About us
History

West-Trak was established in 1993 on the West Coast of the

South Island, with the intention of specializing in a range of
Ground Engaging Tools. As the business grew, Undercarriage
parts became an integral division in 2004 and large stocks were
added so we could become a one stop shop with all wear parts
for ground engaging components and tracked machinery.
From the start regular contact was made with customers through
face to face meeting and written communications. Company staff
listened carefully to customers needs and learnt how to educate
them on matters relating to product technology, production,
metallurgy, wear and abrasion characteristics, so as to maximize
on site machine productivity.
West-Trak set up efficient supply arrangements with
international suppliers who control the finest foundries and
forging factories in the world. Steady growth in our nationwide
sales led us to an increase in facilities and staff, with branch
offices opening in Tauranga 1994 and Auckland in 2008.

Development of Ground Engaging Tools

New Zealand has a very wide range of machines working in

different industries such as Mining, Quarrying, Earthmoving,

A large range of Wear protection products are stocked for all
types of machinery involved in contact with the earth, including,

INNOVATION SERVICE

0800 654 323

West-Trak offers fresh ideas to repair and rebuild buckets and

blades. Replaceable wear parts can be bolt on or pin on for faster
on site changes. This technology reduces downtime in the field,
saving costs for the operator.

The Earthmoving Engineers First Choice
Most pins used in earthmoving equipment by original manufacturers are induction hardened
K1045
TOUGHNESS - The ability to resist breakage is best produced by Induction hardening which

results in much higher shear strength, higher tensile and yeild strength than in

normalised 4140 Shaft
SURFACE HARDNESS - The ability to resist wear by abrasion is produced to greatest depths by

Induction hardening to an optimum 58 Rockwell C (625 Brinell) at which

hardness we can expect K1045 to outlast normalised 4140 by 4 times. We do
not recommend surfaces hardness over 60 HRC which is (file hard) for pins in a
heavy impact application

Tip Quality Information
Hardness
The hardness of steel depends almost exclusively on its carbon content, provided that it is
submitted to an efficacious hardening process.
MTG Steels guarantee a high level of hardness resulting from a well studied composition and a
specific heat treatment specially developed by MTG.
Toughness
This is the deformation capacity before breakage. It is a mechanical term used in several contexts;
in the broadest sense it is a measure of a materials capacity to absorb energy before it breaks.
This absorption of energy always takes place at the expense of a plastic deformation, and
consequently, toughness is also a materials plastic deformation capacity.
MTG Steels are rugged steels that guarantee the parts will not break and wear less in high impact
situations.
Degree of refinement
All steels contain, to a greater or lesser extent, undesirable elements in the form of inclusions that
interrupt the mass of the steel and weaken the internal bonding forces, which has an important
effect on the toughness and ductility of the part.
The extreme toughness of MTG Steels is guaranteed by their excellent degree of refinement, which
gives rise to a low level of inclusions or impurities and consequently increases the homogeneity of
the internal structure of the steel and its toughness.
MTG Steels, the cleanest in terms of impurities in the wear material market, achieve a perfect
equilibrium of toughness and hardness, even in large section parts, which usually have to meet
high demands.
MTG Steels provide the best combination of hardness and toughness, and therefore maximum
wear resistance for public work and mining applications.

CAT Style Ripper Teeth
The extreme toughness of MTG Steels is guaranteed by their excellent degree of refinement, which gives
rise to a low level of inclusions or impurities and consequently increases the homogenity of the internal
structure of the steel and its toughness
MTG Steels, the cleanest in terms of impurities in the wear material market, achieve a perfect equilibrium
of toughness and hardness, even in large section parts, which usually have to meet high demands
MTG Steels provide the best combination of hardness and toughness, and therefore offering maximum
wear resistance and less breakage for public work and mining applications
( see page 70-71 for more steel quality information )

Resistance

The new range of MTG ripper teeth adaptable to the

Caterpillar system guarantee greater resistance in
adverse conditions.
Ripper teeth are always subject to extreme conditions
because of the type of work they carry out.
The new MTG ripper teeth adaptable to the Caterpillar
system are resistant to breakage since they have been
reinforced in areas where traditional design ripper teeth
are more sensitive.
The use of the new MET 71
steels, with fewer impurities and
inclusions, in the manufacture
of the new MTG ripper teeth
provides increased equilibrium
between hardness and
toughness thus increasing the
service life of the tooth.

Penetration

Effective self-sharpening
One of the outstanding novelties in the design of the
new MTG ripper teeth is the creation of the sprue at
the bottom of the tooth. This sprue makes it possible
to maintain a constant penetration profile, preventing
material dulling and increasing tooth effectiveness.
Penetrating and constant profile
The use of the sprue makes it possible to maintain a
penetrating profile throughout the tooths service life.

Shot of the sprue

the new MTG ripper
teeth

Performance & Control

Durability

During the ripping process, the stress that the teeth are
subjected to give rise to considerable wear in a short
period of time.
The design of the new MTG ripper teeth has optimised
material distribution in areas subjected to continuous
wear through contact with the terrain.
This characteristic lends the teeth greater life in all
types of terrain.
Reinforced collar

Reinforced
support points

More ripped ground

The design of the new MTG ripper teeth with an
extremely flat and wide tip, facilitates penetration
during the ripping process and enhances the
effectiveness of the tooth, since the material is opened
up wider. In other words, it rips a greater area of
material in less time, thereby saving more time.
Control over the machine
The greater self-sharpening of the MTG ripper teeth,
the smaller friction section created (which leads directly
to the greater penetration). This reduces the risk of
breakage making these new teeth the best allies for
operators when facing any type of hard material.
The new MTG ripper teeth provide the driver with
greater control over the machine and consequently
greater economic benefit and profitability.

A.R.M (Abrasion Resistant Material)

Abrasion Resistant Material is especially suited for high abrasion, low impact applications like
gravel stock pile loading, floor cleaning, the mining industry, or any other application that is
high wear

This product can be applied to any area affected by wear including, weld in edges, bolt on
cutting edges, heel plates, wear plates, bucket teeth and adapters

The life expectancy is approximately 3-5 times greater than standard edges, depending on
how much A.R.M is applied and the conditions the product is working in

The process embeds solid tungsten carbide particles in a matrix of molten weld and parent
metal forming a weld bead of about 1-2cm wide, 5mm high and 3-5mm deep into original
steel surface
Refer to Applied Products section on page 145 for more details

Bucket Protection
Bucket Liners
Due to constant friction of abrasive materials flowing in and out of the bucket, causes the
bucket floor to wear very thin which in turn, weakens the bucket structure

To reduce internal wear on the bucket floor, it is recommended to have a bucket liner, which
400/500 grade Abrasion Resistant steel or Chromium Carbide (C/C) Clad Plate is suited.
The C/C Clad plate retains a highly polished surface which is important for avoiding cross
contamination of gravels etc.

These plates can be rolled to suit the curve of any bucket

The most common thicknesses used are 6mm, 8mm, 10mm & 12mm

Grader
Grader Blade Information

With todays increased horsepower and weights of machines, thicker edges are
recommended wherever possible
Periodically moldboards should be checked for straightness, bent moldboards causes undue
stress on edges resulting in breakage
Periodically check plow bolt tightness as vibration can also cause edges to break
When bottom of moldboard is worn from excessive grader edge wear, it should be either built
up or replaced to give grader edges maximum support

Standard Grader Edge Moldboard Positions

Position moldboard so that the edge is as vertical as possible, keep consisent with good blade
operation

Tungsten Carbide Edge Moldboard Positions

When these angles are used, excessive down pressure is required to make
cut causing premature wear and undo stress on the blade

Who is MTG?

MTG is an independent company that

specializes in the manufacturing of
teeth, adapters, protectors and
locking devices for earth-moving
machinery.

MTG 50 years of
innovation

On-going tradition, experience,

research, development and
innovation have made MTG a
company of international renown.
They are moving into the future with
commitment to technological
innovation, quality products and
services.

What do they do?

They develop innovative products and

services which improve the
productivity of those who use
earthmoving machinery.

How do they do it?

Innovation in steel:
Longer-lasting, with less
breakages
The quality of a steel is conditioned
by its degree of refinement, that is to
say, the steels purity.
The control and careful selection of
raw materials, the preparation
process, and MTGs specialized heat
treatment guarantee

Fragile steel due to continuous

inclusions in the grain limit.

Quality steel. The inclusions are

globular with some sharp edges.
This steel does not break (it is
tough) although the inclusions
affect the characteristics of the
steel.

High-quality MTG Steel:

clean steel. The number and size of
inclusions, which are small and
round, has been reduced.

Steel Plate
Chromium Carbide Clad Plate

This plate is made of a very hard composition of alloysteels, bonded to mild steel backing in the
form of laminate, used for wear protection in extremely abrasive conditions. There are two grades
of C/C plate available. 2354 grade for high impact and 2360 MK2 grade for high abrasion applications
Life expectancy of all C/C plate is up to 10 times that of 400 grade abrasion plate
Plate thickness available is from 9mm - 24mm

- High Abrasion
- High Impact

We can profile cut this plate to any size or shape

It can be rolled to suit the contours of chutes, buckets, blades etc, or rolled into full circles and
cylinders
Countersunk inserts or threaded studs can be welded into the plates so it becomes bolt on and
easily replaced when worn out
C/C plate can be welded using low hydrogen electrodes or wire for the mild steel side and we
can supply hard stainless, nickel manganese for joining gaps on the hard surface side.

Steel Plate
Chromium Carbide Clad Plate

The purpose of this specialized plate is to allow large areas to be protectively hard
surfaced in the shortest possible time and with the least labour required
This technique minimizes the time needed to make repairs and keeps equipment
operating longer between repairs
Guaranteed to provide the most cost effective way to combat abrasive wear
This product retains a highly polished surface which is important for avoiding cross
contamination of gravels etc.

Plate Grades:
MK1 is the standard grade plate that is the recommended grade for high impact
applications like truck deck liners and performs better than opposition plate due to the even
and shallow weld penetration into the base plate.
MK2 is the recommended grade for severe wear areas with constant material flow like hoppers, shutes, bucket liners.
This plate has the highest percentage of evenly dispersed fine chromium carbides within the
weld deposit for ultimate wear resistance.
Weld penetration into the base metal in minimal (nominally 1mm), giving even hardness right
from the top of the wear surface to the interface.
Actual field test have shown a minimum wear ratios of 2 to 1 over standard MK1 grade plate.
Cutting & Fabrication service
C/C Plate is commonly cut with plasma arc
Plate can also be cut using arc air and abrasive cutting disc
All cutting should be from the mild steel side otherwise chromium and carbon will
contaminate the mild steel base and cause a brittle weld
All plate cut in house is done with our CNC plasma unit to ensure precision cutting
Recommended Minimum Rolling Radius
The hard surface side of plate will crack a little when under rolling tension which is
normal and this should not have any elongation effect so as to stretch the plate

Welding Procedures
Use low hydrogen electrode or mig wire for attaching the mild steel face of C/C plate
Where the above weld may come into contact with the hard facing layer, use a root weld
of stainless steel consumable
Stainless consumable should conform to Din Std A556-SG-X15 Cr Ni Mn 18.8.
A similar product is AWS A59 ER307. Product conforming to the Din Std is the best
choice where cycling temperatures are present.
For welding joins on the hard face side, use our hard facing electrodes of equivalent
grade to the plate. See page 146-150 for details

We do
not recommend surfaces hardness over 60 HRC which is (file hard) for pins in a
heavy impact application

component to extend its service life. Approximately 50% of the A.R.M dispersion is embedded
below the original steel surface resulting in a weld bead about 6-8mm above the surface.
This product is especially suited for high wear, low impact applications like gravel/sand stockpile
loading, floor cleanup, in the mining industry, and any other abrasive conditions.
This product is normally applied to cutting edges, skid plates, wear plates, bucket teeth, ripper
teeth, grader end bits, sidecutters, agricultural tynes, flails and bark hammers.
The life expectancy is up to 5 times greater than standard items without A.R.M, depending on
how much is applied and the conditions the product is working in.
A.R.M enhances wear patterns improving penetration and helping your machines do more work
per hour, which increases your productivity and therefore your profitability. Long wear life means
youll spend less time replacing wear parts, which helps to reduce total operating costs.

Hard Surfacing Electrodes

Tubular Alloy Cored Electrodes

Anti wear electrodes are available in tubular form, 6, 8, 12mm diameters. Both 8 and 12mm have
a swagged 6mm diameter aluminum stub attached to the gripping end of the electrode which
enables all antiwear electrodes to be used with any type of electrode holder.
Although the 12mm diameter may seem a rather large diameter electrode, particularly if
compared to solid core manual hard facing electrodes, it is worth noting that the tubular
electrodes require less than half the amperage to that of a similar sized solid core product.
Flux Coating
The special flux coating makes these rods extremely versatile. The 12mm diameter may be
applied with the amperages as low as 195 amps and for rapid deposition as high as 440 amps.
Weld Bead Widths
The same 12mm electrode can be deposited on Plate edges in narrow 5mm beads without the
edge burning and gives very low dilution of the substrate. Alternatively the 12mm diameter
electrode can be used for wide smooth deposits 50-75mm wide by weaving a similar width to
that required.
Multilayers
When multi layers are required, no chipping of slag covering is needed, as little or no residual
slag occurs. The metal recovery from the hard facing electrodes is extremely high and with the
12mm diameter there are only four stub discards for each kg of electrodes.

Hard Surfacing Electrodes
Easy To Apply
Hard facing electrodes are the easiest of electrodes to apply as no special skills are required to
obtain first class results. Arc length is not critical. Longer arc length, say 10-12mm, gives a soft
spray type of metal transfer with a smooth finish.
Heterogeneous Deposits
Deposits are mostly heterogeneous; that is carbide particles in a tough, less hard matrix. This
deposit combination gives alloys with the dual value of high abrasion resistance as well as a good
impact resistance.
AC or DC
These electrodes may be applied with either AC or DC current. A full range of grades from
Manganese Build up types to Tungsten carbide grades is available.
Electrode Selection
A study of a part to be treated and the form of wear generation is important in making the
correct electrode grade and size selection. On large parts the larger diameter electrodes should
be used for greater deposit control at faster rates and lower labour costs.
The 6mm diameter electrode may also seem large when compared to smaller solid core
electrodes, however, when it is realized these tubular electrodes may be deposited at as low as
70 amps and easily used for overhead and vertical deposits (a rare feature for iron based
electrodes) a clearer understanding of the unique characteristic of the hard facing rage is more
easily appreciated.
High Quality
The high quality of these electrodes ensures the best results every time; they are internationally
regarded as equal to the best available anywhere.
Moisture Resistant Flux Coating
Incidentally the flux coating is totally moisture resistant. The coating has an infinite storage life
and there is absolutely no moisture pickup which is a problem with so many other manual
electrodes. The tubular construction of the electrodes permits extremely high alloy
concentrations and ensures alloy enriched deposits at all times.
Product Selection
When compared to similar grades of small diameter alloy cored wires the electrodes, due to
lower dilution rates and extremely high ally concentrations, often give a service life improvement
in excess of 300%. Comparative testing shows a swing back from smaller diameter wire to the
anti wear hard facing electrodes offering big savings in labour and production results.
Packing
Electrodes are packed in cartons of 5kg or can be sold separately.
6mm = 55x rods per 5kg, 8mm = 35x rods per 5kg, 12mm = 18x rods per 5kg.

Grouser Shoes

The wide variety of working conditions makes choosing the right shoe very important. A good
rule is to select the narrowest shoe that provides adequate floatation. Shoes that are too
wide will loosen, bend and crack more easily. They require more power to turn, and affect
manoeuverability
Shoes of the correct width will give maximum performance and the lowest possible stress on
the entire track system
All our shoes are manufactured to OEM standards
We offer the following range of Grouser Shoe styles available to suit all makes and models of
Excavators and Dozers
Single Bar Grousers

An all purpose shoe recommended for Dozers

Gives the best penetration and traction, resists wear and bending
Moderate Service shoes are available for low to medium abrasion
and impact applications
Extreme Service (ESS) shoes are available for High impact and
abrasion applilcations offering approximately 20% more wear life
than the respective Moderate Service shoe

Double Bar Grousers

Well suited for Forestry and heavy rock applications on excavators

Provides more strength, penetration and traction than triple bar shoes
These are all (ESS) Extreme Service Shoes

Triple Bar Grousers

A standard general purpose shoe for excavators that provides moderate

traction
Recommended for applications that require better turning capability
and less ground disturbance

Apex Swampy Shoes

Self cleaning, Low Ground Pressure (LGP) shoes for soft underfoot
conditions on Dozers and Excavators
Should not be used in high impact or abrasive conditions
They run separate from one another as they move around the
sprocket and idler, allowing dirt and debris to fall out

Trouble Shooting & Solutions

Grouser Shoes

The most important wear is the relative height of the grouser

to the top of the shoes plate. A depth gauge is used to
measure this
Other types of wear are not usual and are discussed to give a
complete picture of the functioning parts of the chain

Accelerated wear of overlapping surfaces

This is normally caused by a snaking chain and is eliminated
when using lubricated chains

Severe wear of the end of the grouser

This is especially noticeable on single grousers and usually due
to choosing too large a shoe for the type of ground on which
the tractor is operating. The use of a narrower shoe will
eliminate this problem

Bending and cracking

This is due to an excessive load for the resistance the shoe
is capable of tolerating. The use of smaller shoes or the fitting
of SUPER shoes will assist

Enlarged bolt holes

This is caused by relative movement between the chain and
shoe due to low bolt torque or machine motion
Reduced shoe size or the use of shoes with less penetration
(i.e. double or triple grousers) and the accurate control of
the bolt torque will improve the situation. Following procedure
must be used to tighten track bolts

Track Links/Rails

To measure the wear use a depth gauge and measure the

depth from the bottom of the grouser to link running surface.
Other types of wear are exposed in the following paragraphs

Excessive side rail wear

Besides the operational condition, hilly areas, steep ground or
frequent sudden turns, this wear could be caused by
misalignment or excessive chain snakiness

Indentations on internal surface of rail

This is caused by the sprocket teeth rubbing on the inside of
the link because of sloping ground, mis-aligned sprocket and
chain or a severely bent track chain. Adjust chain and check
alignment

Pin boss side wear

Caused by contact with the outside flange of the rollers.
Should it occur before 100 percent of the link wear then the
rollers are beyond their useful life and should be replaced

Excessive face wear

This wear is caused by snaking of the joints because of the
abrasiveness of the ground
The use of chain guards or fitting of lubricated chains can
reduce this wear

Track Links/Rails

Pin boss wear by guards

This results from excessive snakiness of the chain due to
sprocket and roller misalignment or uneven roller wear
Check sprocket alignment and rotate some rollers

Rail corners gouged

Caused by severe shock loads usually transmitted by the rollers
to the links
Besides operating conditions (heavy work, speed, weight and
power of machine) the situation can be aggravated by the size
of the shoes and/or track tension. If this phenomenon affects
less than 30 percent of the rails surface, it can be considered
to have aesthetic value only and of no consequence to the life of
the undercarriage
A remedy could be to reduce the shoe size and/or adjust the
chain tension

Cracks or breakages of the most stressed areas

Most breakages are caused by tortional stress transmitted to
the link structure when the machine is used in a severe
application
In order to reduce this failure, narrower shoes can be used and
the chain tension regularly adjusted

Bushing counterbore and pin boss deformation

If this is not due to incorrect tooling being used when
assembling or disassembling the chain, then it is caused by
bending stresses in the pins and bushes.
Also here, this problem can be reduced by fitting smaller shoes
and by having the correct chain tension
Note: lubricated chains reduce this problem

Internal Pins & Bushings

Pin and bushing internal wear is not applicable for lubricated

chains. As this wear cannot be visually observed, measurement
is made of the elongation of the chain pitch or number of
pitches. A standard steel tape can be used.
Particular wear patterns are discussed in the following
paragraphs

Worn pin end

Besides the obvious factor of hillside operation and uneven
ground, this type of wear is caused by incorrect chain tension
and roller wear
If chain elongation has not reached the limit then adjust chain
tension and rotate some rollers
If this pattern of wear starts immediately after installing a new
undercarriage then careful check of the installation of the rock
guards is called for

Loose pins
If there is no obvious fault i.e., incorrect assembly or
disassembly, then this can be caused by bending stresses
during heavy operation of the tractor
To eliminate this, replace any worn shoes, check bolt tension
and/or fit smaller shoes

Pin breakages
Main cause of this failure is extreme shock or high static loads
which occur when the machine works on rocky ground
and/or when material packs in the sprocket causing extreme
tension on the track chain

External Bushings

Wear is caused at the point of contact between the bushing

and the sprocket tooth. To measure this wear use a small
outside calliper
This method changes for lubricated chain
The following other wear patterns may be noted

Cracking or breaking of surfaces in contact with sprocket

Due to excessive wear either externally or internally allowing
the bush to break
It could also be due to heavy working conditions or packing
sprockets. To reduce this effect, check and adjust chain
tension and to eliminate it completely, keep wear limits below
100 percent

Lubricated Chains

These chains use the same links as the standard chains so

the evaluation remains unchanged. As no internal wear occurs,
there is no need for any evaluation of wear on this part of the
chain
The only change is with the external bushing wear. As there
is no internal wear, the bushing wears evenly and should be
measured in the centre of the wear area
The safest way to measure external wear is to evaluate the
distance from the underside of the shoe (top of link) to the
centre of the wear area on the bushing
A depth gauge is used (same tool used for link wear)
Other points of wear are described in the following paragraphs
SHOE SURFACE / SUPERFICIE INTERNA SUOLA

Pin galling
This is due to interference between the pin and bushing at
points under the bushing press fit contact area and is caused
by the pins bending under load
This effect is of no consequence other than aesthetically and
the pin can be reused either in lubrication or standard chains

Pin spalling
All spalling is due to large bending stresses as aresult of high
load due to heavy working conditions
Besides the application of the tractor, this can be caused by
excessive chain tension due to build up and packing
Adjust the chain correctly and protect against packing of rocky
material between chain and sprocket

Track Rollers

The tread wear of the roller is most important and is measured

on the roller diameter. The most suitable tool is a large outside
calliper. It is often difficult to measure the rollers on the
machine but to be sure the real diameter has been measured,
the calliper should slide across the outside diameter of the
roller.
The correct measurement is to take the least diameter of
either tread on the roller which will be the one with the highest
wear. Because of the great difficulty in measuring the rollers
on the machine it is usually sufficient to measure the front
(nearest idler) and back (nearest sprocket) roller as the
greatest wear occurs at these two points due to the rocking
action of the machine
Besides the normal wear patterns, additional types of wear
should be considered

Excessive side flange wear

Besides operational conditions, this wear can be caused by
misalignment of excessive slackness of the chain
If the rollers have not reached their wear limit, then adjust the
chain tension and rotate some of the rollers
It should be noted that double flange rollers have a longer life
and the correct sequence of double and single flange rollers is
important
If longer life is required due to the operating conditions, then
more double flange rollers can be fitted
The pictures are for indication purposes only. We can assist
you with the correct order of rollers for your machine

Top flange deformation with separation of material

This is caused by contact of the link pin boss or due to the
chain sliding over the flanges because of exceptional snaking
of the chain. If the chain is not completely worn out, adjust the
chain tension, re-align the rollers and re-position track guide
rails

Carrier Rollers

The normal wear condition can be measured as for the bottom

rollers. Other wear patterns should be analysed in the
following paragraphs

Excessive flange sidewear

This can be caused by hillside operation, special offset grousers
and incorrect alignment
To increase the roller life, align carrier rollers with idler and
sprocket and rotate rollers if more than one are fitted to the
machine

Flat spots slash irregular wear

This is usually caused by material packing under the top carrier
and restricting its rotation
Rollers should be cleaned and all material should be removed
from the surrounding area

Trouble Shooting & Solutions

Radial tread wear is the most important factor. The easiest

method of measuring tread wear is to measure the depth of
the tread from the centre of the idler.
It must however be confirmed that the centre rim has not been
changed from the original diameter by abnormal wear or
excessive build-up. Any abnormal or unusual wear will be
obvious after inspection

Excessive flange sidewear

The main factors are:

1) soil conditions
2) hillside operations
3) excessive turning

Other factors influencing side wear are:

1) roller alignment
2) chain tension
3) tread conditions

To reduce side wear to a minimum, make sure the correct

chain tension is used and the idler is correctly aligned in the
track frame

Top flange wear

Usually caused by material packing under the rail or excessive
idler tread wear. To eliminate this make sure that the chain is
correctly adjusted

Trouble Shooting & Solutions

Tread cracking and spalding

This can be caused by high dynamic loads due to heavy
working conditions or by excessive wear of the idler
The condition of the chain can also contribute to the effect
Unfortunately the factors which lead to the breakdown of the
idler can not be controlled and therefore the only remedy will be
not to exceed the wear limits of the idler or any of the
undercarriage components

Sprockets & Segments

reverse drive
side wear

forward drive
side wear
radial wear

Sprocket wear measurement is one of the most difficult to take. In fact, under normal conditions
of work, the wear occurs in such a way that no trace of the original toothing remains as a valid
reference to base upon for measuring the wear
In consequence it is not possible to give exact data and for any evaluation, it is always necessary
to refer to an unused sprocket of the same type
As a general rule you can say that the sprocket has to be replaced or rerimmed when the wear
line reaches the limits as outlined in the figure above
Due to the fact that the wear is never even, the point where there is major wear must be
considered
Wanting to convert percentage wise the extent of maximum wear A for each sprocket one must
consider 0.03 of the chain pitch to which the sprocket is mounted, i.e. from 3.7mm for the
smallest sprocket to 8mm for the biggest sprocket

Helpful Hints
Fitting Chains to Excavators the correct way
The open end of the chain (not the master link) goes under the rollers and over the sprocket first
or the fronts of the shoes bend down on top of the chain facing the idler
Fitting Dozer Chains the correct way
With dozer type single bar shoes, the lug bar goes closest to the front of machine when looking at
the top of the chains
Chains Bunching Up
This is often caused by the working conditions or machine sitting stationary for long periods where
moisture can get in and cause seizure

This can be caused by putting bent grouser shoes onto new chains in a different order than they
came off
Especially on wider shoes, 700, 800, 900mm they will twist and bend easier than narrow ones

Chains Jumping on the Sprockets

If the chains are slipping or jumping on the sprockets it can mean the sprockets are very worn. If
the chains and sprockets are new, it may be the track adjuster spring is broken causing it to retract
easily loosening the chain tension
Some sprockets are off set and will only fit one way; they could be on incorrectly and running into
the side rails of the chains and not in the centre
Worn track roller flanges can cause the chain to waver out to the side and become miss aligned
with the sprocket. Track guards will help to prevent this
Sprockets could be wrong pitch for the chains or vice versa
Grouser Shoes
Always use the narrowest shoe possible
The wider the shoes the less life you will get out of the chains
Wide shoes are only recommended for soft soil and swamp terrain
Always grind paint, scale or surface or surface rust off shoes when fitting. Shoe and chain must be
metal to metal contact, otherwise the bolts will become loose and grousers will fall off
Mud holes in shoes are to stop mud and dirt compacting in the chain under the plates. When the
chain passes around the sprocket, the sprocket teeth will push the dirt out. Very necessary in Coal,
muddy, swampy and landfill conditions
Track Rollers
Mixing new and old rollers can overload the new ones as they sit higher than the worn ones,
therefore taking a lot of extra weight
If not replacing all new bottom rollers, it is recommended to fit the better half on one side and all
new ones on the otherside. This keeps even pressure on each roller without overloading them
When replacing new rollers, do not travel long distances without resting the machine as rollers
could overheat and seize. Stop every 4-5 minutes and go the opposite direction a little to help
circulate oil. This is standard precaution only for the first 100 hours
