Tomaketheoillampyouneedsomeformofheatresistant,nonflammable
containertokeeptheoilin.Ipreferglassasyoucanseehowmuchoilisinit
andbyhavinganarrowneckitiseasiertosupportthewick.Forfuelusedcheap
rapeseedoilbutanycookingoilwillwork.Fatswillworkbutarehardertouseas

youwillhavetomeltthefattogetitintothecontainerandplacethewickintoit.

Lampblackisblackpigmentandisverysimpletoturnintoaninkasitdoesnot
needfurthergrinding.
ThesimplestinkthatcanbemadefromitisIndianink.Thisismadebymixing
thelampblackwithatinyamountofalcohol,e.g.vodka,thenaddtothispastea
mixofwaterinwhichgumArabichasbeendissolved.Thethicknessoftheink
dependsontheamountofgumArabicused.Itproducesaverydarkblackand
shouldnotfadeatall,theonlywaytheinkmightnotlastisifitisnotsufficiently
absorbedbythepaper.
Lampblackcanalsobeusedasapigmentandusedtomakeoilpaint.

Step5:Refining
Dependingonyourflametherewillbeotherthingsmixedwiththecarboninthe
lampblack.Thesecanadverselyaffectitespeciallyifthereisanyunburntoils
leftinit,thiscanmakeitoilyandclumptogether.Toimprovethelampblackit
needstobecalcined,thisinvolvesheatingitawayfromair.
TodothisItookmylampblackinaglassbottleandcompressedittoreduceits
surfaceareaandthenheateditwithablowtorchuntilthelampblackwasredhot.
IdidthisinthesmallglassbottleIwasstoringitinastheglassisborosilicate
glassandsocouldwithstandtheheatofablowtorch.Thiswillimprovethe
qualityofthelampblackbutbecarefultokeepitssurfaceareatoaminimum
whenheatingasifincontactwithairsomecanburn.

I'mnotexactlysurebutIthinkitwasaround1andahalfto2
hours.Thegoodthingisifyousetitupwellyoucanleaveitreasonably
unattendedifitisn'tnearanyflammablethings.
