Mary, the Icon of a New Year

“The Human Person,
BRUSHING the foreseers and the superstitious the Heart of Peace”
aside, there is nothing better than the contemplation
of Mary, the Mother of God, at the onset of a new
year. This, of course, may not sound very
comfortable with those who are in the work of
ecumenism and those sensitive, if afraid, of anything
that smacks of a further divide among Christians.
Fertility is the anthropological sense of a woman
in gestation. Which was why, in natural religions,
this image always finds prominence in agricultural
communities longing for a bountiful harvest. In
Christianity, the icon of Mary gestating the Son God
goes far beyond the anthropological significance.
It typifies a Pauline groaning (Cf. Rom 8) for the
birth of the Son who will restore all things that have
been squandered by a sinful nature.
But Christians of today would be satisfied and
settle for an icon of a pig, a rat or even a monkey.
And that’s all it takes for a happy New Year. Or so
it seems.
