In this article I am going to discuss the
confusions, myths and questions of
students.HereIwouldtrytoguidethemto
draft their own Strategy to prepare for
exams.
Many of the students get confuse about the strategy for study. They are so afraid or
excited about the exam that they keep on asking everyone about it and they result with
mess. Do remember that a person who himself/herself is preparing for exam, how they
canhelpyouonthisunlesstheyhaveexperienceaboutit.
Secondly,everypersonhashisownwayofstudy,fewstarttheirstudiesearlyinmorning
and few loves learning all night. So if I suggest a person vice a versa the result will be
null,neitherhewillbeabletostudynorwilltakesleep.
Similarly, everyone has his own strength/weakness or interest. Some may have grip on
practicalsubjectssomemayhaveontheoreticalsubjects.Againherethesubjectsneed
tohaveextrafocusdiffersforeachandeveryone.
Iunderstandthatafterresultthestudents,whohavenotyetappearedforexamandare
going to appear in next attempt, get afraid because they see the fail percentage of
students.Here,Iwouldliketoadvicethemtonottoafraidbythis,rathersearchforthe
person who has passed the exam and ask his strategy and take the good things out of
that.
One more frequently asked question is Whether I should go for single group or both
group?Answerofthisisalsowithinyou.Onlyyouknowyourcapabilities,so,ifyouare
aboveaverageorbelievethatyoucangoforbothgroupsatoncethenoptforthat!
Onemorequestionstudentsdoask.Whichsubjectneedsmoreattention?Theanswerfor
thisisAllsubjectsneedsattentionbutthequantumofattentionforeachpaperdiffersfor
each
student.

note
That
ICAI
doesnotgivesusadvantageofgivingbackpaperlikeotherprofessionalstudies,herewe
have to bring minimum 40% marks in every subject and 50% in aggregate to clear the
group.
Many students get confused about the material they are using. My advice for them is
please"Becarefulwhilechoosingyourstudymaterialbeforeyourfirstattemptandonce
youchooseTrustitanddoasmanyasrevisionyoucandoratherthansearchingfornew
one.Thereasonforabovesentenceisthat,bythetimeyougetyourresult,youhardly
have3monthsinwhichyouhavetoprepareagainsoyoucantaffordnewmaterialwith
twotothreerevisions.
Fewstudentshavemyththatthemorepagestheyfill,themoremarkstheyget.Please
don't do this. Understand what exam you are appearing for This exam will make you
CharteredAccountantsopleasewriteonlyrelevantthing.
NowmovingtoourTopicStrategytoprepareforexams...
So, now I can help you to design your own strategy as no one understands you better
thanyou.Forthisgivesometimetoyourself,Sitwithapaperandpen,makeastrategy
that suits you. Dont make it so tough which cannot be continued for longer period and
onceyouaredonewithitDoFollowit,Dontcheatyourself.
So before you start for you exams, in addition to your main study material, you should
havefollowingaswell:

Now I would like to share my own strategy to make it more practical and advice you to
Customizeitforyou.BearinyourmindthatIwasneitherameritoriousstudentnoravery
intelligentone.Beinganaveragestudent,mystrategywasjusttoclearbothgroupsone
byone.
SoasIadvisedaboveItoohadtakenguidancefrommyseniorwhohadpassedherboth
groups one by one in her first attempts. I gave one group at a time and used material

For initial days I was not able to do self studies as all day was consumed in Coaching
strategy
Classes and Articleship training Therefore I just wanted 45 months before exams

withoutanycoachingclassesandaround2monthswithoutarticleshiptrainingtostartmy
selfstudies.
Somystrategywas:
Istartedmydayat6aminthemorningandwenttobedat11pmatnight.Itookproper
sleepaswellbecauseitwasalongjourneyandIcouldnotaffordrestlessstudieswhich
maymakemeillduringexams.
IstartedmydaywiththeoreticalsubjectIkeptmynoonandeveningforPracticalsubjects
andagainnightfortheoreticalsubjectthatshowIcouldmanagefoursubjectsinasingle
day.(Takinguppracticalsubjectsduringnoonhadalsokeptmefarfromsleepatnoon)
NowIhadmadestrategywhichwasdividedintothreelevelsofRevisions:

1st one was to be followed till one
and half months before exams. (Suppose for Nov.
attempt,thisstrategywastobefollowedtill15Sept.2016)
2nd one was to be followed till 15 days before exams. (Strategy has to be followed till
15thOct.2016)
3rdonewastobefollowedtillexams.(From16thOct.tillExams)
1stLevelofrevision:BeforestartingevenmyfirstrevisionIdidsomeroughwork.Itook
unsolvedscannerandmarkedthefrequentlyaskedquestions(Institutewantsstudentto
must know few concepts) for all the subjects and highlighted their answers in my own
studymaterial.

conceptanditsapplication.

Then moving forward to my second revision, I came to understand that in Costing and

Accounts there are many question which are 60% same with 23 different points which
examiner wants to test, I marked those points in the question (which helped me a lot
duringmy2ndand3rdlevelofrevision).So,Ihighlightedthosepointsinthequestionand
alsogavestarstofrequentlyaskedquestionsasperscanner.
For Practical Subjects: Now as I suggested to include Practice Manual in your study
material,Istartedsolvingthemwithmy2ndrevision.Ratherthansolvingthemanualall
together, I preferred to solve it chapter wise along with my main study material. For
example,revisingHoldingCompanies,firstlyIcompleteditfrommymainstudymaterial
then by practice manual then by RTP and Suggested Answers. Thats how I revised a
singlechaptercompletely.ThesamewayIpreparedSFM.
For DT, VG Sirs module is more than sufficient to go with and for IDT, Notes and the
classesofRajkumarSirwasenough.Ijustkeptonrevisingthemagainandagain.Andfor
closex
these two subjects I did not feel the need of practice manual. Though RTPs and
SuggestedAnswersaremust.

For Theoretical Subject: Preparing theoretical subject was the biggest task for me as
these were my weakest point so I had to put extra efforts. So as suggested above I
alreadyhadhighlightingthefrequentlyaskedquestioninmystudymaterialforAuditand
ISCAonly(takenquestionfromScannersandanswerfrommyownstudymaterial)and
bydoingthis,Ihadselectedportiontobereadineachchapter.ThenIstartedreadingor
learningonlythatrelevantportioneverydayandgraduallyIwasabletoreadentirebook
on a single day so basically I was revising the entire theoretical subject every day. For
Law,IwasnotrequiredtohighlightimportantquestionsasitwasalreadydoneinMunish
Bhandari Sirs book and I opted for main book of Munish Bhandari for this level of
revision.

Underthisstrategy,ForPracticalSubjects:ratherthangoingforallquestions,Ipreferred
tosolvingonlyimportantquestionasstarredbymeinmy1ststrategy.
For Theoretical Subjects: My father had advised to learn by writing which makes an
imageinyourmindofwhatyoureadsonowthiswasthetimetostartwritingtherelevant
highlightedpartofthechapters.ThatwasallIdidfortheory.Yes,forcaselaw,RTPand
Suggestedanswershelpedmealotasitgavemeanideahowtowriteanswerofcase
laws.Andyes,nowIshiftedtohandbookofMunishBhandarforpreparationofLaw.
3rdLevelofrevision:Nowasexamsarejustfewdaysfar.Thelevelofstressisatits
top. While reading one subject, I was worried about the other one. Still I had to keep
stressfreeandfollowthestrategy.
For Practical Subjects: Now I preferred solving important/tricky points only(marked

earlier) rather than solving entire question

istomakeyoupeoplestressfreeandplanyourstudieswelltofaceexamination.Though
ItriedtosummarizeityetIfilledfourpages,buttrustmeIdidnotwroteasingleirrelevant
word.
