INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE

Alright, how could we learn about literature in English

department ? yeahh beside include to art,

literature is

also a part of language. So, will be nice when we learn art and
language in same time , happy reading

What is literature ?

Etymologically, the Latin word litteratura is derived

from littera (letter), which is the smallest element of
alphabetical writing. The word text is related to textile and
can be translated as fabric : just as single threads form a

fabric,

so

words and sentences

form

meaningful

and

coherent text.
To explain the definition of literature, we needs a long
time for discuss it. A piece of literature is different from other
kind of work because it doesnt claim to be enjoyed by only
particular group of reads, but to all men and women as men
and

women.

Literary

work

not

only

simply

to

import

knowledge, but it also gives aesthetic satisfaction by the way

how it presents its message.
We deal with literature primarily because it tells about
human significance. A great book grows directing out of life
with large, close and fresh relations with life. Literature is vital
record of what people have seen, experienced, thought, and
felt about in life. Its an expression of life through the medium
of language.
The great impact behind literature may be grouped into
four different factors :
Firstly, its treated as tools of self-expressions to actualize
someones self.
Secondly, its a tool to express curiosity of peoples life and
what they are doing since peoples life and what they do are
always interesting to know.
Thirdly, certain people have tendency to get n touch or have
interest in the world of reality in which they live in and the
existence of the world of imagination which they conjure into
existence.

Fourthly, people may also have interest in the form of that

work of literature itself.

So, literature as an interpretation of life shaped and made

in the mind of interpreter. It leads to the role of the literature
as self-expression which includes different kinds of literary
works like poetry, which they are written from personal point
of view; and also the literature of artistic and literary criticism.
We also have literature in which, the writer, instead of going
down into himself, goes out of external human life and activity;
and they includes the epic, the romance in verse and prose,
the novel and the drama.

What is Prose ?

Prose is a literary expression not marked by rhyme or by

metrical regularity. It is the type of language used in novels,
short stories, articles, etc. its a long narrative story which
tells a story. A narrative tells a story by presenting events in
some logical or orderly way.

Works of narrative fictions

originate in the imagination of the author, not in history or

fact. Certainly some fictions-historical or autobiographical
fictions, for example, focus on real people and actual events,
but the way the characters interact and how the plot unfolds
are the authors invention.

Historically, long time before people read, most of them have

learned how narratives are structured. Once children can tell a
story, they also know how to exaggerate, how to add or delete
details, how to rearrange events and how to bend facts. In
other words, how to fictionalize a narrative to achieve a
desired effect.

How to conduct a good prose ?

Prose has intrinsic elements. The elements are needed to
conduct a good prose, they are :
1. Theme
Simply, theme is the meaning of the work. By theme we
mean the necessary implications of the whole work, not
separate part of a work.
Theme is the main idea of a work. The idea of the theme
can

be

differently

interpreted

depending

on

ones

background, faith, education, etc. it must be prepared to

defend our view in the form of critical analysis that will
relate

all

significant

aspects

of

work,

especially

character, events, and point of view in supporting our

interpretation of the storys theme. So, to conduct a good
prose, we have to choose right theme for a good prose.
From theme, we can conclude and take what the message
is contained in a prose.
2. Characterization
The relationship between plot and character is necessary.
Without character there would be no plot. For most

readers of fiction, the most interesting part of a story is

the character, in the fascinating traits of man and woman
whose experiences and adventures in life from the basis
of the plot of the work in which they appear.
3. Plot
Plot is the organization of incidents in a narrative or play.
The governing word in this definition is organization. Plot
is a carefully thought out plan in which all the events, the
actions, the reactions forward movement of the story. Plot
is an authors choice and arrangement of events in a
story. Plot also arranges events to produce suspense and
surprise. Plot can be arranged base on 3 kinds, are:
a. Base on the chronology, it is called linear chronology
b. Base on causality, it is well-known causal chronology
c. Base on theme of story, it is thematic chronology
4. Setting
Setting is the background .setting is a term in its broader
sense, encompasses both the physical locale that frames
the action and the time of day or year, the climatic
conditions and the historical period during which the
actions take place. Setting can be divided to be 3

main

elements :
a. Place : where the story or action (in a prose) happen
b. Time : when the story or action (in a prose) happen
c. Social : how about the historical and geographical
setting contribute to richness of the story.
5. Point of view

Point of view in a prose can give us not only the sense of

being there that limited camera focus can, but it can give
us, as the camera cant, the sequence of thoughts,
emotions in the beholder.
There are some different ways of telling story, they are :
a. Autobiographical method (character narrator)
This method believes that the story is told in the first
person, I. the person relating the story is the one who
has experienced or witnessed or heard about the
events.
b. Eye-of-God method
This is very convenient name given to the method used
by most modern writers in their prose (works). The
writer cant be an actual person. Its for their reason
that the name Eye-of-God method has been given to
this way of writing a prose. And etc.
