EdgelandsandUrbanAgriculture
ThethemeoftheStudiocombinestwotopicsthatrepresentimportantissuesofthe
contemporaryurbanconditionandurbaneconomy:edgelands,spacesbetweentheurban
andtheruralwhichoftendonthaveafixeddestinationandshape,andurban
agriculture,anactivityintegratedintoandinteractingwiththeurbaneconomicand
ecologicalsystem.Inthelastyears,agriculture,asaconsistentfunctionaswellasa
functionborderingonthemetropolitancontext,hasexperiencedaprocessofcontraction
andmarginalizationofitsspaces,especiallyinmanyareasofthemostindustrialized
countries.Theoutcomesofthisurbangrowthmodelhaveproducednegativeeffectson
theecologicalequilibriumonalargescale,andhaveoftenbeenconsideredinefficientfor
thesupplyingfunctionswithintheurbanareas.
Theemergingofthemesfocusedonanewconsiderationoftheroleofthespacesin
betweentheurbanandtheruralandontherelationshipofcityandagricultureorof
productionandconsumptionandleisure,havedrawntheattentionofplannersandurban
andlandscapedesignerstoaspecifictypologyofurbanagriculture,whichplays
economic,spatial,ecologicalandsocialroles.AsstatedbyRUAFResourceCentreson
UrbanAgriculture,Urbanagricultureisnotarelictofthepastthatwillfadeaway(urban
agricultureincreaseswhenthecitygrows)norbroughttothecitybyruralimmigrantsthat
willlosetheirruralhabitsovertime.Itisanintegralpartoftheurbansystem.Besides
theeconomicalvalueofurbanagriculture,plannersandurbandesignersconsidermore
andmorethegreenandopenspacenotonlyasanaestheticandecologicalissue,butalso
aspotentialsocialspaceforpeople,wherecreativeandculturalactivities,oftenintegrated
withnewagriculturaluses,canfindanattractivedestination.
TheStudioaimsatexploringtheseplanninganddesignissues,implementingwithan
interdisciplinaryapproachtheconceptof"urbanagriculture"andrealizingdesign
experiencesatdifferentscales,appliedtoawidepotentialgreenbowlocatedinthe
westernsectorofthecityofMilanrangingfromPortelloneighborhoodclosetotheurban
coreofMilano,totheNavigli.
TheStudioisalsoincludedwithintheframeworkoftheprojectReformingMilan,
consideringtherelationshipwiththeMilan2015Exposite,itsthemeFeedingtheplanet,
energyforlifeandtheopportunitiesrelatedtoitsposteventheritageandreuseactions.
UrbanPlanning
Urbanagricultureisincreasinglybecominganimportantactivityinurbaneconomies,that
cancontributesignificantlytothewellbeingoffarmersandothercitizens,ifproperly
managed.Thegrowthofhumansettlementscreatesacompetitionbetweenthetraditional
urbanlandusesandagriculture.Whileregionalandurbanplannershavegenerally
acceptedtheperiurbanzoneasamixedzoneintermsoflandusecategories(including

urbanagriculture),theintraurbanzoneinmostcasesremainsapreservefortraditional
urbanuses.Asitisarguedinarecentstudy(CitiesFarmingfortheFutureUrban
AgricultureforGreenandProductiveCities,2006),urbanagriculture,however,hasthe
potentialtoprosperinmoderncitiesbecauseofitsmultiplefunctionsandrelationswith
cityissues.Citiesprovideeasyaccesstomarketsandaprevailinghighdemandforfood.
Infacturbanagriculturalpracticeshavealwaysbeenpartofthecity,buttheintegration
intotheurbaneconomyislackingintodaysurbanplanningandpolicies,despitea
growinginterestforitspotentialrole.Ontheotherside,transformationinurban
economieshasbeenoftenresponsibleforthecreationofperipheralfringesaffectedby
lackofdestinations,eventemporary,abletopreventtheirdegradation,whereurban
agriculturecouldplayasignificantroleinthefieldofeconomics,socialpolicies,landscape
andurbandesign.
IntheMilanregion,averyimportantplanningissuehasbeenachievedinthelastdecades
withtheapprovaloftheMasterPlanoftheParcoSudMilano,averylargegreenbeltin
thesouthern,westernandeasternsectorsoftheregion,whereagriculturalactivities
coexistwiththereuseofformerfarmbuildings(cascine)foragritourismorleisure
activities.DespitethegoalsoftheParcoSudMasterPlanandofotherpoliciesatthe
regionalscale,anamountofderelictbuildingsandabandonedspacescharacterizesthe
bordersofthemaincityandofsmallermunicipalities,wherethequalityofurbanorrural
spaceisnotclearlydefined.
Onthesideoftheurbanscaleapproach,theStudioactivityaimsattheidentificationand
descriptionofsomeedgelandsinthewesternsectorofthecityofMilan,tofindoutthe
possibilitiesoftheirdestinationforactivitiesinthefieldofwhatwillbedefined(following
theliteratureandsomecasestudies)asurbanagriculture:differentissueswillbe
considered,suchastheaccessibility,thelocalplansdestinationsandthequalityofthe
existinglandscapeelements.Someguidelinesforthedestinationoftheareasandfor
somebasicurbanandlandscapedesignissuesintheformofamasterplanwillberequired
astheoutcomeoftheStudio.
Representation
ThemoduleofRepresentationwillbebasedonthefactthatthespacewearedealingwith
canbeconsideredasabook:ithastoberead,understoodandfinallyusedforaspecific
purpose,inourcasecorrespondingtotheintentionoftransformingthesamespaceintoa
newone,resultingfromourdesignactions.Weshalltrytolearnfromplaces(also
referringtocasestudies)andwewillusethecommonrepresentationtoolstoexplainhow
theyperformbeforeourintervention(phaseofanalysis)andafterourproposals(phase
ofdesign).Thismethodologyisparticularlysuitableifappliedtothekindofplaceswe
shallbedealingwith,suchastheurbanfringes,wherethetraditionalcityscapeisfading
intoacombinationofbuiltandunbuiltelements:infrastructures,urbanvoids,withmixed
characterstakenfromurban,industrialandagriculturallandscapes,resultingfromnatural
andhumanfacts.Studentswillbefreetouseanykindofcommunicationtools,provided
thattherepresentationsareeffective:thematicmapping,diagrams,sections,simplework
modelswillbethemostcommonformsofrepresentation.
ArchitecturalDesign
ThemoduleofArchitecturalDesignpaysspecialattentiontothephysicalandspatial
consequencesofthoseplanningstrategiesfosteringastrongfocusonurbanagriculture
basedprograms.ConsideringNatureasanartifact,Landasacarpetformorphological
andtypologicalresearches,landscapebecomesanoperativebackgroundforallactions,
signs,tracesandbehaviourstriggeredbytheextensiveuseofagricultureasamainactor
inestablishingasuperiorleveloforder.
Intheexercicesandreading/mappingordesignexperiencesincludedintheStudio,itwill
beemphasizedthecloserelationshipbetweenusesandcoversoftheland,buildingtypes
hostingfunctionsrelatedtothoseuses,accessibilityandmobilityissues,physical
densities,usingarchitectureinthebroadersenseofthewordtounfoldthefullpotentialof
thosehybridedgeterritorieswherethegrowthofthecityistightlyconnectedwithnon
conventionalurbanfarmingattitudes.Thescaleofinterventionwillrangefromthe
assumptionsimmediatelyissuedbytheUrbanPlanningleveltothemicrosizeofartifacts,
waterways,topography,andthecomprehensivefieldoflandscapedesign.
Methodology
TheStudioisacontinuousworkshop,granting12credits,focusingonurbanprocessesof
transformationonthetopicsaroundurbanagriculture.
TheStudioisa1315weekstrajectory,plusaoneweekfinalworkshop,including
projects,exercises,mappingsandreadings/writingsexperiences,givingshapetoan
educationalenvironmentwherepersonalparticipationandcontinuousdedicationtothe
activityoftheworkshopdefineanadvancedlearningatmosphere.
Thereading/mappinganddesignexperiencewillfosterintensivelyacriticalreadingand
designontheinteractionamongUrbanplanningissuesandtheireconomicfeasibilityand
consequences,onaccessibilityandopenspacedesigncriteria,eitherappliedonthesmall
scaleofaspatiallyreducedportionofagivenareaoronthemasterplanoftheentire
area.
Lecturesandcasestudiespresentedbytheprofessorsinvestigateanarrayofhistoricand
contemporarypointsoftheinternationaldebate.Presentationsbyvisitingacademicsand
professionalsandsitetoursexplorekeyissuesfromdiverseviewpoints.Readings,group
discussionsandcritiquesprovidesupportfordesigndirections.
TheStudioactivityisdevelopedeitherindividuallyandingroups.
AtthebeginningoftheStudio,studentsareindividuallyaskedtoexploretheterritoryof

thegivensitefollowingsomeofthethematicissuessuggestedandtoconveythefindings
intoanotebook,agraphicallyandconceptuallyalthoughunformallyorganizedbooklet.
Thebookletwillpossiblyincluderawmaterialsexpressedonavarietyofmediasuchas:
sketches,diagrams,conceptualandphysicalstudymodels,photomontages,interviews,
storyboards,urbanimages.Thatassignmentisaimedtounfoldanewurbanmeaningonto
theareasmappedintheBookletallowingtheemergenceofpotentials,hiddenqualitiesof
themappedsituation.Researchandrepresentationareconsideredactsofinterpretation,
notrotedocumentation.
Insmallgroups(23),students,followinganinteractiveapproachwiththeinterdisciplinary
teachersteam,willidentifyaproposalforthedestinationofthechosenedgelandand
fortheconceptplan,whichwillbeimplementedallduringtheStudio.
Inadditiontoclassattendanceandstudioassignments,studentsshouldsetasidetime
eachweektogatherinformationandimagesonurbanprojectsofinterest.Wewill
maintainanurbanarchiveintheonlinestudiofolder(CorsionlineorDropbox)intowhich
studentscandropmaterialsforeveryonetouseasaresearchresource.

AttendanceisaprimaryrequirementforthisStudioandstudentsarethereforeexpected
toattendallclassmeetings,fortheentirescheduledtime,andtobeactivelyworkingon
theStudioassignmentswhileinclass.Studentswhowillnotattendatleast80%ofthe
programmedactivities(lectures,sitevisits,workreviews),willnotpasstheexam.Both
theindividualandthegroupworkwillbevaluated.
Threeintermediatesubmissionarescheduledandtheevaluationofthedocuments
delivered,whichwillfollowdefinedrequirements,willcontributetothefinalgrade.
Theexamwillconsistinapublicpresentationoftheresultsofthedesignprocessatthe
conclusionofthefinalworkshop,aimedatdemonstratingtheleveloftheacquired
methodologicalapproachtodesignandthecontroloftheprojectcontentsandoftheir
representation.
Studentswillworkinteamsof23personsandtheworkmustbepresentedinthesame
examsession.
Personalattendanceatpresentationsandpinupsisstrictlymandatoryandpermission
mustbereceivedfromtheteachersteamtosubmittinglatework.Agoodfinaldesign
proposalisnottheonlyevaluationcriterion:motivation,dedicationandactiveparticipation
intheworkshopactivityandincommentinganddiscussingthetheoreticalcontributions
arealsorelevantcriteria.
Studentworkwillbeevaluatedatthecompletionofeachassignment(includingcasestudy
discussion,siteresearch,textwriting,participationingroupdiscussionsandpresentations)
basedonthefollowingratings,withplusandminusadjustments:ExcellentA=2730
