GENERAL SAFETY AND BEHAVIOUR PRESCRIPTIONS FOR ACTIVITY IN WORKSHOPS OR SIMILAR
PLACES.

DANGER OF SUFFOCATION

GASOLINE ENGINES
Exhaust gases of gasoline vehicles contain carbon oxide, a colourless and odourless gas that, in case of
inhalation, can cause serious physical problems.
When working inside pits, it is necessary to be very cautious since some components of exhaust gases are heavier
than the air and deposit on the pit bottom.
Be careful also in case of gas vehicles.
DIESEL ENGINES
The exhaust gas from a diesel engine has a composition that varies according to: type of engine, of induction, use
conditions and fuel composition.
The diesel exhaust includes gas (CO, CO2, NO and HC) and particulate (soot, sulphates and PAHs).
The small carbon particles forming soot remain suspended in the air and can be breathed.
Moreover, small amounts of toxic components are present.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Always ensure good ventilation and aspiration (especially in inspection pits).
- Always operate the exhaust fan system in closed rooms.

DANGER OF CRUSHING

You may be crushed against the work bench if the vehicle has not been correctly locked in place by mechanical
systems.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Make sure that the vehicle is unable to move by engaging the hand brake and locking the wheels.

DANGER OF INJURY

Whether engines are at a standstill or operating, there are mobile parts (belts, etc.) that can injure the hands and
arms.
Amongst the various engine components, mechanics should pay particular attention to electrically operated fans
since these may unexpectedly start up even when the engine itself is off.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Never place the hands near moving parts when the engine is on.
- When working near electrically started fans, let the engine cool first and then unplug the fan.
- Keep the connection wires of the test instruments as far as possible from moving parts of the engine.

DANGER OF BURNS

Some of the components in engines (exhaust gas manifold, etc.) can become very hot, as can certain sensors.
Remember to never touch these parts.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Wear protective gloves.
- Never allow the connection wires of test instruments to rest on or near hot parts.
- Never keep the engine running after the tests.

DANGER OF FIRE OR EXPLOSION

When work is being carried out on the fuel system (gasoline pump, injectors and carburettor, etc.) there may be a
risk of fire or explosion owing to the fuels used and/or the vapours that these products form.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Disconnect the ignition system.
- Allow the engine to cool.
- Do not use open flames or anything liable to produce sparks.
- Do not smoke.
- Collect any spilt fuel.
- Operate exhaust fans in closed rooms.

SOUND LEVEL

When working near a vehicle, mainly at high engine speed, noise levels can reach 90dB.
The long exposure to such noise sources can cause hearing damages.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- The user has to protect, if necessary, working locations near test areas.
- If necessary, the operator has to wear personal protection means.

DANGEROUS VOLTAGE

Voltage is always a danger in civil or industrial electricity mains or the electric systems of vehicles.
When a person touches test instruments or parts of engines to which electricity has been applied, there is always a
risk of electric shock due, for example, to damaged connections.
This is true of both the primary and secondary of the ignition system and for test instrument connections.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Only use the supplied cables to connect the test instrument. Make sure that the insulation is not damaged.
- Make sure that you do not touch live parts of the vehicle when testing and regulating with the engine running.
- Only make test connections with suitable systems (test cables, specific adapter cables).

DANGER OF INTOXICATION

If subjected to high temperatures (over 250 C or owing to fire outbreaks), the tubes used to sample exhaust gas
release highly toxic gas which, if inhaled, may be harmful to the health.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- Immediately contact a physician if such gas is inhaled.
- Use neoprene or PVC gloves to eliminate combustion residuals.
- Fire residuals can be neutralised with a calcium hydroxide solution. This forms calcium fluoride which can be
removed with water.

DANGER OF CORROSION

Acids and leaches can harm the skin if this is not protected.
The condensate that remains in the gas sampling pipe and condensate separator unit contains acids.
Take great care when the oxygen sensor (O2) and the nitric oxide sensor (NO) are replaced since they contain
highly corrosive substances.
Corrosive liquid may be spilt if a liquid crystal indicator is broken. This liquid should never be touched, inhaled or
swallowed.
SAFETY MEASURES:
- In case of contact with the skin, immediately wash the affected part with water and contact a physician.
- Immediately contact a physician if such products are inhaled or swallowed.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SAFETY OF THE INSTRUMENT


MOTORSCAN DEVICE guarantees a high level of protection against the risk of electric shock. It has a power
supply cable with three-prong plug required in order to ground metal parts.
Those installing the instrument shall be responsible for connecting it to a correctly grounded electrical socket. ask
for technical assistance before using an adapter or extension. These devices could interrupt the grounding circuit.
Connection of the appliance to an electrical socket as is not correctly connected to the electrical system of the
building could result in electrocution.

Comply with the following indications to ensure constant protection against the risk of electrocution:
- Only connect the instrument to electrical sockets possessing the correct voltage. Contact the Electricity Board if
you are uncertain as to the voltage supplied by the utilised electrical socket.
- If the instrument has other wires besides the powering cable, these must be connected to their relative
connectors before connecting the powering cables to their relative electrical sockets. Furthermore, it will be
necessary to disconnect the powering cables from the sockets before the other wires are removed.

For the correct working of the DEVICE an O2 sensor with a duration of approx. one year is needed. Like optional, it
is possible to install an NO SENSOR too.
Please note that these sensors contain certain substances that can be toxic and/or cancerogenic. When they are
disposed of, it is essential to comply with the current laws or to contact the competent authorities if the disposal
procedures are not known.
In particular, the substances are:
- O2 SENSOR: contains small quantities of: potassium acetate, lead, lead oxide, platinum, silver, carbon and
antimony.
- NO SENSOR: contains small quantities of sulphuric acid, platinum, ruthenium, zinc, gold, silver and carbon.
If you come into contact with the substances in the sensor, thoroughly wash the affected part under running water
and consult a physician.

Strictly comply with the following instructions when servicing:


- Always replace fuses with others of equal value, if presents (see indications on the data plate or in this manual).
- NEVER EVER open the cover of DEVICE: you could risk electrocution. This operation may only be carried out
by a qualified technician and not before having disconnected the power supply cable.
- You may risk dangerous situations or electric shocks if actions are carried out as differ from those described in
this manual. In particular, if attempts are made to repair DEVICE.
- Do not press excessively the display to avoid damaging the DEVICE.
- Contact a servicing technician if DEVICE fails to correctly function after compliance with the use instructions.
- Check that all installed spare parts possess characteristics as are the same or equivalent to the original ones.
Other parts may not possess the same safety characteristics.

Always contact qualified technical personnel if repairs are required.

GENERAL INFORMATION
INSTALLATION
Never allow DEVICE to be exposed to the sun for long periods of time or to allow it to stand near hot equipment
(stoves, heaters, etc.): the maximum operating temperature is 40 C.
Do not move DEVICE from a hot place to a cold place and vice versa. The formation of condensate inside
DEVICE might cause damages to the electronic circuits or to the bench. If the instrument must be moved, wait
ten minutes or so before switching DEVICE on.
Protect DEVICE from the rain or from excessive moisture to prevent irreparable damage to the parts.
Set DEVICE on its dolly, fixing it in place with the relative screws, or place it on a flat, vibration-free surface.
DEVICE and/or the operator could sustain damage or be injured if the instrument were dropped.

OPERATIONAL INFORMATION
To prevent contamination from toxic gas, it is advisable to use the instrument in a sufficiently ventilated place or
to set the gas and condensate exhaust pipe outdoors.
Never place objects on DEVICE as could drop through the ventilation slits.
Check that the ventilation slits do not become covered since this could prevent the electronic components in
DEVICE from being correctly cooled. For this reason always allow 50 centimetres between the DEVICE and any
obstacles which may prevent a perfect ventilation.
Never move the instrument by pulling it from the cables to which it is connected.
Never use the instrument by setting it on its side or upside down: DEVICE has not been designed to operate in
these positions.
All connections should be made when the vehicle engine in question is off.
Check that all cables are far from hot parts (over 50 C) or moving parts.
Disconnect all engine connections before moving the vehicle in question.

WHEN YOU DON'T USE THE INSTRUMENT


Disconnect DEVICE from the power source when it is not be to used for a long period of time.
If DEVICE is not to be used for a long time, it is advisable to cover it with an open-weave fabric cover.

CLEANING
When necessary, the outer surfaces of DEVICE should be cleaned: never use cleaning products containing
spirits, ammonia or gasoline. Only use neutral detergents and soft, slightly moistened cloths.
ATTENTION ! Always disconnect DEVICE from the power source before proceeding with the cleaning
operations.

CE CONFORMITY MARK
It indicates the product compliance with the Essential Safety
Requirements provided for the European Directives applicable to the
product itself.
INFORMATION FOR THE USERS
Pursuant to art.13 of the Law Decree 25 July 2005, n.151 Implementation of
directives 2002/95/CE, 2002/96/CE and 2003/108/CE on the reduction of the
use of hazardous substances in the electrical and electronic equipment and
waste disposal.

The symbol of the bin with crossed lines on the equipment or on the
packaging indicates that the product at the end of its useful life has to be
collected separately from other waste.
The selective disposal of the relevant equipment at the end of its life, is
organised and managed by the manufacturer. The user wishing to
dispose of the equipment, shall contact the manufacturer and comply with
the system the latter has adopted in order to allow the selective disposal
of the equipment at the end of its life.
The suitable selective collection for the subsequent recycling, processing
and environmentally compatible disposal of the disused equipment,
contributes to avoid possible negative effects on environment and health,
and encourages the reuse and/or recycling of the materials the
equipment is made of.
The unauthorised disposal of the product by the owner implies the
application of the administrative fees provided for by the rules in force.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT


1.1 INTRODUCTION
The "EUROSMOKE MODULE" is an intelligent module consisting of a physical smoke gauging part and an
electronic part that processes the signal and transmits it through the RS232 serial output.
Built in order to strictly comply with the current provisions in force, this instrument gauges opacity by means of the
partial and continuous flow system.
The automatic carrying out of the tests is permitted to the responsible technician , through the use of the
SOFTWARE 7102 which allows the fast and exact development of the indicated operations.
SOFTWARE with detailed indications guides the operator through the tests and use of the instrument.

1.2 OPERATIVE PRINCIPLE


EUROSMOKE MODULE is an exhaust gas analyser for Diesel engines.
Thanks to tried and tested technologies, the EUROSMOKE MODULE is essential when conducting the smoke test.
The instrument consists of the following main parts:
- the light detector and generator unit;
- the pneumatic circuit to sample the exhaust gas;
- the pneumatic circuit to clean the measuring chamber;
- the electronic monitoring circuit.

1.2.1 LIGHT DETECTOR AND GENERATOR CIRCUIT


When the rays of light from a led are reduced by a disturbing element (exhaust gas), their intensity also
diminishes and this variation is detected by a special highly sensitive and accurate silicon sensor.
In this case, the led with relative optic unit and sensor are installed at the ends of the chamber through which
exhaust gas is allowed to pass. This ensures that the gauged measurement will be absolutely accurate.

1.2.2 PNEUMATIC EXHAUST GAS CIRCUIT


The exhaust gas is picked up by a special sampling probe and is conveyed, only when necessary, inside the
measuring chamber. This operation is carried out by a solenoid valve installed in series with the measuring
chamber. This is kept at a permanently constant temperature in order to prevent the formation of condensate
which could alter the reading. The exhaust gas is outlet through two openings at the ends of the chamber
thanks to its natural pressure.

1.2.3 PNEUMATIC CLEANING CIRCUIT


The exhaust gas from Diesel engines sometimes possesses a very evident feature: it may dirty the measuring
parts. To prevent this from happening, there are two protective slides which can be easily removed for cleaning.
These guard the led and silicon sensor. Compressed air blown on to the two slides means that cleaning
operations can be less frequent. To ensure that the measuring chamber is correctly cleaned, a solenoid valve
installed in series with the exhaust gas circuit conveys fresh air inside whenever necessary.

1.2.4 ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT


The measuring accuracy and reliability of EUROSMOKE MODULE is also ensured thanks to an electronic
circuit based on a microprocessor which handles all elements and gauges all the necessary data.
The gauged values are transmitted outside via an RS232 serial output.

2.1 INSTALLATION

Proceed with the assembling of the smoke meter as indicated in the following picture:
- Screw the legs to the support ;
- Take the packaging away and position it in the appropriate base;
- Fix it with the provided screws.

Remove the instrument from its packing material and set it on its trolley, screwing the leaflets provided as
follows.
Connect the power cord (2) to the battery by using the clamps respecting the polarity ( red calmp to the positive
pole + and the black clamp to the negative pole -).

the paragraph FEATURES .

2.1.3 CONNECTIONS
Connect the exhaust gas sampling clamp (19) to the smoke entry junction (14) and to the sampling probe (21 or
22) according to the exhaust pipe in question.
Connect the cable for the piezoelectric rpm counter (24) to the relative tap (6) and to the rpm counter itself (20).
Connect the possible temperature probe (optional) to the connector (7).
Connect the unit to the PC by the SERIAL CABLE (23) to the COM1 (8) of the SMOKE METER and to any
COM of the C.

MOD. 9011
Connect the power supply cable of the EUROSMOKE MODULE (25) to the respective PLUG(1) A and insert the
same cord to the net plug making sure that the net has an exact value ( see specification)
THE SMOKE METER is now ready to be used , switch it on through the NET SWITCH (2).

MOD. 9021
Check that the power supply cable is well connected to the battery as indicated in the paragraph
INSTALLATION. The clamps can be wired to the battery also when the unit is switched off.
If the battery is not charged proceed with the re-charging by connecting the EXTERNAL BATTERY CHARGER
(57) to the plug (2a) and leave it under charge for approx. 20 hours (check that the clamps of the power
supply cord are connected).
The charging time is intended for a fully discharged battery having the technical features indicated in the
paragraph FEATURES.
THE SMOKE METER is now ready to be used , switch it on by the ON/OFF SWITCH (1).

WARNING !
When the unit is in stand by mode has a needs minimum energy, it is more convenient to keep it on
than switch it on and off several times needing the unit higher energy during the warming up phase.
An acoustic signal indicates the low battery level : if you do not recharge it in a short time the unit
automatically switch off.

Power the PC previously connected to the SMOKE METER on and , if not already installed , the software
MULTEX 2000 needs to be installed by following the attached instructions.
When the installation is completed the following icon is displayed on the desktop :

Double clicking on the icon or selecting it and pressing ENTER the following screen is displayed:

Remember that in the "Multex2000" environment selections are made directly with the mouse or by means of
the keyboard. In this case, you can move between the fields using the TAB key and confirming with ENTER.

NOTE:
Place the packet with the CD and documents in a safe place so that they can be exhibited for fiscal
requirements.

2.2 SETUP

2.2.2 NOTES ON THE USE OF "MULTEX 2000" SOFTWARE


The program has three different access levels, depending on the possibility of changing the program settings. If
you attempt to carry out an operation which requires passage to a given level, an error message is displayed or
the password is requested.
- USER level: this is the level which can be used by the end user; at this level it is not possible to change the
program settings and configuration;
- ADMINISTRATOR level: the system administrator (e.g. the works manager) can gain access at this level as
it is possible to make changes to the configuration which could affect correct operation of the program or
equipment); the password for access at this level is: ADMIN.
- SERVICE level: this level is reserved exclusively for service personnel. Only specialised staff knowing the
password or owning the service hardware key can access to this level
Click on the arrow with the mouse to select the desired access level. The password will be requested for the
ADMINISTRATOR and SERVICE levels.
When the access level has been set press the "Multex 2000" in order to display the following screen.
Now the operator is able to select "Multex 2000" in order to proceed to a general setup MULTEX.

2.2.3.1 SELECTING THE TYPE OF STANDARD (where required)


Each country uses its own STANDARDS.
The instrument is extremely versatile and reduces the risk of non-conforming tests since it is possible to
choose the type of standard to which the instrument itself must comply.
This option is only allowed by certain standards. This option is disabled if not applicable.
To select the standard click on the little arrow near the standard type, or go on that field using TAB key and
use the arrow keys.

2.2.3.2 RPM COUNTER SELECTION


It is possible to choose 3 different types of revolutions counter when you enter into revolutions counter
selection:
- PIEZO It's the revolution counter with the small clamp which is on the injection table. As an alternative it
is possible to use i following optional:
8270 connected to the battery by the appropriate cable (optional);
8290 connected to the OBD plug when vehicles are provided with.
- OPTO An optic revolution counter, is employed, for all kind of engine where it is not possible to detect N
of revolutions from injector tube.
- ALTERNATOR The "RATIO" value is to be introduced and it is supplied on a table.
To select the RPM counter click on the little arrow near the RPM counter type, or go on that field using TAB
key and use the arrow keys.

2.2.3.3 FILTER SELECTION (where required)


Following access to filter selection mode, it will be possible to choose 3 types:
- Without filter:
- Filter A;
- Filter B.
The difference amongst the various types lies in the electric response time: if filter A is selected, the
response time will be less than 0.5 sec. With filter B, the response time will be 0.9 - 1.1 sec. and without a
filter, the response type will be immediate.
This option is only allowed by certain standards. This option is disabled if not applicable.
To select the filter click on the little arrow near the filter type, or go on that field using TAB key and use the
arrow keys.

2.2.3.4 PROBE SELECTION (where required)


Probe selection includes a choice from between two types:
- Probe 1;
- Probe 2.
The difference between the two types lies in the probe diameter: probe 1 is designed for small diameter
exhausts, while probe 2 should be used for large diameter exhausts.
This mask will not appear when not applicable.
This option is disabled if not applicable.

3.1 WARMING UP
The instrument will need to warm up after powering. The warming up time will vary according to the ambient
temperature and the time that has elapsed since the instrument was last switched off.
This time will never exceed 15 minutes.

NORMAL OPERATION
4.1 PUMP
Digit F1 to switch on the pump or access the STAND-BY condition (energy saving), thus switching off the pump
itself.
The instrument may automatically access the STAND-BY status if it fails to detect the passage of smoke after a
few minutes operation.
This condition is always displayed by the corresponding telltale.

4.2 DISPLAYS
The basic data displayed by the SMOKE MODULE during the smoke test are two: opacity and engine rpm.
Opacity is expressed in two different measuring scales: 1/m and %.
1/m: it represents the opacity value stated in optical density (K).
%: represents the opacity value stated in luminous absorption percentage (N).
RPM (revolution per minute): during the exhaust gas analysis test, it is also necessary to check
that the engine rpm rate is correct. The rpm value is detected by connecting the relative clamp to an
injection tube.

Other important data are also displayed:


ENGINE TEMP: Engine temperature measured as engine oil temperature.
SMOKE TEMP: Temperature of the smoke and the measuring chamber.
PRESSURE: Pressure inside the measuring chamber. This parameter , according to some
regulations, can be used also to detect the accelerations.

The two entities 1/m (red) and RPMx1000 (yellow) are also graphically displayed in the lattice during operation.

4.3 RESET
Reset takes place after the warming up phase. It is either automatically selected by the instrument or by the
operator when he digits F2 on the keyboard.

ATTENTION !
IT IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN TO ACCELERATE DURING THE RESETTING
PHASE.

Automatic selection occurs according to internal programming which takes certain parameters into account. These
are: smoke value, time since last reset, no test in progress.

Any resetting errors and relative instructions will be displayed on the monitor (also consult chapter "ERROR
MESSAGES").

4.4 LINEARITY CHECK

ATTENTION !
It is advisable to proceed with linearity check only after having carried out
extraordinary maintenance operations or when requested by the instrument

Linearity check enables the accuracy of the instrument to be checked by inserting a sample filter of known value
along the optic path.
Linearity check is activated by digiting F3.

On request, insert sample filter (B) (indicated by the word "FILTER") into the relative housing after having removed
the empty frame (A), indicated by the word "NORMAL".

Once this has been done, the instrument will compare the
read value with the nominal value of the sample filter.

Any linearity check errors and relative instructions will appear on the monitor as error messages.
Substitute the sample filter for the empty holder at the end of the operation.

4.5 SETUP
By the key F5 it is possibile to display more detailed information about the smoke meter that you are currently
using as indicated in the following picture

Connect the instrument to the vehicle in question before beginning the test.

The only connections required are:


- Sampling tube;
- Revolution counter clamp;
- Temperature probe.

The sampling pipe should be inserted into the exhaust pipe until the relative clamp connects. There are two types
of probe:
- The probe with an internal diameter of 10 mm, to use in exhaust pipes with internal diameters of up to 70 mm.
- The probe with an internal diameter of 27 mm, to use in exhaust pipes with internal diameters exceeding 70
mm.

The revolution counter clamp may be connected to the tube of one of the injectors, remembering that:
- The connecting zone should be clean and free from incrustations;
- The clamp must be set on a straight part measuring at least 2 centimetres, far from curves or twisted sections;
- The securing hand wheel must be firmly tight.

ATTENTION!
CHECK THAT THE REVOLUTION COUNTER CLAMP IS UNABLE TO TOUCH OTHER
INJECTION TUBES.

Insert the temperature probe at the place of the graduated dipstick indicating the engine oil level.

By sliding the rubber cone it is possible to adjust the probe length.

ATTENTION!
THE LENGTH OF THE PROBE PART TO BE INSERTED IN THE OIL MUST NEVER BE
LONGER THAN THE LENGTH OF THE GRADUATED DIPSTICK.

5.1 SELECTING THE TYPE OF TEST


Digit F4 for access to the test according to CEE procedures.
The procedure includes a selection from between two different types of test:
- OFFICIAL;
- NOT OFFICIAL.
The OFFICIAL test allows an automatic test in compliance with the regulation s specs.
The UNOFFICIAL TEST allows a faster test during the phase of vehicles adjustment .

After having made the required selection, digit F5 to proceed.

5.1.1 OFFICIAL TEST


5.1.1.1 VEHICLE DATA ENTRY
After having chosen OFFICIAL TEST, proceed by entering the characteristic vehicle data.
VEHICLE: Enter the type of vehicle to be tested. 20 characters are available.
PLATE: Enter the plate of the tested vehicle.
FEEDING (TURBO/ASPIRATED): Enter the type of DIESEL engine you are going to test.

Digit F5 to proceed, ESC to annul.

5.1.1.2 ENGINE DATA ENTRY


After the characteristic vehicle data have been entered, the test proceeds with the engine data.
Use the SPACE and ENTER keys to select and confirm the values.
ENGINE TEMPERATURE: (the instrument will automatically set 80 C).
This is the minimum temperature the engine must reach in order to conduct the test.

OPACITY: (the instrument automatically sets 2.5 m for aspirated engines and 3.9 m for smoke engines).
This is the maximum opacity value permitted by the standard.
K: (the instrument automatically sets 0.25).
The difference between the best and worst test must not exceed the absolute value of 0.25.

5.1.1.3 VISUAL INSPECTION


After having entered the nominal data, MULTEX will ask the operator to visually check the exhaust system in
order to identify any leaks which could alter the test result. This inspection is very important since any leaks
from the exhaust circuit could give very much lower opacity readings. Unfortunately, some operators never
make this inspection, thus conducting an inaccurate test.

Having passed the test confirmed by F5, MULTEX will automatically wait for the minimum temperature to be
reached.
If this fails to occur, the test may proceed but the final print-out will indicate that the temperature value was
wrong.

Once the minimum required temperature has been reached, the instrument will either automatically switch to
the next phase or will do so when F5 is pressed, during which time the instrument will proceed with the
resetting phase.

Wait a few instants to allow the instrument to complete the operation. Check any error message that appears
in specific chapter "ERROR MESSAGES .

5.1.1.4 UNRESTRICTED ACCELERATION TEST


After reset, the instrument will ask the operator to make 6 accelerations in order to clean and stabilise engine
operation.

The true test may now start. This consists of 4 accelerations plus a relative calculation of the average of the
peak values gauged during each (see delta): if the average of the gauged values and the difference between
one acceleration and the next are below the values set during the initial phase, the test can be considered as
having been passed. Failing this, the test can be repeated until a positive result has been obtained.
Begin with the first acceleration: the request is displayed by the following figure:

After acceleration, the instrument will automatically gauge the maximum peak opacity value of the tested
vehicle. By means of a beeping signal and video message, it will now ask the operator to release the
accelerator pedal. The values shown on the graph correspond to the opacity and rpm rate measured during
acceleration.
This procedure must be repeated four times.

At the end of the four accelerations, the instrument will display the obtained result.
If the result is positive, the operator can CONTINUE (F5) and issue the relative receipt.
If, on the other hand, the result is negative, the operator may proceed with other accelerations REPEAT (F6)
until he obtains the desired result.

The test has been passed if:


- The average of four accelerations is less than the limit value;
- The difference between one acceleration and the next is less than the "Delta" limit.

After the Test, MULTEX will tell the operator whether to assign the inspection receipt or not.
A set of notes can also be entered and issued on print-out, eg.: "Test not passed, test again within one
week." (this will justify the use of a vehicle with off-limit values for a limited time).
The test ends with entry of the tester's name.

5.1.2 NOT OFFICIAL TEST


The NON OFFICIAL test can be carried out in a very short time since it's not necessary to insert the data nor to
connect of the induction clamp.
This achieves a faster test during the vehicle regulating phase.

The instrument now asks the operator to make 6 accelerations to clean the system before beginning the test.

The instrument continuously checks those parameters which, being beyond the norm, could give an incorrect
reading of the values.

The following are important parameters which could create error messages:
- Zero error;
- Linearity;
- Communication errors;
- Printer.

6.1 ZERO ERROR


Resetting occurs after the warming up phase. It is either automatically activated by the instrument or selected by
the operator.
The resetting errors and relative instructions may be the following.

If this message appears, the protective slide must be cleaned as indicated in chap. EXTRAORDINARY
MAINTENANCE.
Besides the glasses cleaning, it is necessary to verify the led ignition by removing the GLASS which protect the
projector (see following drawing).
Repeat the resetting operation after cleaning.

ATTENTION!!
Some of the parts inside the EUROSMOKE become heated to 100C. For this reason, it
is always advisable to wait 10 minutes after the instrument has been switched off
before proceeding with these operations.

If the following message appears, further to the cleaning of the glasses, it is necessary to verify the led by removing
the filter GLASS to protect the projector (see the following drawing).

If there is no green light please call the

This error message indicates a non stable opacity during the zeroing, which can be caused, for instance, by the
defective led or by a possible loosening of the focal lens.

If at the end of the zeroing the following screen is displayed it is possible that the gain of the unit is too high . In this
case please contact the technical assistance

6.2 LINEARITY ERROR


Linearity enables the accuracy of the instrument to be checked, by inserting a sample filter of known value along
the optic path.
Even though the operator strictly complies with the operations indicated in chapter LINEARITY CHECK, error may
appear on the display along with the relative instructions.

The message in figure implies immediate inspection of the sample filter which should have been inserted as
indicated in chapter LINEARITY CHECK.
The reason for this error is due to insertion of a different filter from that supplied, with different opacity values.
In this case, the instrument recognises unacceptable values and generates the error message.

6.3 COMMUNICATION ERROR


During normal operation, the EUROSMOKE MODULE will be connected to the Personal Computer by means of an
RS232 serial output.
If connection becomes faulty for any reason (broken flex or defect in the electronic circuits), the following message
appear on the display.

Check the connections between the SMOKE MODULE and the Personal Computer. Contact the after-sales service
if the fault cannot be resolved.

6.4 PRINT ERROR


If the printer is unable to dialogue with the computer in the correct way, a message may appear on the screen.

The problem can be resolved by checking the printer-computer connections or by making sure that the printer is
"ON LINE".
Consult the after-sales service if the problem cannot be resolved.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
All the maintenance operations are indicated by means of alarm messages on the instrument when necessary.
The routine maintenance operations include:
- Cleaning the protective slides and the optical parts.

7.1 CLEANING THE PROTECTIVE SLIDES AND THE OPTICAL PARTS


The slides protecting the led and silicon sensor can become dirtied with smoke.
For this reason, the instrument features a system of filters which can be easily removed for cleaning.

Clean the glass with spectacle paper or any specific glass cleaning product.
Allow to dry and then fit the slide holders back in their correct positions as indicated in the
figure.

Never ever use gasoline, diesel oil or paraffin to clean the slides

The slide holders protect the optic elements (led and sensor) by acting as a perfect seal
against smoke, thanks to a rubber retention ring.
This is why is necessary to comply with the assembly position as illustrated in the
following figure.
Correct operation of the instrument could be jeopardized if the position were inverted.

If the error message ZERO ERROR remains even after the slides have been cleaned, proceed by cleaning the
other optic elements: led and sensor.
Use a normal cotton bud or piece of cotton wool to do this and clean inside the two elements by removing the slide
holders as indicated in the figure.

8.1 OBD RPM COUNTER MOD. 8290

The device mod. 8290 allows the reading of RPM and Engine Temperature directly ECU of cars approved
according to ISO85765-4 regulation. It must be connected to RPM and TEMPERATURE connectors of the smoke
meters.
