SISTEMAS DE CERTIFICACIN
LEED V4

Water Efficiency

Estructura LEED
Cada categora tiene prerrequisitos y crditos:
Prerrequisitos:
Son obligatorios; al no cumplirse con
alguno no es posible lograr la
certificacin.
No otorgan puntos.
Crditos:

a. The Campus Program is used for certifying multiple buildings if they are adjacent to each other.
b. The Campus Program can be used for projects not necessarily uniform in design or operations but
located on a single campus location.
c. The LEED Volume Program is always used for certifying more than one building.
d. The Neighborhood Development rating system would be used to streamline the documentation process.
Answer: B. LEED volume is for prototype-based projects, usually in different areas. Campus is for
projects located on a single campus. A big university with many satellite schools building the same
classroom in multiple, distant locations would be LEED Volume. A school classification doesn't
automatically indicate a Campus Program.

Answer: B The ISO 14000 product oriented standards include Environmental Labels and Declaration, Life
Cycle Assessment, and Design for Environment. These standards are intended to be applicable for
assessing the environmental performance of products and services as well as providing guidance on
improving their environmental performance. The ISO 14021 series standards, Environmental Labels and
Declaration, are communication tools that convey information on environmental aspects of a product or
service to the market. These standards are used for recycled materials to label their pre and/or post
consumer content.

9. If a building owner selected a project site in an existing community with proximity to existing
utility lines and street networks, in which of the following ways would it save on project costs?
a.
b.
c.

Eutrophication
Decreased energy performance
Increased heat islands
Increased potable water use
Answer: A Eutrophication is the ecosystem response to the addition of artificial or natural substances,
such as nitrates and phosphates from fertilizers or sewage, to an aquatic system. Additional hardscapes
can contribute to eutrophication and harm aquatic ecosystems and species. Eutrophication is the process
by which a body of water acquires a high concentration of nutrients, especially phosphates and nitrates.
These typically promote excessive growth of algae. As the algae die and decompose, high levels of
organic matter and the decomposing organisms deplete the water of available oxygen, causing the death
of other organisms, such as fish. Eutrophication is a natural, slow-aging process for a water body, but
human activity greatly speeds up the process.
8. Which of the following can increase the heat island effect in urban areas? (Choose 2)

e.
Native plants
Turf grass
Annual flowers
Trees
Answer: A Native (or indigenous) plants are those that grow naturally in an area, or that have been in an
area for many years. Native plants require less water, fertilizer, and pest control. These plants can be
trees, shrubs, flowers, or grasses. Adaptive plants are non-native plants that perform well in the local
climate. Native and adaptive plants require less water, and are more disease resistant because they are
suited to the region's usual rainfall, soil, and temperature.
2. Which of the following is the appropriate way to document whether a bathroom sink qualifies
for an indoor water use reduction?
a.
b.
c.
d.
By occupancy calculations

7. Which of the following occupants would be classified as FTEs? (Choose 2)
a.
b.
c.
d.
A librarian
A delivery person
A cleaning person who only works in the evenings
A receptionist
Answer: A and D Delivery people would be considered visitors. If individuals only work in the evenings
then they are part-time workers, not full-time workers. Another way of posing this question is to ask who is
in the building full-time (40 hours per week)? A full-time equivalent (FTE) represents a regular building
occupant in a project building. An FTE of 1.0 means that the person is equivalent to a full-time worker,
while an FTE of 0.5 signals that the worker is only half-time. Transient occupants (visitors, guests), along
with Full Time Equivalents, are used when calculating reductions in water usage, and some alternative
transportation credits.
8. Which of the following are frequently considered types of blackwater? (Choose 2)

HFC-23
CFC-11
HCFC-22
NH3
Answer: B
CFC-11 is used in chillers for about 50% of existing buildings. Nowadays it is encouraged to replace
these systems with newer and more efficient systems that use more environmentally friendly refrigerants.
Doing so would save money in the long term.
4. What is the median payback period for the commissioning of existing buildings?
a.
b.
c.
d.
2.8 years
0.7 years
1.5 years
1 year
Answer: B
Commissioning can be expensive but compared to the savings it achieves over time, it's one of the best
investments a building owner can make. There are many studies that show the benefits of commissioning
with examples of installation errors that cost building owners thousands of dollars a year unnecessarily.
A study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found the following: 'For existing buildings, we
found median commissioning costs of $0.27/ft2, whole-building energy savings of 15%, and payback
times of 0.7 years. For new construction, median commissioning costs were $1.00/ft2 (0.6 % of total
construction costs), yielding a median payback time of 4.8 years (excluding quantified non-energy
impacts).
5. What is GWP as it relates to refrigerants?
a.
b.
c.
d.
6. When calculating building energy performance, what is included as process energy? (choose 3)
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
Walkway lighting
Desktop computer
Instant hot water heater
High efficient HVAC unit
Elevator
Washing machine
Answer: B, E, F
When calculating the Minimum Energy Performance of a building the energy calculations take into
account process and non-process energy. The best way to remember the difference is process energy
generally comes from equipment that is plugged into a wall outlet (it has a plug load). Examples of
process energy include:
Computers
Office equipment
Kitchen stoves
Kitchen refrigerators
Washers and dryers
Elevators and escalators (these don't have regular plugs, but are considered process energy for LEED)
Evapotranspiration
Commissioning
Cogeneration
Tertiary treatment
Answer: C
Combined heat and power (CHP) is an electricity generation technology, also known as cogeneration,
that recovers waste heat from the electric generation process to produce simultaneously other forms of
useful energy, such as usable heat or steam. On average, two-thirds of the input energy used to make
electricity is lost as waste heat. In contrast, CHP systems are capable of converting more than 70 % of
the fuel into usable energy.
8. With regards to refrigerants what is a natural conflict between the prevention of ozone depletion

taking which of the following actions?
a.

c.
d.
Cradle to cradle
Cradle to grave
Renewable
Passive
Answer: C
Cradle to cradle is a term used in life-cycle analysis to describe a material or product that is recycled into
a new product at the end of its useful life. Cradle to cradle is an example of a closed system.
