Intimacy of Companionship

Why did God create Eve for Adam?

First we need to understand Adam’s makeup: Genesis 2:4-7 – Adam is both natural and spiritual. Therefore
Adam has both natural and spiritual needs. For example: natural – eat, sleep, satisfy curiosity (through touch,
taste, etc.); spiritual – communion with God, emotional highs and lows, satisfy desires of heart.

Now all of Adam’s natural needs had been met the moment he opened his eyes, but what about the spiritual? –
Marriage is not about natural needs (although they are fulfilled in each other)

Genesis 2:18-24 – So although all natural needs are met Adam quickly realizes he’s very alone in the world
(this realization is not a natural feeling but a spiritual one).

VERY IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE

v18 – God picks your companion.
Why? Marriage is very difficult:
According to enrichment journal on the divorce rate in America:
The divorce rate in America for first marriage is 41%
The divorce rate in America for second marriage is 60%
The divorce rate in America for third marriage is 73% (Divorcerate.org)
Matthew 19:1-12 – Don’t rush into any relationship – not bf/gf, not engagement, not marriage. Be sure you
know the will of God.
Is marriage a good thing? Of course! – Proverbs 18:22

Christian dating should look like this – don’t touch each other, but get to know each other and determine if God
is agreeable with this relationship. Then get approval from parents – remember Genesis 2:24

When God has given you a mate:

Ephesians 5:22 (1 Peter 3:7) – husband has final say, but husband must live with wife and respect her! (v.23-
24)
v25-28 – Men must learn this lesson because God created marriage to be His example of His love for the
church. Genesis 3:8-9 – God addresses the man even for the initial sin of the woman. v10-12 – blame shift:
man’s enemy. Always looking for a scapegoat (consider attitude of prisoners – always innocent).

So then Adam is a type of Christ:

1. Adam is a representation of Christ. Eve is representative of the Church, the Bride of Christ.
2. God's design was for them to live in paradise and commune with Him. Jesus and His Bride, the Church,
will live in Heaven's paradise forever in God's presence.
3. Adam is accountable for the sin of his wife. Jesus chose to become sin for us, and suffer the
consequences of death, so that His Bride could be with Him.
4. Adam was put to sleep and Eve was formed out of a rib from his side. Jesus fell asleep (died) on the
cross, and as proof of His death He was pierced in the side. When He awoke (rose from the dead) the
church was born.

The two become one flesh:

Ephesians 5:29-33 – Take care of your wife (each other).
Bring back around to where we started – marriage was created to meet spiritual needs:
This is why it must be between a man and woman and chosen by God. He will complete the missing part of
you.
Man is not separate from woman – woman is glory of man. (1 Cor 11) – when proper companionship is
practiced (headship = God, Christ, Man, Woman, Angels) then proper worship can take place.
