The service interruption time depends on many factors, such as the system software size, upgrade
method, operator's skill, and service configurations. The following service interruption time is for your
reference.
In the following examples, the switches are not configured and they are not in any stack.
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the serial interface, the service interruption time is as follows (the baudrate is
115200):
S5700: 50 minutes
S6700: 47 minutes
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the network port (FTP mode), the service interruption time is as follows:
S5700: 6 minutes
S6700: 6 minutes
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
If the switches are upgraded by using the command line, the service interruption time is as
follows:
S5700: 3 minutes
S6700: 3 minutes
Description
When you upgrade the software using the command line, stack upgrade, or USB
flash drive, do not copy or delete files.
After the version is upgraded, ensure that the configuration is saved because a later
version is compatible with early versions but an early version is incompatible with
later versions. If the configuration is not saved, the configuration will be lost in the
case of version rollback.

If DAI is enabled on a VLAN and an interface belonging to the VLAN using the
arp anti-attack check user-bind enable command, V200R001 and later versions
use a different rule than that used in earlier versions to check ARP packets. In
earlier versions, an ARP packet is considered valid as long as the packet passes the
check on the interface. In V200R001 and later versions, an ARP packet is
considered valid only when the packet passes the check on the interface and
VLAN.

The system displays "do not power off" during update of the file system. Do not
power off or restart the switch in this process. Otherwise, all data on the switch
will be lost. If the device is powered off due to incorrect operation or for other
reasons, upgrade the software to V200R003C00SPC300 through BootROM
according to 4.2 Upgrading a Switch to the V200R005C00SPC500 Using the
BootROM or contact Huawei technical support engineers.
14
15
If a switch has no management interface, enter the BIOS menu and use the first
electrical interface to transfer the software package to the switch. Errors may occur
if you use other interfaces to transfer the software package.
16
If an S5700-SI or S5700-LI switch has been configured with the maximum number
of ACL CPCAR entries and inbound rate limiting before it is upgraded to
V200R005, the ACL CPCAR configuration may be lost after the upgrade due to
insufficient resources for ACL CPCAR entries.

Description
18
If the system version rolls back to an earlier version from V200R002 or a later
version, the stack configuration may be lost. When this occurs, the stack cannot be
set up. To set up a stack, reconfigure the stacking function and re-connect stack
cables if necessary.
For example, S5700LI V200R002 has two stack ports. If the two ports are used for
stacking, the stack cannot be set up after the system version rolls back to an earlier
version.
19
During BootROM update, the XMODEM protocol is transmitted at 128 bit/s. If the
size of a packet is not a multiple of 128 bits, the packet size increases. After the
stack reboots, configurations cannot be restored because the packet size changes. It
is recommended that you download the system software package through FTP or
TFTP.
20
21
22
23
During a software downgrade, if the system displays "Info: After the system
version is changed successfully, it can only be changed to V200R002 or later in
next version change.", do not change the version to V200R001 or an earlier
version. If the system displays "Error: The system cannot be downgraded to this
version. Please use V100R006 or a later version.", use V100R006 or a later
version.
24
25
26
After the software version is downgraded or upgraded to any version through the
USB flash drive, index file verification may be failed. A formal patch must be
installed to solve this problem.

If the BFD negotiation timer is set to be shorter than 100 ms in V100R002, the
configuration becomes invalid after the version is upgraded to V200R003 or later.
39
30
In V200R001C01, the range of NQA server port numbers is changed from 1-65535
to 7 and 1025-65535. Therefore, if the NQA server port number has been set to 1-6
or 8-1024 before the upgrade is performed, the configuration will be lost after the
upgrade.
31
32
33
If a physical stack port is not bound to a logical stack port before the upgrade, the
port restores to a service port after the version is upgraded to
V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version.
34
35
36
37
After the software version is upgraded to V200R003 or a later version, the default
settings and value ranges of rate limit on the management port are changed. If the
rate limit before the upgrade is beyond the value range allowed by V200R005, the
rate limit is changed to the maximum value in V200R005. If the rate limit before
the upgrade is the same as the default value in V200R005, the buildrun is deleted.
38
After the software version is upgraded to V200R003 or a later version, the default
settings and value ranges of cp-car total pps packets are changed. If the rate limit
before the upgrade is beyond the value range allowed by V200R003, the rate limit
is changed to the maximum value in V200R003. If the rate limit before the upgrade
is the same as the default value in V200R003, the buildrun is deleted.

After the software version is upgraded to V200R001 or a later version, the local
user password may fail to restore. It is recommended that you upgrade the software
to V100R006 first, and then upgrade it to V200R001 or a later version.
Alternatively, you can delete the user account before the upgrade, reconfigure and
save the user account, and upgrade the software.
41
If the software already has patches installed, you do not need to delete the patches
before the upgrade. After the upgrade is complete, the original patches are not
activated.
Run the startup patch command to specify the patch for next startup before the
upgrade.
42
After the stack upgrade is complete, you only need to install the patch on the
master device.
43
44
The V200R003C00SPC300 and later versions do not support limiting the number
of packets sent to the CPU within a certain period. After the software is upgraded
to V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version, the configuration of queue
packet-type packet-type queue-value is lost.

V100R006 and later versions do not support the automatic downspeeding function
on ports. After the software is upgraded to V100R006 or a later version, a port and
a PC probably cannot automatically negotiate and connect to each other. Replace
the network cable to solve the problem.
50
51
52
53
After the system software is upgraded to V200R005C00, the original MTU settings
on physical interfaces or sub-interfaces are kept. After the upgrade is complete, if
the mtu mtu command is executed multiple times to change the MTU values, only
the last configuration takes effect.
54
In V200R005, a new user access control mode, unified mode, is provided. In the
unified mode, authentication events can trigger various authorization actions,
pre-authentication connection, multi-authentication, user ACL, and wireless user
control. In V200R005, the unified mode is used as the default mode. After
V200R003 is upgraded to V200R005, the user access control mode is not changed,
but the undo authentication unified-mode command is added.
55
In the versions earlier than V200R005, the STP TC-protection function is disabled
by default. In V200R005, this function is enabled by default. If the stp
tc-protection command has been executed, the command buildrun is deleted after
the version is upgraded to V200R005 but the function is still valid. After the
upgrade is complete, the stp tc-protection command cannot be used.
56
57
In the versions earlier than V200R005, the cipher-text password of MPLS RSVP
authentication in the configuration file starts and ends with %@%@. After the
version is upgraded to V200R005, the password starts and ends with @%@%. The
password is encrypted again when the upgrade is complete; therefore, the
configuration file needs to be saved manually after the upgrade.

59
In V200R003 and earlier versions, the users going online through free-ip have the
maximum rights. In V200R005 and later versions, these users have the minimum
rights. The rights of online users are not affected after the upgrade.
60
In V200R003 and earlier versions, the default retry interval of local accounts is 30
minutes, authentication failure times is 30, and locking time is 30 minutes. In
V200R005, the corresponding settings are changed to 5 minutes, 3, and 5 minutes,
to ensure device security. If the default settings have been used in V200R003 or an
earlier version, the new default settings will take effect after the version is
upgraded to V200R005.
61
63
In V200R005 and later versions, the switch does not support the NAP function. If
the NAP function has been configured, the configuration will be invalid after the
version is upgraded to V200R005 or a later version and the buildrun is lost.
64
After the software of S5700EI or S5700SI is upgraded successfully, check the flash
memory space before loading the web file of the new version. If the flash memory
space is insufficient, delete an outdated software package or patch file.

The methods of upgrading the system software using command line are similar on the S5700 and
S6700. In the following description, the system software of the S5700EI is upgraded.
Some models, such as S5700SI and S6700, have dedicated management interfaces, MEth. The MEth
interfaces can be used as the Layer 3 interfaces.
Before the upgrade, use the terminal monitor command to enable the terminal to display logs, traps,
and debugging information sent from the information center.
You can use any of the following methods to load the system software:
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
19
Click Browse to set the directory for storing the new system software.
The TFTP server address in Server interface is automatically set by the system, for
example, 10.164.30.29. However, if the IP address is incorrect you can manually change
it.
Do not stop the TFTP server program when you are backing up data.
Step 2 Back up the system software, configuration file, and patch files to the TFTP server.
Before the backup, check the size of the files. After the backup, compare the size of the
original file with the size of the backup file. Ensure that the two files have the same size.

Issue 01 (2015-07-27)

Changing the transmission rate of the serial interface causes interruption of the
communication between the PC and S5700EI. To restore the communication between the PC
and the S5700EI, you must set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC to be the
same as that of the serial interface on the S5700EI.
The XMODEM protocol is transmitted at 128 bit/s. If the size of a packet is not a multiple of
128 bits, the packet size increases. After the stack reboots, configurations cannot be restored
because the packet size changes. It is recommended that you download the system software
package through SFTP, FTP or TFTP.
Select 3. Modify serial interface boot parameter. The following information is displayed:
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
9600(default)
19200
38400
57600
115200
Select the transmission rate for the serial interface as required. The transmission rate is
expressed in bit/s. The default transmission rate of the serial interface on the S5700EI is 9600
bit/s. A larger value you enter represents a higher transmission rate of the serial interface. It is
recommended that you enter 5: 115200. If you change the transmission rate of the serial
interface on the S5700EI, set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC to be the
same as that of the serial interface on the S5700EI. In this manner, you can restore the
communication between the PC and the S5700EI.
For example, after you select 5: 115200, the following information is displayed:
Baud rate is 115200 bps. Please change the terminal's speed to 115200 bps
Perform the following settings on the HyperTerminal of the PC to restore the communication
between the PC and the S5700EI:
On the Connect To tab page, click Configure. The COM Properties dialog box is
displayed.
Select 115200bit/s from the Bits per second drop-down list box.

Choose Transfer > Send File. The Send File dialog box is displayed.
Click Browse to select the upgrade file of the system software. Then select Xmodem from the
Protocol drop-down list box. Click Send to start sending the file.
After transferring the upgrade file, the system prompts you whether to change the file name. If
no, save it with the default file name. The default file name is not the uploaded file name. The
system software name in the flash memory or the default file name hw-switch.cc is used.
Generally, it is recommended that the file name be changed.
Only the files with the file name extension .cc can be used as the upgrade files of the system software on
the S5700EI.
If the file S5700EI-V200R005C00SPC500.cc has already been saved in the flash memory,
the system prompts you whether to overwrite the existing file with the new one. The

Copy files.
When the switch is started successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at 0.5
Hz), the USB flash drive can be inserted to load files. The switch automatically
downloads the system software and configuration file according to the index file in the
USB flash drive.
Before using the USB flash drive to upgrade the software, you must prepare the index file. For the
method of making index files, see the "USB-based Deployment Configuration" section in the
S2750&S5700&S6700 V200R005(C00SPC300&C00SPC500&C01&C02) Product Documentation.
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
USB port: The S5700-LI and S5700-SI provide USB 1.1; the S5710-HI, S5700-HI,
S5710-EI and S6700 provide USB 2.0.
43
Step 2 Prepare the system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file.
Step 3 Create the index file.
1
If an index file contains the following two formats, the S5700-SI uses the information in format (2).
If the required information is not obtained, the S5700-SI uses the information in format (1).
To write multiple items in the index file, press Enter when you finish each item.
To upgrade the same system software and configuration file on multiple devices, fill
in the file in the format <boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=; cfgfile=; patchfile=;/>.
a)
b)
c)
d)
Example:
<boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R005C00SPC500.cc; cfgfile=vrpcfg.cfg;
patchfile=patch.pat;/>
To upgrade a single device, fill in the file in the format <mac=; vrpfile=; cfgfile=;
patchfile=;/>.
a)
View the MAC address of the switch on the chassis and fill in the MAC address
behind mac= in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
b)
c)
d)
Example:
<mac=0018-8200-0001;
cfgfile=vrpcfg1.cfg;
<mac=0018-8200-0002;
cfgfile=vrpcfg2.cfg;
vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R005C00SPC500.cc;
patchfile=patch1.pat;/>
vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R005C00SPC500.cc;
patchfile=patch2.pat;/>
If you need to upgrade the system from V100R006 to V200R005, or upgrade the
configuration file or patch file, the index file is in any of the following formats:
<time-sn=201301090851;/>
<usb-deployment password=123abc;/>
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
44
The first line in the index file must be the SN to prevent repeated copy. The SN consists of creation
date + time, for example, <time-sn=201105091219;/>. Before copying a file, the device compares
the SNs. If the SN of a file to be copied already exists, the device does not copy the file. After the
file is copied, the device stores the SN. The index files without SNs are considered invalid, and the
device will stop copying the files.
If an index file contains the following three formats, the device uses the information in format (2). If
the required information is not obtained, the device uses the information in format (3) and then
format (1). When only one USB flash drive is used in the upgrade, the values of mac=, esn=, and
boardtype= are default. When the device obtains the value default, the device starts to copy the file
without comparing it with other files.
When editing an index file, press Enter when a line is finished. After editing the file, save it.
Select the upgrade files, including system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file as
required.
The upgrade procedures for S5700-LI, S5700-SI, S5710-HI, S5700-HI, S5710EI, and S6700 are the
same.
To upgrade the same system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file on
multiple devices, fill in the file in the format <boardtype=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=;
webfile=; patchfile=;/>.
a)
To obtain the value of boardtype, view device labels or run the display version
command. boardtype=default indicates that all devices will be upgraded.
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)
The following two formats are used for upgrading a single device:
View the device's MAC address on the chassis and fill in the MAC address
behind mac= in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
b)

e)
f)
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)

View the device's ESN and fill in the ESN behind esn=.
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)
If a keyword is not found or matched, the value of this item is considered to be empty.
If the version number behind vrpver= is the same as the current version, the device will not restart.
Step 4 Copy the index file, system software, configuration file, web file, and patch file to the root
directory of the USB flash drive.
The index files must be stored to the root directory on the USB flash drive; the other files are stored in
the corresponding directories.
Do not power off the switch during file copy; otherwise, the upgrade fails or the switch
cannot start.
Do not remove the USB flash drive before the upgrade is finished; otherwise, the USB
flash drive may be damaged.

4.3.2.2 Procedure
Step 1 Power on the S5700-HI, and wait until the system completes the startup (you are advertised to
wait for three minutes).
Step 2 Confirm that the system is operating stably (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks every
two seconds). If the system operating is unstable, wait or solve the issue.
If the SYS indicator is on and in green or orange, the system startup is not finished. Wait
until the system starts successfully.
If the SYS indicator is steady red, the system is started but an error occurs. Fix the
problem before the next step. Check whether the power supply and the fan function
properly. If no, power off the S5700-HI, and then restart the S5700-HI. If the fault
persists (the indicator is red), contact Huawei technical support personnel.
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
46
If the SYS indicator is in green and blinks more than twice every second, the system is
copying the system software and configuration file from the USB flash drive.
If the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks every two seconds after the restart, the
upgrade is successful. Now you can remove the USB flash drive.
If the SYS indicator is steady on or blinks red, an error occurs. Power off the S5700-HI and
power on it, and then insert the USB flash drive again. If the upgrade fails three times, check
whether the index file on the USB flash drive is correct, or contact the Huawei technical
support personnel.
NOTE
If you want to upgrade the software through USB flash drive upon a failure of USB-based upgrade, load
the files to the USB flash drive again.

Impact
Time Required
Prerequisites
The flash memory has enough space to store the system software.
The methods of for upgrading the system software of the S5700 and the S6700 using the command
line interface are similar. The section describes only how to download the system software by using
the S5700 as the FTP server. For other methods of loading the system software, see the
S5700&S6700 Series Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide - Basic Configurations. If a high
security is required, the SFTP protocol is recommended.
Some models, such as S5700SI and S6700, have dedicated management interfaces, MEth. The MEth
interfaces can be used as the Layer 3 interfaces.
To retain the roles of the master and slave devices after the upgrade, set priority of the master switch
to be the highest in the stack before the upgrade.
The following operations are performed on the master switch. Here, the stack contains two
member switches.
Step 1 Ensure that all the member switches have sufficient available space in the flash memory. For
details, see section 3.11 Checking the Flash Memory Space.
Step 2 Configure the switch as the FTP server.
Start the FTP service on the switch, and set the FTP user name to ftpuser and password to
admin@123456.

All the member switches use the same software version. If the master switch detects a
different software version on a new member switch, it upgrades or downgrades the
software of the new member switch to the version of the master switch.
The S5700 and the S6700 support up to nine switches in a stack system.
All the member switches belong to the same series. That is, the EI series and SI series
cannot form a stack.
All the member switches are connected by using stack cables and stack modules.
The stack processes version upgrade and downgrade for new member switches in the same
way. The following section describes how to upgrade a new member switch by using the
intelligent upgrade function.
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
51
The new member switch and the current stack members belong to the same series.
The new member switch is connected to other member switches by using stack cables
and stack modules.
The stacking function is enabled on the new member switch. (This function is enabled by
default.)
If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space to store the
startup software package, the switch automatically deletes a software package to free up
the space. If the switch is an S5700, it deletes a non-startup software package. If the
available space in the flash memory is still insufficient for the upgrade software, the switch
restarts repeatedly. In this situation, upgrade the software of the switch to the version of
the stack system manually, and then add the switch to the stack. For the upgrade procedure,
see chapter 4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch.
During the upgrade, ensure that the stack cables are functioning properly. If the upgrade of
a switch fails, upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack
manually, and then add the switch to the stack.
The running time of the newly added stack must be shorter than the running time of the
old stack; otherwise, the new stack software cannot be upgraded to the same version as the
old stack software through intelligent upgrade.
Upgrade Process
Start the new member switch.
The master switch of the stack automatically upgrades the new switch. If the upgrade is
successful, the following information is displayed:
On the master switch:
In Stack, device 0 load to new device 1 .......... start
In Stack, device 0 load to new device 1 .......... success
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
52
If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space for the upgrade
software, the following information is displayed:
On the master switch:
In Stack, device 0 load to new device 1 .......... start
In Stack, device 0 load to new device 1 .......... fail
Manually upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack system, and
then add the switch to the stack system. For details, see sections 4.1 Upgrading a Switch to
V200R005C00SPC500 Using the Command Line or 4.2 Upgrading a Switch to the
V200R005C00SPC500 Using the BootROM.
The system software for next startup supports the smooth upgrade function.
Member switches in the stack are running the same system software, with the same
software package name, version, and path.
Member switches have the same system software specified for next startup, with the
same software package name, version, and path.
The actual slot IDs of cards are the same as configured slot IDs.
Issue 01 (2015-07-27)
53
The active and backup areas cannot contain the same member switch, and both areas must have at
least one member switch.
Member switches in the active and backup areas form the entire stack.
Step 4 (Optional) Run the display upgrade area command to check whether the configured areas
meet the requirements of the current stack topology.
If the stack topology changes after the areas are configured, the smooth upgrade will fail. To
avoid this problem, check the area configuration before starting a smooth upgrade. If the areas
fail the check, define the active and backup areas correctly according to the current stack
topology.
Step 5 Run the upgrade start command to enable smooth upgrade.
Step 6 (Optional) Run the display upgrade state [ slot slot-id ] command to check the smooth
upgrade status.
If errors occur during a smooth upgrade, member switches can automatically downgrade to the original
system version and set up a stack again.

7 Version Rollback
Only the configuration file in cfg format can be used for rollback. Before performing
version rollback, check the format of the configuration file. If the configuration file is not
in cfg format, save it in the cfg format.
Before rolling back the system software from V200R005 to an earlier version, check
whether the corresponding patch file has been installed. If so, install and activate the
patch.
If the configuration is not saved after the switch is upgraded to V200R005, the system
version can roll back directly. If the configuration is saved after the upgrade, the switch
faces risks of login failure or service interruption after the system version rolls back to the
old version. To prevent the risks, back up the configuration file before the upgrade.
Rename the configuration file and save it to the flash memory. During version rollback,
specify the old configuration file for the next startup.
