Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction
Energy is a vital factor in the progress of technology;
energy can be used in transportation, robotics, machineries,
and etc. Electricity, which is a type of energy, cannot be
accessed by all people. The researchers aim to know the
effectiveness

of

an

urban

hydroelectric

generator.

The

researchers chose this study because electricity is needed

by humans to survive in the computer age, but some people
could not afford it, so the researchers conducted a study to
make electricity more accessible to people. Hydropower is
the most common renewable energy in the world and 16.3% of
the worlds electricity is generated by hydropower.

An

[1]

70%

urban

hydroelectric generator is a hydroelectric generator placed

in urban areas for most of the hydroelectric generators are
usually in rural areas. An urban hydroelectric generator is
different from other hydroelectric generators because it
uses the surroundings of an urban area effectively.

Urban hydroelectric generators are planned to be put in

sewers, for it is usually the only stream of water inside
urban areas. The Hoover Dam can produce 4 billion kilowatthours of hydroelectric power each year for use in Nevada,
Arizona, and California; that is enough to serve 1.3 million
people.

Statement of the Problem

The study is aimed to determine the feasibility of a

hydroelectric generator that uses the surroundings of an
urban

area

to

bring

out

the

full

efficiency

of

hydroelectric generator.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following

questions:
1. Will the urban hydroelectric generator work?
2. Will the urban hydroelectric generator generate the
needed amount of electricity?
3. Will the hydroelectric generator be able to withstand
the amount of water dropping?
Significance of the Study
This study is aimed to determine the feasibility of an
urban hydroelectric generator. The result of this study can
be beneficial to the electrical industries, for it can help
them produce more electricity and the electricity would be
more accessible to them for they are usually in the urban
areas and more electricity would cost less, so it could help
the people who cannot afford electricity.
Scope and Delimitation
The study is aimed to maximize the use of urban areas
using hydroelectric generator. The researchers would first
use

small-scale

efficiency.

its

Hydroelectric- pertaining to the generation and distribution

of electricity derived from the energy of falling water or
any other hydraulic source.

Hydropower- electricity produced from machines that are run

by moving water.

Energy- the capacity for vigorous activity or an adequate/

abundant amount of such power.

Urban- characteristics of or accustomed to cities or living

in a city.

Generator- a machine that converts one form of energy into

another,

especially

mechanical

energy

into

electrical

energy, and as a dynamo, or electrical energy into sound, as

an acoustic generator.
