00 or a later version, if the default web file web.7z is unavailable and
default configurations are used, the HTTP and HTTPS services cannot be enabled,
and the undo http sever enable and undo http secure-server
enable configurations are generated. To use the HTTP and HTTPS services, load
the web file again and run the http secure-server enable and http sever enable
commands.

21

V200R002C00SPC100 does not support HGMP. After the software is upgraded to

V200R002C00SPC100 or a later version, the HGMP configuration will be lost.

22

V200R005 supports a maximum of 30000 commands. If more than 30000

commands are executed, some commands may become invalid after software
upgrade.

23

During a software downgrade, if the system displays "Info: After the system
version is changed successfully, it can only be changed to V200R002 or later in
next version change.", do not change the version to V200R001 or an earlier
version. If the system displays "Error: The system cannot be downgraded to this
version. Please use V100R006 or a later version.", use V100R006 or a later
version.

24

After the trap function is enabled or disabled on V100R006C00, the snmp-agent

trap enable basetrap command is not supported. After the system software is
upgraded to V100R006C00 or a later version, the configuration of the snmp-agent
trap enable basetrap command will be lost. The trap function is not affected.

25

When the software version is downgraded to be earlier than V200R002, the

BootROM is not automatically upgraded. After the version is downgraded, it
cannot be upgraded again. This rule does not apply to S5700EI. The software
version of S5700SI cannot be downgraded from V200R002 to V100R006 or an
earlier version.

26

After the software version is downgraded or upgraded to any version through the
USB flash drive, index file verification may be failed. A formal patch must be
installed to solve this problem.

Description

27

Before upgrading or downgrading V200R002C00SPC100 to any version through

the USB flash drive, check whether a password has been set on the device using
the set device usb-deployment password XXXXXX command. If a password has
been set, add <usb-deployment password=XXXXXX;/> to the index file on the
USB flash drive for password authentication. The password in the index file is in
plain text, and cannot contain semicolons because semicolons are separators in the
index file. Authentication can be successful only when the password in the index
file is the same as that on the device. If no password is set on the device, the
password or field can be filled in the index file or not.

28

If the BFD negotiation timer is set to be shorter than 100 ms in V100R002, the
configuration becomes invalid after the version is upgraded to V200R003 or later.

39

After the software version is upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300, the tunnel

interface format is changed from Tunnel x/x/x to Tunnel x.

30

In V200R001C01, the range of NQA server port numbers is changed from 1-65535
to 7 and 1025-65535. Therefore, if the NQA server port number has been set to 1-6
or 8-1024 before the upgrade is performed, the configuration will be lost after the
upgrade.

31

After the software version is upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version,

the BIOS password set in the earlier version is still valid; however, it is
recommended that you change the password to ensure security.

32

After the software version is upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version,

the local account password set in the earlier version is still valid; however, it is
recommended that you change the password to ensure security.

33

If a physical stack port is not bound to a logical stack port before the upgrade, the
port restores to a service port after the version is upgraded to
V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version.

34

After V200R005 is downgraded to V200R001 or an earlier version, the stack

features on stack ports are disabled, and the stack ports must be reconfigured.

35

The qos queue statistics enable command is deleted from V200R003C00SPC300

and later versions. After the version is upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300, the
switch supports queue statistics by default.

36

After the version is upgraded to V200R003 or a later version, if the packets

discarded by IP source guard match a traffic policy in which the action is
mirroring, the traffic mirroring function does not take effect on the packets.

37

After the software version is upgraded to V200R003 or a later version, the default
settings and value ranges of rate limit on the management port are changed. If the
rate limit before the upgrade is beyond the value range allowed by V200R005, the
rate limit is changed to the maximum value in V200R005. If the rate limit before
the upgrade is the same as the default value in V200R005, the buildrun is deleted.

38

After the software version is upgraded to V200R003 or a later version, the default
settings and value ranges of cp-car total pps packets are changed. If the rate limit
before the upgrade is beyond the value range allowed by V200R003, the rate limit
is changed to the maximum value in V200R003. If the rate limit before the upgrade
is the same as the default value in V200R003, the buildrun is deleted.

Description

39

The software version is upgraded to V200R002 or a later version. If the ipv6

enable command has not been executed on the interface where dhcpv6 relay is
configured, the DHCPv6 relay configuration will be lost after the upgraded.

40

After the software version is upgraded to V200R001 or a later version, the local
user password may fail to restore. It is recommended that you upgrade the software
to V100R006 first, and then upgrade it to V200R001 or a later version.
Alternatively, you can delete the user account before the upgrade, reconfigure and
save the user account, and upgrade the software.

41

If the software already has patches installed, you do not need to delete the patches
before the upgrade. After the upgrade is complete, the original patches are not
activated.
Run the startup patch command to specify the patch for next startup before the
upgrade.

42

After the stack upgrade is complete, you only need to install the patch on the
master device.

43

The V200R003C00SPC300 and later versions do not support setting queue

numbers for protocol packets. After the software is upgraded to
V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version, the configuration of cp-car total pps is
lost.

44

The V200R003C00SPC300 and later versions do not support limiting the number
of packets sent to the CPU within a certain period. After the software is upgraded
to V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version, the configuration of queue
packet-type packet-type queue-value is lost.

45

The V200R003C00SPC300 and later versions do not support the function of

setting the maximum rate of sending packets to the CPU. After the software
version is upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version, the configuration
of cp-car { total | queue queue-index } speed speed-value is lost.

46

The Smart Link group in V200R003C00SP300 and later versions cannot

communicate with the Smart Link groups of earlier versions through SHA
encryption. To enable the Smart Link groups to communicate with each other, use
non-encryption or simple encryption mode.

47

After an earlier version is upgraded to V200R003C00SP300 or a later version, the

SHA encryption password of the Smart Link saved in configuration file will be
invalid and needs to be reconfigured.

48

In a version earlier than V200R003C00SPC300, if a user name is configured in the

MAC address format for MAC address authentication and the AAA authentication
scheme is local authentication, the online users are not affected after the version is
upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version. However, for new users, run
mac-authen username macaddress format { with-hyphen | without-hyphen }
password cipher password to modify configuration and local-user user-name
password cipher password to reconfigure the accounts and passwords for old
users; otherwise, old users cannot go online again.

Description

V100R006 and later versions do not support the automatic downspeeding function
on ports. After the software is upgraded to V100R006 or a later version, a port and
a PC probably cannot automatically negotiate and connect to each other. Replace
the network cable to solve the problem.

50

In V200R005C00, the default link type on interfaces is changed to

negotiation-desirable. If the default link type hybrid is used in an earlier version,
the port link-type hybrid configuration is added to the configuration file after the
system is upgraded to V200R005, and the link type is still hybrid.

51

In V200R005, the default MPLS label distribution method of BGP/MPLS IP VPN

on S5700HI, S5710EI, and S5710HI is changed from one-label-per-route to
one-label-per-VPN instance. If the label distribution method is one-label-per-route
in earlier versions, the apply-label per-route buildrun will be added to the
configuration file after the software version is upgraded to V200R005. That is, the
labels are still distributed on the basis of route.

52

In V200R005, the default broadcast suppression threshold is changed from 100%

to 50%. If the default threshold (100%) is used or the threshold is set to 50% in
earlier versions, the buildrun is not generated after the software version is upgraded
to V200R005. In this situation, the broadcast suppression threshold on interface is
50%. The buildrun is generated for other configurations after the upgrade.

53

After the system software is upgraded to V200R005C00, the original MTU settings
on physical interfaces or sub-interfaces are kept. After the upgrade is complete, if
the mtu mtu command is executed multiple times to change the MTU values, only
the last configuration takes effect.

54

In V200R005, a new user access control mode, unified mode, is provided. In the
unified mode, authentication events can trigger various authorization actions,
pre-authentication connection, multi-authentication, user ACL, and wireless user
control. In V200R005, the unified mode is used as the default mode. After
V200R003 is upgraded to V200R005, the user access control mode is not changed,
but the undo authentication unified-mode command is added.

55

In the versions earlier than V200R005, the STP TC-protection function is disabled
by default. In V200R005, this function is enabled by default. If the stp
tc-protection command has been executed, the command buildrun is deleted after
the version is upgraded to V200R005 but the function is still valid. After the
upgrade is complete, the stp tc-protection command cannot be used.

56

The security of MD5 cipher algorithm of BGP peers is improved in V200R005. If

the cipher password has been configured in an earlier version, the system encrypts
the password again after the upgrade. The configuration file is also modified. The
configuration file needs to be saved manually.

57

In the versions earlier than V200R005, the cipher-text password of MPLS RSVP
authentication in the configuration file starts and ends with %@%@. After the
version is upgraded to V200R005, the password starts and ends with @%@%. The
password is encrypted again when the upgrade is complete; therefore, the
configuration file needs to be saved manually after the upgrade.

58

In the versions earlier than V200R005, the cipher-text password of MPLS LDP
authentication in the configuration file starts and ends with %@%@. After the
version is upgraded to V200R005, the password starts and ends with @%@%. The
password is encrypted again when the upgrade is complete; therefore, the
configuration file needs to be saved manually after the upgrade.

59

In V200R003 and earlier versions, the users going online through free-ip have the
maximum rights. In V200R005 and later versions, these users have the minimum
rights. The rights of online users are not affected after the upgrade.

60

In V200R003 and earlier versions, the default retry interval of local accounts is 30
minutes, authentication failure times is 30, and locking time is 30 minutes. In
V200R005, the corresponding settings are changed to 5 minutes, 3, and 5 minutes,
to ensure device security. If the default settings have been used in V200R003 or an
earlier version, the new default settings will take effect after the version is
upgraded to V200R005.

61

The Telnet server function is disabled by default in V200R005.

If V200R003 or an earlier version is upgraded to V200R005, the status of

Telnet server remains unchanged.

If a new device with empty configuration runs V200R005C00SPC300, you can

find that the configuration file contains undo telnet server enable/undo telnet
ipv6 server enable when you run the display current-configuration command.
To use the Telnet function, run the telnet server enable or telnet ipv6 server
enable command.

Note: The Telnet protocol has security risks. STelnet is recommended.

62

V200R005 does not support MAC address reauthentication on VLANIF interfaces.

If MAC address reauthentication has been configured on a VLANIF interface in
V200R003, the configuration will be lost after the version is upgraded to
V200R005.

63

In V200R005 and later versions, the switch does not support the NAP function. If
the NAP function has been configured, the configuration will be invalid after the
version is upgraded to V200R005 or a later version and the buildrun is lost.

64

After the software of S5700EI or S5700SI is upgraded successfully, check the flash
memory space before loading the web file of the new version. If the flash memory
space is insufficient, delete an outdated software package or patch file.

65

Before downgrading V200R005C00SPC500 to an earlier version, run the reset

boot password command to restore the default BootROM password; otherwise,
the original BootROM password will become invalid and you cannot enter the
BootROM menu.

66

Before upgrading the version to V200R005C00SPC500, confirm that your switch

model supports V200R005C00SPC500. If your switch model does not support
V200R005C00SPC500, do not upgrade it to V200R005C00SPC500.

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

4.1 Upgrading a Switch to V200R005C00SPC500 Using the

Command Line
The command line upgrade method has little impact on services; therefore, you are advised to
upgrade an operating device by using the command line.
Purpose

To upgrade the system software

Impact

Services are interrupted when the device restarts.

Time Required

In the scenario where a single device is configured and service

deployment is simple, services are interrupted about three
minutes. In the scenario where service deployment is
complicated, the service interruption time increases and the time
depends on the complexity of service.

Requirements

The switch that runs system software of an earlier version

functions properly.

The available space in the flash memory is sufficient for

storing the system software.

The methods of upgrading the system software using command line are similar on the S5700 and
S6700. In the following description, the system software of the S5700EI is upgraded.

Some models, such as S5700SI and S6700, have dedicated management interfaces, MEth. The MEth
interfaces can be used as the Layer 3 interfaces.

Before the upgrade, use the terminal monitor command to enable the terminal to display logs, traps,
and debugging information sent from the information center.

You can use any of the following methods to load the system software:

Use the S5700EI as the TFTP client.

Use the S5700EI as the FTP server.

Use the S5700EI as the FTP client.

Use the S5700EI as the SFTP client.

Use the S5700EI as the SFTP server.

Upgrade Guide

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

FTP and TFTP are insecure. SFTP is recommended.

4.1.1 Method 1: Use the S5700EI as the TFTP Client

Huawei does not provide TFTP client software. Obtain the software and install it before the upgrade.
The TFTP32 program is recommended.

Step 1 Configure the TFTP server.

Run the TFTP server program on a PC and configure the PC:

Click Browse to set the directory for storing the new system software.

The TFTP server address in Server interface is automatically set by the system, for
example, 10.164.30.29. However, if the IP address is incorrect you can manually change
it.

Do not stop the TFTP server program when you are backing up data.
Step 2 Back up the system software, configuration file, and patch files to the TFTP server.
Before the backup, check the size of the files. After the backup, compare the size of the
original file with the size of the backup file. Ensure that the two files have the same size.

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

4.2.1 Uploading the System Software

4.2.1.1 Uploading the System Software Through the Serial Interface
Purpose

To upgrade the system software

Impact

Services are interrupted during the system software uploading and the
device reboot.

Time Required

The software uploading time depends on many factors, such as the

system software size, transmission rate on the serial interface, and
operator's skill. When the transmission rate of the serial interface is
115200 bit/s, the uploading time is about 30 minutes.

Prerequisites

The matched BootROM is upgraded.

The flash memory has enough space to store the system software.

Step 1 Enter the BootROM menu.

When the S5700EI is starting, the following information is displayed:
Press Ctrl+B to enter BOOTROM menu... 1

Press Ctrl+B before the countdown timer expires, and then enter the password. The default
password is Admin@huawei.com. Then the advanced BootROM menu is displayed. The
following information is displayed:

S5700&S6700 Series Ethernet Switches

Upgrade Guide

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

Changing the transmission rate of the serial interface causes interruption of the
communication between the PC and S5700EI. To restore the communication between the PC
and the S5700EI, you must set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC to be the
same as that of the serial interface on the S5700EI.
The XMODEM protocol is transmitted at 128 bit/s. If the size of a packet is not a multiple of
128 bits, the packet size increases. After the stack reboots, configurations cannot be restored
because the packet size changes. It is recommended that you download the system software
package through SFTP, FTP or TFTP.
Select 3. Modify serial interface boot parameter. The following information is displayed:
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:

9600(default)
19200
38400
57600
115200

Select an appropriate baud rate:

Enter your choice(1-5):

Select the transmission rate for the serial interface as required. The transmission rate is
expressed in bit/s. The default transmission rate of the serial interface on the S5700EI is 9600
bit/s. A larger value you enter represents a higher transmission rate of the serial interface. It is
recommended that you enter 5: 115200. If you change the transmission rate of the serial
interface on the S5700EI, set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC to be the
same as that of the serial interface on the S5700EI. In this manner, you can restore the
communication between the PC and the S5700EI.
For example, after you select 5: 115200, the following information is displayed:
Baud rate is 115200 bps. Please change the terminal's speed to 115200 bps

Perform the following settings on the HyperTerminal of the PC to restore the communication
between the PC and the S5700EI:

On the HyperTerminal, choose Call > Disconnect. The connection is closed

Choose File > Properties. The Properties dialog box is displayed.

On the Connect To tab page, click Configure. The COM Properties dialog box is
displayed.

Select 115200bit/s from the Bits per second drop-down list box.

In the COM Properties and Properties dialog boxes, click OK.

On the HyperTerminal, choose Call > Call. The connection is reestablished.

Step 4 Upgrade the system software.

Select 2. Download file to Flash through serial interface in the serial interface submenu,
and the following information is displayed:
Enter your choice(1-4): 2
Please Select File.

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

4.2.3 Restarting the Switch

The switch is automatically upgraded by loading the latest system software during startup.
Enter 8. Reboot on the advanced BootROM menu to restart the switch. Then, the S5700EI
restores the baud rate on the console interface to 9600 bit/s. The baud rate of the
HyperTerminal also needs to be set to 9600 bit/s. The PC then can communicate with the
S5700EI.

4.3 Upgrading a Switch to V200R005C00SPC500 Using the

USB Flash Drive
4.3.1 Overview
Use the USB flash drive in which the system software, patch file, and configuration file are
stored. The software commissioning engineer is not required. You do not need to manually
load configuration to each switch.
Only the S5700SI, S5710EI, S5700HI, S5710HI, and S6700 support USB-based deployment. In
V200R003C00 and earlier versions, USB-based deployment is not supported in the stack environment.

The general process of the upgrade in the USB way is as follows:

1

Copy files.
When the switch is started successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at 0.5
Hz), the USB flash drive can be inserted to load files. The switch automatically
downloads the system software and configuration file according to the index file in the
USB flash drive.
Before using the USB flash drive to upgrade the software, you must prepare the index file. For the
method of making index files, see the "USB-based Deployment Configuration" section in the
S2750&S5700&S6700 V200R005(C00SPC300&C00SPC500&C01&C02) Product Documentation.

Restart the switch.

The switch sets the system software and configuration file for next startup, and then
restarts automatically.

Verify the loading of files.

After restarting successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at 0.5 Hz), the
switch begins to verify the loaded files. When the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks
at 0.5 Hz, the upgrade is finished.

4.3.2 Upgrading the Software Using the USB Flash Drive

4.3.2.1 Preparations for Upgrade
Step 1 Prepare the hardware.

Issue 01 (2015-07-27)

USB port: The S5700-LI and S5700-SI provide USB 1.1; the S5710-HI, S5700-HI,
S5710-EI and S6700 provide USB 2.0.

In the S5700LI series, only the S5700-52X-LI-48CS-AC, S5701-28X-LI-24S-AC, S5701-28X-LI-AC,

S5700-28X-LI-24S-DC, and S5700-28X-LI-24S-AC models support USB-based deployment.

USB flash drive:

The USB flash drive delivered with Huawei switch is recommended because this USB
flash drive is compatible with the switch. The USB flash drive must be paid
independently. If you have not bought the USB flash drive, contact local Huawei office.
The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 format; otherwise, set the format to FAT32
before using it.
The space in the USB flash drive must be sufficient for the system software and
configuration file.

Step 2 Prepare the system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file.
Step 3 Create the index file.
1

Create the file usbload_config.txt.

Fill in the file.

When an S5700-SI is upgraded from V100R006 or an earlier version to V200R005, the

index file is in either of the following formats:

If an index file contains the following two formats, the S5700-SI uses the information in format (2).
If the required information is not obtained, the S5700-SI uses the information in format (1).

To write multiple items in the index file, press Enter when you finish each item.

To upgrade the same system software and configuration file on multiple devices, fill
in the file in the format <boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=; cfgfile=; patchfile=;/>.
a)

boardtype=s53mv is a fixed format, which does not need to be modified.

b)

Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.

c)

Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.

d)

Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.

Example:
<boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R005C00SPC500.cc; cfgfile=vrpcfg.cfg;
patchfile=patch.pat;/>

To upgrade a single device, fill in the file in the format <mac=; vrpfile=; cfgfile=;

<mac=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>

<esn=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>
<boardtype=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>

The first line in the index file must be the SN to prevent repeated copy. The SN consists of creation
date + time, for example, <time-sn=201105091219;/>. Before copying a file, the device compares
the SNs. If the SN of a file to be copied already exists, the device does not copy the file. After the
file is copied, the device stores the SN. The index files without SNs are considered invalid, and the
device will stop copying the files.

If an index file contains the following three formats, the device uses the information in format (2). If
the required information is not obtained, the device uses the information in format (3) and then
format (1). When only one USB flash drive is used in the upgrade, the values of mac=, esn=, and
boardtype= are default. When the device obtains the value default, the device starts to copy the file
without comparing it with other files.

When editing an index file, press Enter when a line is finished. After editing the file, save it.

Select the upgrade files, including system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file as
required.

The upgrade procedures for S5700-LI, S5700-SI, S5710-HI, S5700-HI, S5710EI, and S6700 are the
same.

To upgrade the same system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file on
multiple devices, fill in the file in the format <boardtype=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=;
webfile=; patchfile=;/>.
a)

To obtain the value of boardtype, view device labels or run the display version
command. boardtype=default indicates that all devices will be upgraded.

If the version number behind vrpver= is the same as the current version, the device will not restart.

Step 4 Copy the index file, system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file to the root
directory of the USB flash drive.
The index files must be stored to the root directory on the USB flash drive; the other files are stored in
the corresponding directories.

Do not power off the switch during file copy; otherwise, the upgrade fails or the switch
cannot start.

Do not remove the USB flash drive before the upgrade is finished; otherwise, the USB
flash drive may be damaged.

4.3.2.2 Procedure
Step 1 Power on the S5700-HI, and wait until the system completes the startup (you are advertised to
wait for three minutes).
Step 2 Confirm that the system is operating stably (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks every
two seconds). If the system operating is unstable, wait or solve the issue.

If the SYS indicator is on and in green or orange, the system startup is not finished. Wait
until the system starts successfully.

If the SYS indicator is steady red, the system is started but an error occurs. Fix the
problem before the next step. Check whether the power supply and the fan function
properly. If no, power off the S5700-HI, and then restart the S5700-HI. If the fault
persists (the indicator is red), contact Huawei technical support personnel.

Step 3 Insert the USB flash drive.

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

If the SYS indicator is in green and blinks more than twice every second, the system is
copying the system software and configuration file from the USB flash drive.

After copying the files, the system restarts.

If the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks every two seconds after the restart, the
upgrade is successful. Now you can remove the USB flash drive.

If the SYS indicator is steady on or blinks red, an error occurs. Power off the S5700-HI and
power on it, and then insert the USB flash drive again. If the upgrade fails three times, check
whether the index file on the USB flash drive is correct, or contact the Huawei technical
support personnel.
NOTE

If you want to upgrade the software through USB flash drive upon a failure of USB-based upgrade, load
the files to the USB flash drive again.

5 Upgrade Operations on a Stack

Upgrade Operations on a Stack

5.1 Upgrading All Stack Member Switches to

V200R005C00SPC500 by Using the Command Line
Purpose

To upgrade the system software

Impact

Services are interrupted when the devices restart.

Time Required

When a single device is upgraded and service deployment is simple,

services are interrupted about three minutes. When a stack is upgraded,
the service interruption time increases, and the time depends on the
complexity of services and the stack.

Prerequisites

The devices to be upgraded function properly.

The flash memory has enough space to store the system software.

The methods of for upgrading the system software of the S5700 and the S6700 using the command
line interface are similar. The section describes only how to download the system software by using
the S5700 as the FTP server. For other methods of loading the system software, see the
S5700&S6700 Series Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide - Basic Configurations. If a high
security is required, the SFTP protocol is recommended.

Some models, such as S5700SI and S6700, have dedicated management interfaces, MEth. The MEth
interfaces can be used as the Layer 3 interfaces.

To retain the roles of the master and slave devices after the upgrade, set priority of the master switch
to be the highest in the stack before the upgrade.

The following operations are performed on the master switch. Here, the stack contains two
member switches.
Step 1 Ensure that all the member switches have sufficient available space in the flash memory. For
details, see section 3.11 Checking the Flash Memory Space.
Step 2 Configure the switch as the FTP server.
Start the FTP service on the switch, and set the FTP user name to ftpuser and password to
admin@123456.

5.2 Intelligent Upgrade

5.2.1 Overview
Intelligent upgrade is a function that automatically upgrades or downgrades the system
software of a new member switch to the version of the master switch.
A stack system is established only when all the following requirements are met:

All the member switches use the same software version. If the master switch detects a
different software version on a new member switch, it upgrades or downgrades the
software of the new member switch to the version of the master switch.
The S5700 and the S6700 support up to nine switches in a stack system.

All the member switches belong to the same series. That is, the EI series and SI series
cannot form a stack.

All the member switches are connected by using stack cables and stack modules.

All the member switches are working properly.

The stacking function is enabled on all the member switches.

The stack processes version upgrade and downgrade for new member switches in the same
way. The following section describes how to upgrade a new member switch by using the
intelligent upgrade function.

5 Upgrade Operations on a Stack

5.2.2 Upgrading a New Member Switch Using the Intelligent

Upgrade Function
Preparations for Upgrade
Before upgrading a new member switch of a stack, ensure that:

The new member switch and the current stack members belong to the same series.

The new member switch is connected to other member switches by using stack cables
and stack modules.

The stacking function is enabled on the new member switch. (This function is enabled by
default.)

If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space to store the
startup software package, the switch automatically deletes a software package to free up
the space. If the switch is an S5700, it deletes a non-startup software package. If the
available space in the flash memory is still insufficient for the upgrade software, the switch
restarts repeatedly. In this situation, upgrade the software of the switch to the version of
the stack system manually, and then add the switch to the stack. For the upgrade procedure,
see chapter 4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch.

During the upgrade, ensure that the stack cables are functioning properly. If the upgrade of
a switch fails, upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack
manually, and then add the switch to the stack.

The running time of the newly added stack must be shorter than the running time of the
old stack; otherwise, the new stack software cannot be upgraded to the same version as the
old stack software through intelligent upgrade.

Upgrade Process
Start the new member switch.
The master switch of the stack automatically upgrades the new switch. If the upgrade is
successful, the following information is displayed:
On the master switch:
In Stack, device 0 load to new device 1 .......... start
In Stack, device 0 load to new device 1 .......... success

On the new member switch:

Manually upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack system, and
then add the switch to the stack system. For details, see sections 4.1 Upgrading a Switch to
V200R005C00SPC500 Using the Command Line or 4.2 Upgrading a Switch to the
V200R005C00SPC500 Using the BootROM.

5.3 Smooth Upgrade

5.3.1 Overview
A smooth upgrade can be performed in a stack that has uplinks and downlinks working in
redundancy mode. A stack system is divided into an active area (with the master switch) and a
backup area. Member switches in the two areas are upgraded in turn. When an area is being
upgraded, traffic is transmitted through the other area, minimizing the impact of the upgrade
on services. This upgrade method applies to scenarios sensitive to the service interruption
time.

5.3.2 Preparations for Upgrade

Before upgrading a stack system, ensure that:

The uplinks and downlinks work in redundancy mode.

The system software for next startup supports the smooth upgrade function.

Member switches in the stack are running the same system software, with the same
software package name, version, and path.

Member switches have the same system software specified for next startup, with the
same software package name, version, and path.

The stack cables are correctly connected.

The actual slot IDs of cards are the same as configured slot IDs.

5 Upgrade Operations on a Stack

5.3.3 Upgrade Process

Step 1 Upload system software to all the member switches in the stack. Ensure that member switches
have the same system software, with the same software package name, version, and path. For
details about how to upload files, see 5.1 Upgrading All Stack Member Switches to
V200R005C00SPC500 by Using the Command Line.
Step 2 Run the system-view command to enter the system view.
Step 3 Run the upgrade backup-area slot slot-id to slot-id command to define the active and
backup areas for a smooth upgrade.
The member switches with stack IDs in the specified range join the backup area, and the other
member switches automatically join the active area.

The active and backup areas cannot contain the same member switch, and both areas must have at
least one member switch.

The backup area cannot contain the master switch.

Member switches in each area must be directly connected.

Member switches in the active and backup areas form the entire stack.

Step 4 (Optional) Run the display upgrade area command to check whether the configured areas
meet the requirements of the current stack topology.
If the stack topology changes after the areas are configured, the smooth upgrade will fail. To
avoid this problem, check the area configuration before starting a smooth upgrade. If the areas
fail the check, define the active and backup areas correctly according to the current stack
topology.
Step 5 Run the upgrade start command to enable smooth upgrade.
Step 6 (Optional) Run the display upgrade state [ slot slot-id ] command to check the smooth
upgrade status.
If errors occur during a smooth upgrade, member switches can automatically downgrade to the original
system version and set up a stack again.

Upgrade Guide

7 Version Rollback

Only the configuration file in cfg format can be used for rollback. Before performing
version rollback, check the format of the configuration file. If the configuration file is not
in cfg format, save it in the cfg format.

Before rolling back the system software from V200R005 to an earlier version, check
whether the corresponding patch file has been installed. If so, install and activate the
patch.

If the configuration is not saved after the switch is upgraded to V200R005, the system
version can roll back directly. If the configuration is saved after the upgrade, the switch
faces risks of login failure or service interruption after the system version rolls back to the
old version. To prevent the risks, back up the configuration file before the upgrade.
Rename the configuration file and save it to the flash memory. During version rollback,
specify the old configuration file for the next startup.

7.1.2 Loading the Previous System Software

The procedure for loading the previous system software package is the same as the procedure
for loading the system software for the upgrade. For details, see chapters 4 Upgrade
Operations on a Single Switch or 5 Upgrade Operations on a Stack.

7.1.3 Performing Version Rollback

The version rollback method is the same as the version upgrade method. For details, see
chapters 4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch or 5 Upgrade Operations on a Stack.

7.1.4 Verifying Version Rollback

The verification of version rollback is the same as the verification of version upgrade. For
details, see chapter 6 Verifying the Upgrade.
