This article talks about how diabetic retinopathy screening increases to 90% in

Kuala Lumpur. The author is informative on the topic and highlight on how the
problem was solved.
Firstly, most of us knows that diabetes causes blindness and many people are
still going blind. This is because people with diabetic retinopathy only goes to a
specialist when they have problems seeing, but the narrowing is already
happening before that. High blood sugar in uncontrolled diabetes will damage
the small vessels within the eye. People who are suffering from this problem will
go blind if left unchecked and treated properly.
Amidst that, diabetic retinopathy should be checked at least once a year. In
Seremban, a lot of diabetics did not get proper check-ups annually in local
clinics. Therefore, Doctor Kewaljit propose a diabetic retinopathy screening
programme for his clinics and was later on approved and started in Klinik
Kesihatan Jinjang. Moreover, in order to make this programme successful, nurses
and medical assistants should know how to operate a specific camera called
fundus camera to be able to treat the patients. So, Dr Kewaljit helped to train
medical staff in using the camera and assessing the photos.
Furthermore, the programme made an increased to 90% by partnership between
private and public medical centres. At first, only 20% of diabetic patients. Then it
went up to 40% the next year from education and promotion. Finally, with the
support of Lions Club and CIMB foundation, it was resulted in around 90% in the
area getting their eyes examined last year.
I agree with the articles, as we Malaysian should regularly checked for our
health. Diabetes is a really serious ill, as it can lead to another illness such as
blindness (Diabetic Retinopathy). The main factor for this illness are the foods
that we consumed daily. Ones who cannot control their diet can easily get
diabetes. So to avoid it, we need to control our diet and start a healthy life such
as exercising thrice a week. We also need to have a regular medical check-up
from a professional doctor that can help us with our daily routines. By developing
the program that can help the diabetic retinopathys patients, it can reduce the
percentage of people that have diabetic problems. As it aware people about what
diabetes can lead too.
To recapitulate, I reaffirm my point that this illness is chronic and need to be
taken seriously by specific organization. Nevertheless, I firmly believe by doing
this program is not the only way to alert people about this illness, as there are
many ways to prevent this chronic illness. As a saying, preventing is better than
curing.
