a. What is solid waste?
Solid waste is any garbage or sludge from discarded materials including solid, liquid
or semi-solid from consumer operations.
b. List and describe the 3 main types of wastes include examples of
sources of each
i. Municipal waste- waste consisting of everyday items usually
from homes, institutions ad small businesses
ii. Industrial waste- discarded materials from and manufacturing
process usually from factories or petroleum extraction
iii. Hazardous waste- waste that contains materials that could be
potentially harmful to human health and an be in the form of a
solid, liquid or gas usually from nuclear plants.
c. What are the top 3 components of municipal solid waste in the US
i. Three components of municipal solid waste in the US are paper,
yard trimmings, and plastics.
d. What is a sanitary landfill?
i. Define leachate
ii. What is the purpose of the compacted impermeable clay &
plastic liner
iii. What is the purpose of the granular drainage layer & leachate
collection pipes
e. What is NIMBY
f. What is incineration and how is it used to dispose of solid waste?
i. What are some advantages of incineration compared to straight
landfilling?

h. Landfilling and incineration are two ways of managing our solid waste.
