- a shelf of bone divided into
two nearly equal fossae
- most prominent feature
-at dorsal border: thick, low
ridge
- at neck: thinner, wider
- at free border: slightly

just dorsal to vtrl angle
- middle 3rd: broad and
smooth
- less than 1/3: thickest part
- from cr to cd angles
- capped by a narrow band
of cartilage (live animal)
