CAMCHEC Riser Inspection

he Cameron CAMCHEC Riser Inspection

System is a revolutionary new approach for
non-intrusive inspection of marine drilling riser.
The CAMCHEC system allows riser to be inspected
on board the drilling vessel without removing
buoyancy and auxiliary lines. In addition, it provides
higher quality inspection data than conventional
inspection methods.

CAMCHEC Available Services

The CAMCHEC Riser Inspection System incorporates a number
of time-saving services. These services are available
individually or as a complete package and include:
Main body and auxiliary line cleaning.
Complete internal video inspection.
Visual, dye penetrant, mag particle and dimensional
examinations.
Advanced Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) weld
inspections.
Color/topographical wall thickness and corrosion survey.
Advanced ultrasonic inspections with digitally recorded
results in color and grayscale formats.
Application of corrosion inhibitors to riser inside diameter.

CAMCHEC Benefits
On-site inspection without removal of buoyancy and/or
auxiliary lines reduces downtime, and the possibility of
damage due to handling and shipping.
Complete inspection can be achieved without removing riser
coatings, saving valuable time.
CAMCHEC provides more detailed inspection results for wall
thickness surveys and TOFD weld inspections.

The CAMCHEC system utilizes a series of precision

tools to perform the most comprehensive riser
inspection in the industry. Each step is performed
along the entire length of the main riser tube and all
auxiliary lines. All data is transferred from the
inspection to a computer terminal, allowing
permanent digital storage for future comparison.

available for future comparisons.
Archived inspection results are easily retrieved.
More accurate inspection means early identification of future
repair requirements.

CAMCHEC Riser Risk Management Program

The CAMCHEC Riser Inspection System allows Cameron to
offer customers a comprehensive Riser Risk Management
Program to reduce costs and ensure the life of their drilling riser
systems.
Utilizing CAMCHEC data as a baseline, and comparing it to the
data from subsequent inspections, accurate trending can be
established with the following advantages to the customer:
Retirement dates for riser joints can be predicted, allowing
planned repair and/or replacement at the convenience of the
operator rather than unplanned shutdowns due to failure.
The data can ensure that riser joints are optimally deployed,
placing joints in the best condition in higher stress locations.
Since the digital data is referenced by riser serial number, the
movement of a riser joint from rig to rig can be tracked and
incorporated into the data bank for each new riser string.

Typical CAMCHEC Operations

The following are services available with the CAMCHEC
system. Each operation may be performed on the drilling rig
and can be used to inspect riser joints up to 100 feet in length.
The riser can be inspected with all buoyancy and auxiliary lines
still in place. In addition, the inspection can be performed
without removal of coatings from the riser tube. This eliminates
the need to remove the riser joints from the rig, saving time and
eliminating the possibility of damage during transport and
handling.

Once complete, the customer has a set of computer readouts on

all processes as well as graphical images of all inspections and a
thorough documentation of the inspection. The CAMCHEC
System offers a variety of software display options including a
grayscale data set, color amplitude scale and depth-to-color
format.
After all inspections are completed, the customer has
comprehensive data on repairs required and can make informed
decisions on maintenance scheduling.

Riser Cleaning
A stainless steel, spiral-wound brush mechanism
and the CAMCHEC Honing Tool are pulled
through the riser joint. The tool and brush are
rotated by a high speed motor. A high pressure
water spray is used to remove dirt, scale, loose
coating, dried well fluid, etc. along the entire
length of the riser joint.

Video Inspection
The CAMCHEC Video Inspection Camera is deployed
through the main riser tube first to perform a complete
internal video/visual examination. Imperfections to
within one millimeter are projected to a computer
monitor and the entire inspection is recorded to video
tape. A smaller inspection camera is run through the
auxiliary lines. The video inspection may be followed by
a dimensional and ovality survey.

Corrosion Mapping
The CAMCHEC Corrosion Mapping Tools are used
to evaluate the depth of corrosion and measure
the wall thickness of the tube body. The
corrosion survey is performed over the entire
length of both main and auxiliary lines. The data
is digitally recorded in real time, presented in
color to depth formats, and permanently stored
for future analysis and trending.

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)

Using the specially manufactured CAMCHEC TOFD
tooling, a complete TOFD examination of all welds
determines the presence of all corrosion, cracking
and other detrimental defects. The systems are
operated remotely and may incorporate a video
camera. The TOFD data is collected in real time and
is displayed in a simple gray scale format for ease of
interpretation.
