STOP & SHOP LOT CAUSES GRIEF

YOU CANT PARK THAT HERE
By Dan Guarino

Petitions, calls to elected officials, letters to the editor, talk of

boycotts and a furor over escalated towing and fees? And it all
started in a parking lot.
Recently complaints have been
rising about cars being towed out
of the parking lot at a rising rate
in front of 112-15 Beach Channel
Drive.
Stop & Shop and several other stores, including Ciros Pizza,
Liquor & Wine Warehouse, Sophie Wang Nails & Spa and Citibank share the shopping center
there and have all heard from
disgruntled shoppers. Whats
with the towing? But as owners
are quick to point out, they do
not own the lot and have no control over the towing.
One source familiar with the
sites operations explained the
stores are not calling in to have
the cars towed. Rather tow trucks
are stationed in or near the lot,

looking out for people parking

and leaving the lot.
The lot is owned by Benenson
Capital Partners, a large Manhattan-based real estate firm. But
several calls and messages over
the past two weeks to Benenson
for comment about the Rockaway Park lot produced no replies.
The Benenson website lists Stop
& Shop as one of its flagship tenants. The contact phone number
is 212-867-0990.
In the meantime store owners and managers are facing the
brunt of community outrage
over residents coming back to
find their cars gone. One noted
that even an employees car was
towed. Fees to recover a car are
$125 plus taxes and surcharges.
Vehicles can only be recovered
from the contracted towing company, B&M Towing in Arverne,
Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m.
Though private property, for
decades the large lot has served

as an unofficial parking area
for those doing business across

Texting Abroad
My grandmother left Ireland for good at 16 or 17 years
old (they were never sure
back then) and headed to
New York by boat. Soon after
passing the Statue of Liberty she hopped aboard a train
and headed to San Francisco
where shed meet her brother
and establish roots. She did it
all without texting.
It mustve been so much
easier on the parents then.
The kids would head off and
you wouldnt hear from them
again for six months. Youd
never hear about every closecall, mishap and weirdo or
what they had for lunch.
These days you can pretty
much stay in constant contact and all that does is drive

you a little insane or a lot insane. Some parents, if the kid
doesnt text or call every 20
minutes, call the FBI and put
posters on telephone poles.
My 18 year old, who will go
unnamed, headed back in the
other direction, to Ireland,
for a semester abroad just last
week. His first message, via
text, was: Im going through
customs. Broke my glasses on
the flight.
And so it began
I have to admit I thought
hed get further than Dublin
Airport with his glasses intact
but Im not that optimistic so
I packed him an extra pair.
A day later he sends another
text: you sent an empty case.
There were no glasses in it.
I wanted to fly over immediately, grab him by the
neck, and point to the glasses
I know were (and still are) in
the case or the luggage bag.
Kids like to annoy you and
really like it when theyre

But Im getting ahead of myself. Before he tells me about

various other texts:

Irish food sucks.
Toilet doesnt work, like
theres no flusher. And I gotta
flush.
Me: Theres definitely a
flusher. You just have to find
it.
Him: It was under a vent.
I resist the temptation to say
your glasses are probably in
there, too.
My roommates are a dwarf
and a hick. And I met two
people from Missouri. They
were as expected.
Great, hes gonna cause an
international incident, Im
thinking.
Somebody passed out outside my dorm room. I had to
step over him this morning.
Irish people want me to go
to a toga partyIm in a frat
now.
Me: A frat?! Who is this?
What have you done with my
son?
They just told me I was in.
They said I look more Irish
than they do.
They dont think Im American. They keep saying, do it

for the parish, lad!

I cant tell if he likes it so far.
A commuter student got
stuck on campus last night so I
let him sleep on the couch outside my room. He left a thank
you note and signed it The Tall
Effin Ginger.
I dont know what to say, so
I say nothing.
I went to a lock and key party. Girls have a lock and the
boys have a key so you get to
meet people. I got matched
up with this stunning, modelesque girl. But when she
smiled both her front teeth
were missing. Not the ones in
the back, the front.
Theres a big soccer game.
The star on the other team
everyone hates is named
Boyle. Somebody asked me
my name a minute ago and I
said, Donohue.
I have my first class tomorrow.
I told him I went online and
ordered a pair of eyeglasses that he could pick up in
Dublin. (As I wrote this my
grandmother rolled over in
her grave).

Poseidons Parade Does it Again!

By Katie McFadden

There were mermaids and mermen a plenty, pirates and sea creatures galore at the 2nd Annual Poseidons Parade. The sea-inspired
spectacle was another success
with mermaids from near and far
showing off their creative spirit as
crowds lined the entire parade route
along the boardwalk for this summer-ending celebration.
Members of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, who have participated in Coney Islands Mermaid
Parade for the past decade, were
inspired by the start-of-summer
event in Brooklyn and brought
their very own to Rockaway as
a way to close out the summer.
Poseidons Parade, held for the
first time in September 2015, is
a family-friendly art parade that
encourages creativity and artistic
expression. The inaugural event
was a bit hit and this year was
even bigger. Overall I think the
parade was a success. It was a sea
of smiles, enthusiastic spirit, and
beautiful artistry, parade founder Casey Brouder said.

A lot of time and planning goes
into the Poseidons Parade. Brouder thanks Portia Dyrenforth, Rockaways Administrator from the
Parks Department, Geoff Rawling,
Alex Cannon, Katie Honan, Carolyn Cryan, John Cori and Jerry Rea
for all of their help, just to name
a few. She also made a special
shout out to John Hedderson, who
passed away on Tuesday, September 20. He was a judge last year
and a huge inspiration to the creative community. He was not only
an extremely talented artist, he was
also a funny friend and a devoted,
loving father, Brouder said.
Poseidons Parade is expected to
be a continuous longtime tradition
and planning has already started
for 2017, with the Poseidon's Prom
fundraiser expected sometime in
the winter and next Septembers
parade. The wheels will be turning til next year, Brouder said. To
keep up to date, check out www.

Speaking of The Poseidon

Street Report

An issue has arisen regarding the street raising and final installation of new bulkheads on West 11th and 12th
Roads regarding the completion date of this project.
Presently the contractor's
work schedule for this project on both streets involves
actual street work Monday
to Friday starting at 7 a.m.

with clean up and contractor departure occurring, for

the most part, around 4:30
p.m.
It now appears that the
contractor's present work
schedule will not be sufficient to ensure completion
of the bulkhead work, street
infrastructure, raising and
finish work for the shared
space road concept on West
11th and 12th Roads by December 2016. If the present
work schedule remains as
is, the estimated completion
date for the project will be
delayed several weeks well
into calendar year 2017.
If the completion date is
delayed, it follows that Build
It Backs access to those
homes scheduled for raising
and other work will be similarly delayed. It should also
be kept in mind that a significant project completion delay into calendar year 2017
will place us into the winter
storm season which would

cause additional impact for

those traversing an already
encumbered street by foot.
An option has been offered
to amend the current work
schedule of the contractor
in order to get this project
back on track for a completion date of December 2016
which would entail extending actual work hours right
up to 6 p.m. Monday through
Friday with an additional
(sixth) work day being added
on Saturday.
I believe the additional
work hours proposed for the
regular work week (Monday
- Friday) should not prove
overly intrusive, however, the greatest impact sustained with this new work
schedule would be the addition of Saturday as the sixth
work day of the week. Bulk
shopping trips would, for
the most part, then be constrained to Saturday evening
and Sunday. The contractor
would continue to accom-

modate bulk deliveries (oil,

propane, etc.) given sufficient advance notice of such
delivery.
I have already polled many
of the residents of West 12th
Road regarding this newly proposed work schedule
and, for the most part, all
agree that the best course of
action would be to do whatever it takes to complete this
project on time. I must also
mention that there are a few
residents who feel the addition of a sixth work day on
Saturday would prove overly
intrusive for themselves and
their families.
In any event, this issue
will be discussed at the next
Broad Channel Civic Association meeting on Thursday,
September 22 at the Broad
Channel VFW at 7 p.m. and
I urge all residents of the affected blocks to attend.

Facts You Probably Dont Need

The sun makes up

99.86% of the mass of
the solar system. It's
so big that you could
squeeze 1.3 million
Earths inside of it.

There might be as many

as three sextillion stars
in the universe. That's 3
followed by 23 zeros or
300,000,000,000,000,00
0,000,000. That's more
than all the grains of
sand on Earth.

It takes 24 hours for

the Earth to rotate on
its axis to make a day,
and 365 days to orbit
around the sun for a
year. It takes around 230
million years for our
solar system to complete
a single orbit around
the Milky Way. The last
time it was in its current
position, the earliest
dinosaurs
had
just
appeared, and flowering
plants wouldn't evolve
for another 100 million
years.

Forty-seven years ago,

humankind took its

probably still be there

the moon has no

Proudly serving our community for over 25 years.

Brooklyn on Saturday, September 24 at the 35th Annual Great

Irish Fair of New York.

The Great Irish Fair is a longtime tradition but this year its
taking place at a brand new venue. For the past few years, the
festival was held in the MCU
Stadium parking lot, but it has
now found a permanent home.
Coney Island welcomed the
Ford Amphitheater (3052 W 21st
Street) this summer, a brand new
sheltered venue that has hosted
a series of concerts featuring
big name acts. Marty Cottingham, Chairman of the Board of
Directors for the Irish American
Building Society, which hosts
the Great Irish Fair, was instrumental in the building and development of the Amphitheater,
so the festival organizers decided to give credit where it is due
and make the new venue a permanent home for the festival.
The venue also eliminates the
concern of bad weather. Its a
beautiful venue with a permanent structure thats covered, so

we dont have to worry about
rain, Kevin Conlon, Director of
Operations for the GIF, said. It
was time for a change and Martys involvement with the Amphitheater is part of the reason
we decided to move there.
This year the festival events
have been packed into one full
day with a great lineup of musicians, Irish dancers, bagpipe
bands, vendors, fun for the kids
and plenty of corned beef and
Guinness. The festival opens at
10 a.m. and goes to 10 p.m. The
Clann Eireann Pipe Band will
kick off the music at noon, followed by Andy Cooney at 12:30
p.m. The Buckley School of Irish
Dance and the FDNY Emerald
Society Pipes & Drums will give
a taste of traditional Irish dance
and music at 2 p.m., followed
by Derek Warfield & the Young
Wolfe Tones at 3 p.m. OMalley
Irish Dance Academy will show
off their moves at 4:30 p.m., followed by the McLean Avenue
Band at 5 p.m., Breezy Point
Pipes & Drums at 6:30 p.m. and
Searson at 7 p.m. Closing out

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2016

the evening will be Unforgettable Fire at 8:30 p.m. The event
will also include Irish-inspired
goods from a variety of vendors,
food by Buckleys and Kennedys and bartenders from Breezy
Point and Farrells Bar will be
pouring pints of Guinness and
other libations. Kids will get to
enjoy things like a playground,
face painting and ice cream.
Each year, the festival honors various Irish New Yorkers
for their contributions to the
community. Among this years
honorees are four from the local area, including Coach John
Kelly, Rev. William F. Sweeney,
Linda Gallagher-Lomanto and
John Manning. Kelly, of Breezy
Point, is receiving the Irish Man
of the Year Award for his work
as coach of the Xavier High
School football team. Kelly was
also suddenly diagnosed with
ALS about a year ago. We felt
it was necessary to recognize
his success at Xavier while battling this illness that struck him
out of the blue, Conlon said.
Some may know Father Bill Cunningham as one of the pastors at
St. Francis de Sales, but hes re-

Page 13

ceiving the Father Mychal Judge

Memorial Award for his nearly
20 years of service at St. Francis
Prep High School. Linda Gallagher-Lomanto, a Breezy Point
resident originally from Bay
Ridge, is receiving the Round
Tower Award for her role as President of the Bay Ridge St. Patricks Day Parade, which she has
been involved with for 12 years.
This years Celtic Cross Award
goes to John Manning, of Breezy
Point, for his many years with the
Ancient Order of Hibernians, including his role as AOH Queens
County President, and for
launching the successful Rockaway/ Breezy Point Irish Festival.
The other honorees include Brian Ruane, Katie Byrnes, Caitlin
Bowen, Sister Tesa Fitzgerald,
Marguerite Peck, Kevin Peter
Carroll, Danny Prince, Raymond
Teatum and Paul Moses.
Tickets for the event are $20
and can be purchased in advance locally at the Breezy Point
Liquor Store or Jamesons Pub in
Rockaway, or online on Ticketmaster.com, or at the gate on the
day of the event. Children 14 and
under are free.

Conlon says the Great Irish

Fair continues each year as a way
to bring the Irish communities
of New York together. The Irish
community is very close-knit and
this is a way to bring those from
Bay Ridge, Rockaway, the Bronx
and parts of Queens together for
a day of Irish music, culture and
libations. Its like a big family
reunion after the summer. The
festival is also held for charitable
reasons. One-hundred percent
of the net proceeds goes towards
Futures in Education, a charity
that provides scholarships for a
Catholic education to kids who
dont have the means to afford it.
Saturday is expected to be a
beautiful day for the fair. Come
down this weekend, Conlon
said. If you havent seen the
Amphitheater yet, you really
should. Its awesome to have
this venue down in Brooklyn.
We have a great slate of honorees
and were happy to celebrate
them on the fair grounds, we
have a great lineup of performers and why not spend this first
weekend of fall sharing a pint of
Guinness and a few laughs while
listening to great Irish music?

Banks Should Do Better

Dear Editor:
Love the best-planned little
park, our own respite, Tribute
Park. It's always well-tended,
thanks to Parks staff and volunteers, and affords us pleasant solace.
The state of the property of
the HSBC on 116th and Beach
Channel Drive was mentioned
in High Tide. I have an opinion
about that.
Bankers make terrible property owners. For reference, see
the foreclosed crumbling homes
throughout Rockaway and across
the nation. They are the banks'
responsibilities. They take care
of our dollars; how about tending
to our broken dreams? Pay for
and appoint a property manager
to do this, if necessary.
In a country where homelessness is a major problem,
we should legislate for use
of houses left abandoned for
years on end. Leaving these
dwellings to rot is a national
disgrace. Shape up or put up,
Money Managers!

Old Days Yearn

Dear Editor:
The Rockaways had a beautiful summer with many beachgoers, people enjoying the
boardwalk and concessions.
And free concerts, and street
festivals. The one problem was
a lot of public urination by vagrants, and people consuming
alcohol in public and drunkeness. Panhandling on 116th
street was ever-present every
day .Why is there such a disregard for taxpaying citizens by
this current administration??
Quality of life issues no longer
go to the courthouse. It is just a
summons, that more than likely will not be paid.
Thank you Mayor de Blasio

Stacey Gets A Vote

Dear Editor:
I have never felt the need to
write a letter to any newspaper previously. However, due
to recent disparaging comments and non-truths spouted
by Alan Zwirn in his political
campaign for Assemblyman,
I could not sit idly by and am
compelled to speak out.
I wish to clarify that both
Alan Zwirn and Stacey Pheffer
Amato followed the same process to candidacy. They both
threw their name into the ring,
they both were the singular
candidate for their respective
parties and received their endorsements. Finally, both of
them collected the necessary
petitions to get on the ballot.
To come right out and not even
insinuate, but to blatantly accuse his opponent of wrongdoing is both supercilious and
extremely unprofessional.
There have been snide comments on Mr. Zwirn's part that

Stacey's only accomplishment is being the daughter of
Audrey Pheffer. In fact, Stacey
has been active for years in The
Rockaway Beach Civic Association, The Rockaway West N.Y.
Rising Committee, as well as
being a Democratic District
leader. It appears that the majority of the experience of active involvement Stacey brings
to the table are exclusively in
the area she wishes to represent. As an active volunteer
myself in my hometown, I can
assure you that I see Stacey at
District 27 Community Education Council meetings.
I have had the opportunity to
work with Stacey through our
volunteer efforts on The Parent Association of The Scholars' Academy over the past five
years. Stacey was at the helm of
our Parent Association when our
school was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. She fought tirelessly
to provide any sense of normalcy for our teachers, students and
their families. As any Rockaway
resident will attest, a true reflec-

never more obvious than their
actions after the storm. Stacey
never falters. She sees needs,
comes up with solutions, and
acts to implement ideas before
those needs can become problems. To state that she rides on
the coattails of her mother only
serves to deliberately misinform
people and cloud the true issues
in our local election.
I implore Alan Zwirn to run
a clean campaign and to let his
own actions and experience hold
weight over the false accusations
he perpetuates. Mudslinging
does not garner either respect or

Ask the
DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Diabetes Check
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that
all diabetics perform self-monitoring of their blood glucose levels. Self-monitoring promotes
personal responsibility and
provides an opportunity for better diabetic control. It has been
shown that diabetics who monitor their own glucose levels have
lower hemoglobin A1c levels (a
lab test used to evaluate diabetic
control) and have lower rates of
diabetic complications such as
eye and kidney disease. Diabetic patients often ask how often
they should check their glucose
level. The answer usually is it
depends.
All Type I diabetics and Type II
diabetics on insulin should reg-

ularly check their blood sugar.

For these people the ADA recommends checking it at least
before meals and snacks, occasionally after meals, at bedtime,
before exercise, whenever they
suspect their level might be low,
after treating a low level until
the level is normal and before
critical tasks like driving. Some
oral medications used to treat
Type II diabetes can cause low
blood sugar and diabetics on
these medications should also
check their levels often. These
medications are sulfonylureas
(glipizide, glimepiride and glyburide) and meglitinide (Prandin).
The ADA recommends the
following glucose goals for

non-pregnant diabetics: fasting and pre-meal 80 130;

two hours after a meal less
than 180; bedtime 100 150.
Of course everyone is different and these levels are only a
guideline. For example geriatric patients prone to hypoglycemia (low glucose) may
be more harmed than benefitted by intensive treatment
thus their goal levels should
be higher. Results should not
be viewed as good or bad
but rather should be used as a
tool to identify opportunities
for changes in treatment. That
is why keeping a log of levels is
important.
Deciding which monitor and
strips to use is often guided by
financial factors. Some insurance plans only cover certain
meters and strips. Basic meters are cheap, often about $15,
which is why the manufacturers
will send free meters to doctors
to give to their patients. They
make their money from the sale
of the strips, which can range
from $0.18 to almost $2 each
without coverage. Some meters are more complex and can

The Rockaway Times

calculate insulin dosages based
on diet and other information
uploaded by the patient. Some
meters can also transmit results
to smartphones using apps like
Accu-chek Connect Mobile
app. All meters should be periodically checked for accuracy
using a control solution.
A common complaint about
checking glucose levels is that
it hurts. Here are some recommendations to reduce pain: use
a new lancet every time, choose
a lancet device with a depth
gauge and choose the lowest setting that will draw blood, choose
smaller gauge lancets (28 to 33
gauge with the higher number
being thinner) and poke the side
of the finger rather than the middle (there are fewer nerve endings on the side of our fingers).
If you are diabetic and are not
checking your levels talk to your
doctor about getting started.
For more information go to the
ADA website. For more information on meters try www.diabetesforecast.org

RAAs Big Splash!

By Dan Guarino

With a splash of color and

a dash of excitement and
sound, the Rockaway Artists
Alliance launched its latest
exhibition on Sunday, September 18.
ARTSplash 2016, the 16th
annual incarnation of the
multimedia exhibition which
has been one of RAAs biggest
events of the year, will be on
view through October 16 at
the T-7 Gallery at Fort Tilden.
The wide range of works reflects everything from painting to assemblage sculpture,
glass work, textile arts, water
color, photography and more.
ARTSplashisRAAsannualsalon style show, RAA Exhibitions
co-chairperson Tracey Green
said. We had a fantastic opening on Sunday. But there are
plenty of chances to see the show
during our gallery hours Saturdays and Sundays from 12
p.m. to 4 p.m. through October.
It features the work of 38
artists in several mediums.

RAAs ARTSplash exhibition opening at the T-7 Gallery.

(Photos by Dan Guarino)

One piece I find incredibly

unique to the show is a sculpture of a headdress made out
of plush stuffed animals by
artist Lauren Genutis.
The one hundred or so people who came to the opening
reacted very positively to the

exhibition, with many commenting that the quality of

the works gets better each
year.
A number of the artists
were on hand for the opening
reception. A mix of veteran
exhibitors and those showing

with RAA for the first time, got

to meet and greet gallery-goers and talk about their work.
Among the newer artists
was photographer Robert
Mintzes. Showing for the first
time in ARTSplash, his piece
Distance won Best in Photography. Mintzes and his
wife, Jessica, had visited the
gallery earlier. However he
was not on hand to accept the
award. Turns out both Mintztes were playing starring
roles in the Rockaway Theatre Companys production
of Wait Until Dark right
across the parking lot from
the gallery.
Also attending was longtime RAA member and artist
Martha Killian, who is credited with originally coming
up with ARTSplash as the
name for the show.
Charles Markis of the National Park Service paid us
the honor of judging ARTSplash this year, Green said.

ramp debacle. The contractor
finally got to work earlier this
week to connect the ramp to
the sidewalk.
When asked about the project,
a spokesperson for the Parks
Department said, The concrete
flatwork will connect to the
sidewalk on either side of Beach
126th Street. There will also be a
curb cut in the center of the plaza making a seamless connection to the street for emergency
and park vehicles to access the
boardwalk and beach.

When contractor Skanska

finished the boardwalk in July,
they seemed to neglect an important end piece. All summer,
the ramp of the boardwalk end
at Beach 126th street was incomplete, with the ramp ending in sand instead of making a
connection to concrete. Many,
especially bikers, found themselves abruptly getting caught
in the sand as they came off the
boardwalk, making for a dangerous stop. Some avoided the
entrance completely by utilizing the ramps on Beach 125th
Street. Just as the summer has

COMMUTER TALES
MOUSE IN THE HOUSE

By Mary Tufts

My boss is an animal lover.

Not a dog or cat person, but a
real animal lover. No cheeseburger has ever crossed Lucys lips. Normally, this is
not much of a work issue. Til
one day we had a mouse running around the office. The
exterminator was called, and
Lucy was distraught.
As the fateful hour approached, she persuaded
me to help her catch the
mouse. It was a matter of life
and death! Needing a break,
I agreed. I held a paper
bag strategically while she
chased the mouse into it. Im
surprised the tiny creature
didnt die of a heart attack,
but he seemed quite lively in
the bag.
Thinking that midtown
Manhattan wasnt the best
place for a mouse, Lucy con-

sidered alternatives. We had

a meeting in White Plains
later in the day, and that
seemed to suggest some possibilities. We left the office
with Mr. Mouse in his paper
bag, secured with a string.
The ride on the 6 train
to Grand Central was uneventful.
A few strange
looks, but this is NYC. Most
people ignored us, and the
tiny sounds coming from
our wiggling bag.
Waiting at Grand Central,
Lucy thought about the options. A Brooklyn girl, she
didnt know White Plains.
But it had to be better than
23rd Street for a mouse, no?
There had to be trees and
grass, right? I had some
doubts, but kept them to
myself. The train came and
we boarded. Lucy fell asleep
and I settled in to read.
Suddenly, I was inter-

rupted by screaming and

a woman across the aisle
jumping up on her seat. A
quick glance told me that
Mr. Mouse had eaten his
way out of his paper sack,
and was now running down
the aisle of the train, being greeted by screams
and laughter. One man was
trying to feed him potato
chips, while another was
pursuing him with a rolled
newspaper.
As the mouse made his way
down the car, the screams
and laughter followed. One
woman was so upset she
leaped up on the seats and
in her frantic need to hold
onto something, pulled the
emergency cord. The conductor came running. His
relief that the shrieking
did not mean someone had
been murdered on his train
quickly evaporated.

Meanwhile, Lucy, fearing

for the mouses safety, had
begun to chase him through
the train. She had dumped
the contents of her purse on
the seat and hoped to use
the bag to secure him. The
conductor intervened, corralling her in the vestibule
and demanding to know
what was going on. She explained, and he threatened
to have her arrested, or, at
the very least, throw her
f*&%$^# a%$ off this train.
The train suddenly came
to an abrupt, unscheduled stop in Bronxville. Mr.
Mouse was last seen running off down the platform.
It was a long cab ride to
White Plains.
(Mary Tufts sends us occasional Commuter Tales
which might otherwise be
just another day in the life
of many commuters.)

months the staff saw that

The Spoken Word

there was a slow and steady
progress within the hospital. The paint that seemed
to always peel off the walls
stayed painted making the
place more palatable. After
a few months patients who
had to be shackled were allowed to walk freely, and
others who were heavily
medicated were slowly coming off their medications.
Some had made enough improvement that they were
released. The patients became well enough to be allowed access outdoors where
the gardens were now being
cared for and sometimes
played games with the staff.
There was less absenteeism
among staff and the turnover was less, and they now
had more staff than needed.
The amazing part of the story
is that the doctor said that as
he took responsibility to heal
the broken parts of himself,
he also healed the patients
who felt his prayers on some
level. It took loving spoken
words to heal; his prayers
were somehow heard and
felt from a closed office door
within a dark, dreary place.
He transformed darkness
and brought light to others
by prayer. In short a miracle.
There is a saying that has
been traced back to the
Quakers, who were pacifists. Called the three gates
of speech, it goes like this:
Before you speak, let your
words pass through three
gates. At the first gate, ask
yourself : Is it true? At the
second gate ask : Is it necessary? At the third gate
ask : Is it kind?
If we try to follow this
simple instruction with our
spoken words, we may become a vessel of abundant
blessings for others and
ourselves and bring light to
darkness.

Peninsula Hospital Being Demolished

By Dan Guarino

The sounds of jackhammers

and heavy equipment are not a
sign of renovation or new construction at 51-15 Beach Channel Drive. Instead behind the
green plywood barricades that
surround it Peninsula Hospital
Center is being torn down.
The 173-bed Rockaway healthcare complex opened in 1908
as Peninsula General Hospital. Despite heavy community
protests it closed in 2012, leaving St. Johns Episcopal in Far
Rockaway as the peninsulas
sole hospital facility.
Back then the New York
Times reported that the troubled Peninsula Hospital Center
closed, unable to stay solvent
after its lab failed a state exam
and was shut down by the New
York State Health Department,
which said the lab was dangerous for patients. The NYSHD
decision is still a source of controversy today.
As the formerly derelict
building comes down plans

for the property's future use

are going up.
In May, New York real estate magazine The Read Deal
reported that the Arker Companies and their partner the
Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation bought the site, with
760,000 buildable square
feet, and an adjacent lot for
$19 million.

According to Katie Honan at DNAinfo, city records

show that the property was
sold by Congregation Zichron
Yitzchok Vmoshe Eliyahu, a
non-profit based in Borough
Park and owned by Yosef "Joseph" Brunner. They in turn
originally bought it at a bankruptcy sale conducted after
the hospital closed in 2012.
Last year the Arker Compa-

nies started construction on

an affordable housing site for
low-income seniors in Bayswater.
As for the now soon to be
gone Peninsula Hospital,
Honan noted the new owners plan to build multi-family housing and commercial
buildings, according to paperwork filed with the city.
As demolition goes on, the
Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center next door
remains open and operational. Contrary to concerns at the
time, it did not close when the
hospital did and has remained
in business since. Internal
renovations are now underway to offer additional outpatient-type services at PNRC.
In the meantime the sounds
of Peninsula Hospital Center
coming down can be heard for
blocks around. The disappearance of this Rockaway institution, along with memories of
the community service it provided, can be felt all across the
peninsula.

Clear Coats
By Artie Wallace

I mention in a lot of my articles about applying a clear

coat. This week Im going to explain a little more about clear
coats.
In most cases I recommend
MinWax products. The reason
I recommend them is that its
very easy to work with. It may
not give you a professional finish, but it will look good when
its done, and if you follow the
instructions on the can, its almost foolproof.
There are too many other
ways to clear coat things to list
in this article, so I will list a few
of the main ones.

Shellac: Can be layered for

thicker coats. But if not applied
right can leave brush marks, also
shellac is prone to get marks from
hot items like hot coffee cups, hot
bowls, etc. Shellac has a tendency
to have an amber tint to it when it
dries, so its not totally clear.
Polyurethane: This leaves more
of a thin plastic coat on your
item. It comes in finishes from
Satin to Glossy. Water based Polyurethane dries fast and remains
clear when dry, the finish wont
hold up well with heat (like with
shellac). The oil-based polyurethane takes much longer to dry
and adds a slight amber color,
but holds up better to heat.
Varnish: Varnish is normally

used mostly for top coating, and

is much more durable than shellac or polyurethane. Varnish also
provides some protection from
ultraviolet light. Varnish is fairly
easy to apply, and will dry pretty
clear. But its not for all uses.
Lacquer: Lacquer will give
you a deep gloss finish and is
very resistant to damage. The
drawback is that over time
lacquer can begin to discolor.
Though youll see lacquer in
stores that say you can apply
them with a brush, lacquer is

really supposed to be applied

with a low pressure sprayer,
which requires more ventilation as well as equipment for a
proper coat.
As I said above, these are only
a few of the clear coats available. There are many more, but
these are the most common for
the general DIYer.
If there is a project you would
like to see in The DIYer, email
me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.

Fun Bugs
By Lou Pastina

Remember lighting bugs?

Sometimes they were called
June bugs. As kids we would
catch them and put them in
bottles. They were so cool to
look at. And when that time of
year came around the backyards would be filled with lighting bugs. Where did they go? I
havent seen them in years. Do
you have to believe in Tinkerbelle to see them? Or did Sandy
do them all in?
How about Monarch butterflies? Where have they gone?

Used to be that in September

the sky would be filled with
those floating beauties making
their way to South America on
a several thousand-mile journey to their homes. Stopping
off in Rockaway to say hello by
just floating around in our back
yards. I see some occasionally,
but they look more lost than a
familiar visitor.
Our friends the cicadas are
back in full force though. No
amount of salt water into their
dirt homes affected their seventeen-year sleep. Up and out
in late August, those guys are

flapping their wings furiously in

search of a good-looking female
cicada. Hmmm, is that an oxymoron?
Ill tell you what, there are
plenty of dragonflies! I know
they love the sewer plant and
are always around there. But
what is the deal about Rippers
at Beach 86th Street? Have
you ridden your bike by the
bathroom there? The place
is like dragonfly central; they
are everywhere. But God bless
the dragonfly, for they may
look ferocious but they seldom attack.
I was recently upstate at a
lake and saw dining needles.
Remember those guys? The
skinny version of dragonflies,
they come in various colors,
but mostly are blue. I saw red
ones this year too; never saw
that before. I guess they really
like lakes, because you never
see them in Rockaway. Maybe
they cant afford the tolls on
the bridges?
Earlier this year I saw a
caterpillar in the backyard.
Not just any type either, this
one was big, yellow, green

Page 35
and black. Remember those?
As kids you would see them
everywhere, now never!
What happened? Were those
the guys that turned into gypsy moths and the city eradicated them? Which brings
me to a thought, why are all
the bugs changing so much?
Is it that we have cemented
everything? I dont think so.
Is it that we are using insecticides to kill them all? I dont
think so; so much of the stuff we
eat now is organic. Is it global
warming? You would think bugs
would like that!
Maybe it is the Tinkerbelle
effect. Maybe we grew up and
dont believe anymore, and
we just dont see them. Maybe they are there, and we need
a more child-like view of the
world. I am going with that explanation for now. And I am
going to try and believe more,
who knows I might see a lighting bug!
(Editors note: Weve gotten
birds, trees, and bugs in the last
three Lazer columns. We breathlessly await 500 words on rocks.)

Life With Our

Artistic Child
By Kami-Leigh Agard

Awareness Cards

PRESENTINGAUTISM AWARENESS CARDS

These cards have become a
popular way of handling bystanders for parents of children with autism. They often
state a few brief facts about autism, explain why meltdowns
happen and refer the reader to
a website where they can learn
more.
When our artistic child is
having a meltdown or displays
socially unacceptable behavior, will gifting this card be
beneficial in educating folks
unaware about autism? Will
it foster understanding, patience and tolerance? Or does
it come across as trying to illicit pity, while revealing our
childs disability to strangers?
I have quandaries about this.
I am afraid of how folks would
use it to brand her and block
themselves from appreciating her enchantingly beautiful abilities. All they would
see is a child with a problem.
Then there is the concern of
safety. Suppose my daughter
is targeted because of her autism? Think of recent incidents
where autistic children were
abducted.
However on the flip side (no
pun intended), perhaps if I
had one of these cards in my
arsenal, it could have eased
the tension described in the
incident below?
September 8, I leaped out of
bed. First day of school!
Ecstatic that my daughter
would be carted off for a few
hours of the day in which I
could finally get some peace
and quiet, and EXHALE! As
most parents with artistic or

normal children would attest, after a stressful, crazy and

hectic summer, this is the day
of jubilee!
However, mummy paranoia and anxiety then kicked
in soon after. For the new
school year, I got my daughter
transferred to a local school.
Her commute would be twenty
minutes each way, as opposed
to the ninety minutes she had
for the last three years. A flood
of questions went through
my head as I was getting her
dressed. Would she like the
new school? What will her
teacher, therapists and paras
be like? What were the behaviors and needs of the other
children? Will they warm up
her food to the volcanic temperature she likes? What was
I sacrificing, just to limit her
commuting time and increase
my peace of mind?
The bus was scheduled to
arrive at seven. By eight, no
bus. Like any child, she started getting agitated, repeatedly stripping off her clothes,
jumping on the bed, and galloping all over the house like
the underdog horse in the
Belmont Stakes! It was not her
fault, but I was losing patience.
Eight-thirty and still no bus.
She was late. Feeling that I was
about to have a stroke, I got her
dressed for the fifty-millionth
time, and decided to take her
myself. Besides, she loves riding on the MTA buses.
In the packed bus, a woman
offered her seat to my daughter, who immediately catapulted onto it, facing the window.

Then disaster struck. Another

woman in the adjacent seat
barked: Cant you make your
child sit properly? I dont
want my work clothes to get
dirty. Make her behave! That
oh so tender moment, when
someone demands, Make
your daughter behave! After
a stressful morning, I was at
the breaking point. I snapped
back: This is the way she sits!

Page 39
Trust me lady, this is not the
time or the place! Some bystanders started quietly snickering, while others gave me a
sympathetic look. I started to
feel guilty. I was wrong. Its not
the womans fault. She does
not understand. Maybe, she
also had a rough morning.
As we exited the bus, I turned
to the woman and said, My
apologies. Hope your day improves.
Would gifting an autism
awareness card have eased the
tension between the woman
and me? I dont talk about autism for sympathy or pity. My
desire is to open doors into the
reality of our lives as caregivers, and build understanding,
tolerance and growth of our
artistic children.
Please do share your
thoughts and stories by emailing me at ourartisticchild@
outlook.com. I would love
your feedback!
Also please reach out if you
are interested in attending
the Rockaway Beach Artistic"
Families support group.

A call to the towing company
got a prompt return call from a
gentleman who identified himself as B&Ms manager, but declined to give a name.
Various groups and people
trying to say were illegal, he
said. I dont know what theyre
trying to do. Stop towing. They
said theyve been parking there
for 20 years. Theyve been using that as their extra parking
space. You know, if they have a
driveway and the need a space
for their second car, theyve
been using it like that.
When asked about complaints from upset residents,
he said No has complained to
us directly. Its been indirect.

Several residents offered
their opinion that the company is known for aggressively

large scale summer exhibition. He admitted that making his choices amongst so
many outstanding works was
a tough assignment.
One selection he did not have
to make was the annual People's Choice, which gallery visitors get to cast their votes for
at the opening. A visibly overjoyed Gina Osse, who attended
with her family, stepped up to
carting away cars. When they
had the contract for Sleepys
on Beach 116th they would sit
across the street in the driveway of the Wharf and grab a car
in ten seconds as soon as they
saw the person walk to 116th,
one man said.
Others took a different view
on the parking situation. Who
owns the parking lot? one man
said. If they are paying taxes
on the large piece of land, they
can and should choose not to
make it public.
Another woman added,
The other lot (off Beach 116th
Street) has meters. So people
come down to the beach or
park in Stop & Shop all weekend or get on the train. People take advantage of the free
parking lot. So really it should
only be for the businesses.
On the other hand one
woman noted, We park there
to go to yoga, after which we
grocery shop, get nails done,
etc. Now, I guess not. Street
parking or biking to yoga
equals no errands done at
those businesses. Too bad for
them. They lose out.

The art celebration also
spread to RAAs T-6 Gallery
where artist Frank Traynor
hosted a bon voyage to summer hot dog roast on the
closing day of his Infinity
Pool installation exhibition.
It also spread to the shore as
NPS and RAA hosted the Kinesis Project dance troupe
which brought audiences out
for two performances of their
work Secrets and Seawalls
at the Fort Tilden beach.

The acoustic duo White

Merlot and also John Simonelli provided us with a wonderful performances at our
opening, Green noted.
Coming up, Green said,
Brendan Patrick, a young
artist featured in ARTSplash,
will be doing a live painting
during our gallery hours
on October 2. Brendan is a
blind painter. We invite people from the community to
come and see Brendan and
talk to him about his techniques.
Even as ARTSplash launches, RAA is looking forward to

Stacey Pheffer Amato Wants

CAMERAS AT GATEWAY
Candidate for New York State
Assembly Stacey Pheffer Amato
is asking the National Park Service for security cameras in the
Gateway National Recreation
Area. Pheffer Amato's request
comes just a week after new
footage emerged of Howard
Beach jogger Karina Vetrano's
final moments before her August 2nd murder in the Spring
Creek section of the park.
"Security cameras are an essential law enforcement tool
that help to deter illegal activity
and aid local law enforcement
in criminal investigations. It
is unthinkable that in this day
and age, in an urban park like
Gateway, we don't have cameras and other infrastructure
to keep an eye on the area and
aid visitors in distress," Stacey
Pheffer Amato said. "I urge the
National Park Service to recognize the unique needs of our
urban parkland and install the
infrastructure that will keep
our families safe."

In a letter to Department
of the Interior Secretary
Sally Jewell, Pheffer Amato
called on the federal agency to install permanent security cameras and blue
light emergency call boxes
throughout Gateway which
stretches over some 26,000
acres including sections in
New York City and New Jersey. Pheffer Amato characterized current safety infrastructure within the Jamaica
Bay Unit of the park as "inadequate," given its urban
location and record crowds.
"It's time the National
Park Service recognizes that
Gateway is an urban park,
with very different security
needs than the Grand Canyon or Yosemite. Gateway
is right in the middle of the
largest city in the country,
and having cameras and
blue boxes here is simply
a no-brainer," concluded
Pheffer Amato.
