4. Installation
4.1 Setup
The grounding wrist strap is provided to prevent damage as the result of
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). To prevent damage to any of the TDXnet

components, use the wrist strap any time you are handling or otherwise coming
in contact with electronic components. Anyone applying this upgrade should be
familiar with ESD cause and effects.

4.2 Remove power from the TDXnet

The TDXnet power cable connects to the power terminal block, located inside the
power supply compartment at the base of the TDXnet unit. To disconnect the
power leads:
a) Loosen the captive screw on the
TDXnet rack.
b) Pull the captive screw clear of the
threaded hole in the power supply
base.

Safety
Catch

c) Swing the TDXnet rack out to reveal

the power supply base. Be sure that
the safety catch extends fully to
prevent the rack from accidentally
closing.
Figure 1

WARNING
High voltage present. Contact with exposed wires or terminals can cause
shock, burns, or death.
Remove power before attaching or disconnecting power cable leads.

d) Label and disconnect the

power cable leads from the
terminal block shown in
Figure 2.
e) Close the power supply lid.
f) Depress the safety catch to
release the card rack.
g) While holding the safety
catch down, swing the
TDXnet rack shut.
h) Push the captive screw back
into the threaded hole in the
power supply base and
tighten. Do not tighten more
than finger tight, as this may
strip the threads.

4.3 Remove the TDXnet cover

To access the TDXnet CPU board, first remove the top cover to access the
sampler backplane compartment.
a) Verify that power has been removed
from the TDXnet.
b) Remove all of the cables from the
front of the TDXnet box so that the
cover may be removed. Label each
cable since some of the cables are
similar.
c) Remove the 10 self tapping screws
where shown in Figure 3.
d) Begin removing the cover by lifting
the back (the end closest to the
indicator boards).
e) Once this end of the cover is clear,
work the cover free of the
connectors on the opposite end of
the cover and remove. Note: The
system may be populated with more
Sampler cards than are shown in the
Figure 3.

4.4 Remove the TDXnet CPU board

a) Attach the wrist grounding strap
(BNC P/N: 04425545) to your wrist
and attach the other side to an
electrical ground to prevent static
discharge.
b) Locate the TDXnet CPU board (refer
to the Figure 4).
c) Firmly grip the top sheet metal shield
of the CPU board with a pair of
needle nose pliers and carefully pull
the board out. It is best to grip the
sheet metal toward the middle of the
exposed back.

Figure 4

CAUTION

Do not attempt to pry the board

out of the enclosure by applying
pressure to any part of the board
or component on the board. This
can damage the board or
components on the board.

When using the needle nose pliers,

grip the sheet metal only in an area
that will not cause damage to onboard components.

4.5 Locate the EPROM

a) Unscrew the four screws on the
metal shield on the CPU board
assembly
b) Locate the EPROM ( in the socket
labeled U8). See Figure 5.
c) Note the semi-circular notch on the
edge of the EPROM and how it is
oriented in the socket. See EPROM
top view in Figure 6. The socket also
has a similar notch on its edge. The
notch of the new EPROM must be
oriented in the same direction as the
notch on the socket.

4.6 Remove EPROM

a) Use a flathead screwdriver to gently
pry the EPROM out of its socket and
set it aside. See Figure 7.
b) Begin on one end of the EPROM and
then the other, repeating this
process until the EPROM is loose
enough to remove.

4.7 Replace the EPROM

a) Remove the new EPROM from the anti-static bag and examine the EPROM
for bent or misaligned pins.
b) Orient the semi-circular notch at one end of the EPROM with the similar
notch on the socket.
c) Carefully place the EPROM in the socket being sure to align the EPROM
pins with the socket holes. It may be necessary to adjust the alignment of
the pins slightly.
d) Gently press the EPROM into its socket.
e) Inspect the EPROM to make sure that each lead pin is seated straight into
the socket and not bent under the body of the EPROM.
f) Place the old EPROM (older version) into the anti-static bag in which the
new EPROM had arrived.

4.8 Re-install the CPU board and cover

a) Replace the CPU board assembly top shield. Securely fasten the four
screws on shield.
b) Reinstall the CPU board into the TDIX unit by reversing the procedure
described earlier.
c) Reinstall the TDXnet cover starting with the front of the cover (the end with
the connector holes). Make sure that all connectors on front cover fit
cleanly through the connector openings on the cover. Do not force the
cover over the connectors.
d) Before tightening the cover, examine the front of the cover edge to insure
that the cover meets the chassis evenly. Tighten the screws near the
connectors first. Do not over tighten the screws as it may strip the plastic
threads.
e) You may remove the disposable wrist strap at this time.
f) Replace the cables on the front of the TDXnet.

4.9 Reconnect and start the TDXnet

WARNING
High voltage present. Contact with exposed wires or terminals can cause
shock, burns, or death.
Remove power before attaching or disconnecting power cable leads.

a) Insure the power source to the TDXnet is not powered.

b) Access the power supply base as described in section 4.2.
c) Reconnect power to the TDXnet.
d) Secure the power supply lid and close the TDXnet as described in section
4.2.
e) Reapply power to the TDXnet.
f) After the TDXnet finishes its self-test, the LEDs will begin to sequence.
Verify the red CPU LED is NOT illuminated except when sequencing. If the
red CPU LED is ON or the lights do not sequence, you may have installed
the EPROM incorrectly.
